New American Idol thread

I agree that what Simon said last night was inappropriate. That is the kind of comment, and a general one about all contestants, that Ryan is supposed to say, not one of the judges.

I’m hoping for Kris and Adam in the final. They are so different but both are so musically talented. I love Kris in the soft, acoustic, kind of bland, Jason Mraz way and I love Adam in the amazing performer and super amazing vocalist way. Having watched him perform so many different types of songs, and even more online, I have no doubt in my mind that he is, by far, the most versatile singer in this year’s competition. His performance skills have been unrivalled this year, and his command of the stage is something to behold. Viewing his performance at his high school graduation shows that he had that special “it” even at age 18. I don’t particularly care for some of the hard rock he’s done but that’s because it doesn’t showcase his enormous vocal abilities to their fullest. If his first cd included all of his studio performances on Idol, his h/s performance, the Brigadoon number from youtube, his national anthem, and As Long as You’re Mine from Wicked, I’d buy copies for everyone I know! I also look forward to Kris’ cd. As for Danny, I’m not a fan but I hope that someone actually suggests that he get some training because he’s going to blow out his chords before much longer.

HIndoo, the problem is that Adam could have a successful theater career and still not be successful monetarily. Landing the backup role in the LA production of Wicked is considered a success by many but few Broadway stars meet with financial success unless they cross over into something more lucrative. Based on the mass appeal of AI, I think Adam will be offered more roles on Broadway, but he is obviously very creative so unless he is involved in more ways than just being a performer, I doubt he will be satisfied.

Edited to add - agree with alwaysamom - I thought Danny sounded in a precarious place vocally last night - he has to resort to rasp or nasal more and more to get the sound out - those are not good things.

Someone in EW said that Adam could have a pop career in the same kind of vein as “Pink.” I guess I could see that. Though I like to hear her on the radio (over and over and over), I don’t buy her stuff.

I keep semi quoting Adam’s EW article. Instead of me butchering it here’s the real deal…All 4 pages of it!

[Adam Lambert: Shaking up ‘Idol’ | American Idol | 1 | Cover Story: American Idol | TV | American Idol | Entertainment Weekly](http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20007164_20171835_20277643,00.html)

Thanks for the link, Melsmom.

On issue of what Adam will/wants to do after AI–in his San Diego Radio interview, he said he wants to do it all. And he can!

I liked all of the performances last night, especially the boys’ own choices. I watched it twice…my H picked up D from college yesterday, and they arrived just as the show was ending, so we replayed it from the DVR (while re-re-redialing Adam’s number). Second time through, I think Adam was even better in being superior entertainment. That accompanying vocalist was annoying both times, though!

OK, so I didn’t get past the headline – “Is he gay?” LMAO. Apparently headline writer has not seen the pics online!

Ok, back to article …

OK, finished the article. Does anyone really believe Adam isn’t gay? I haven’t noticed any of the “Marry Me, Adam” signs the story talks about, but if I did I’d assume they’re tongue-in-cheek.

I had to google the italicized word to try and understand what the author was saying. Have to say I didn’t interpret Adam’s rendition of ‘I can’t get no Satisfaction’ quite the same way as the author and would never have described it that way!!! Well I probably would avoid describing most anything that way. Makes me think of warnings on certain commercials that I wish I could also avoid.

Been thinking this for weeks — Adam “might” be gay? It “might” be kinda fun to see if he could be swayed? ;)

Actually teenage and pre-teen girls love the ambiguous sexuality of a “not fully out of the closet gay” guy. I see it at my kids high school. So , yeah they are crushing on Adam. And why not. He is handsome and talented. They wouldn’t get to marry him whether he is straight or not.
As for buying cds, I admit, I am not in the record buying demographic, and I would guess most of those posting on this board are not either. I agree with Randy on this point, Adam is the most “current.” While he can move us with ballads, it is pretty clear that he wants to rock in a loud and vocal olympics way. I agree with some prior posts on Adam and musical theater: no money and stifled creativity. He likes to be original and when you step into a role in a musical, there is no room for improv.
Adam’s talent trumps the other two. Whether he is your cup of tea is another matter. I like him and hope he wins.

You are so good, swimscatmom. You got me to look it up and the origins. I like that there is a god of livestock AND male genitalia.

Does anyone besides me see the similarities both in physical looks and “shaking up” the status quo between Adam & Elvis Presley? I noticed it during auditions even, & think it’s kind of stiking.

Melsmom, I agree there are striking similarities. The “smirk” Adam sometimes wears while singing makes him almost a spittin’ image. Last night I asked both my husband and D whom he reminded them of. Surprisingly, D said “Elvis” first (she had not been watching during school so last night was her first view of Adam in action.) My husband caught on quickly after that. I’m surprised more hasn’t been made of this, but maybe it’s a generational thing. I’ve read lots of comparisons to Freddie Mercury and others, who hit the charts long after I stopped avidly following rock/popular music in the 70’s, so I can’t identify with those allusions.

I thought Danny was kind of boring.

But I think that’s the problem many of us have with Adam. We see someone who’s really talented but not original, like he’s TRYING to channel Elvis or Freddie Mercury.

Or maybe it’s just me. :)

Kris took me by surprise last night. While I love to watch Adam pull out all the stops, I don’t feel he was at his best last night. Not much of a fan of Danny’s, can’t quite explain it, although last night I heard a little Michael McDonald out of him.

Danny Gokey as played by Robert Downey Jr.? I guess everybody has a twin somewhere!

We all keep saying Kris sounds like (fill in the blank recording star) or Danny sounds like (fill in the blank recording star). Adam sounds like Adam Lambert. Right there is the talent difference. There will be no mistaking an Adam Lambert song.

Good point, I wonder whom America will choose?!

Youdon’tsay, I see Adam as having influences from Mercury, Bowie, Tyler & lots of others, but he is not a copy. If you listen to his pre Idol stuff, the originality is there. I think it’s hard to be original on Idol, cause people tend to want to take you down if you go too far.

As for Elvis, the boy can’t help his facial structure.

And I agree with ShesOnHerWay, there is no mistaking Adam’s voice. It is unique & memorable, and you can pick it out in a crowd. I hope he makes it through tonight, he’s worked hard and deserves to be in the final.
