Wow, he missed the birth of his child and then his Dad blows his big chance for him by leaking good news. Poor guy.
He does have a really good voice. What a shame.

Bumping up, though I know many people are focussed on the Olympics right now …
(I still wish they would suspend all other tv when the Olympics are on! I’ll be catching up on DVR for awhile!)

Anyone watch the girls last night? After one night, I give a thumbs up to Didi, Michelle, Crystal and Katie (the last girl). I thought Crystal seemed the most natural on stage and had the best vocals (and loved the harmonica!) last night -course, I am a bit biased cause she’s our hometown girl!

Curious for the guys tonight!

I liked Didi, Lily, Sioban, and Crystal the most. I do agree with the judges though that Crystal is probably going to have to lose the harmonica and maybe the guitar eventually (at times) in order to not be pegged as a coffeehouse performer and to open up and use the stage more to “reach” people. She is by far my favorite so I hope she makes the transition well. I love her voice and her personality.

I started off switching between Idol and the Olympics. Was it just me or did the first few singers seemed really flat? I ended up giving up on Idol and sticking with the Olympics.

A lot of them were flat. I felt the worst for Katie Stevens, the last singer, because I reallly like her and think she’s got great talent. It almost seemed that she couldn’t hear herself sing. I hope she gets to continue on next week.

Agreed that while Katie is a very good singer, I didn’t love her voice or song last night. Agree with the judges - be 17, not 30!

I do worry about Crystal because I think what you see is exactly what she is and I’m not sure that she will be willing to “loosen up” or change that - but that will be her choice to conform or not conform for the sake of the contest.

Didi and Crystal fan here, too. And I like Ashley, though they excoriated her.

I liked Haeley’s version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” It was full of enthusiasm and joy and was no more off key than any of the others who did cookie cutter performances. That woman who butchered “Landslide” should have been yanked off the stage a la “The Gong Show.” When Billy Corgan sings a song better than you, you should stop singing!

I’m a Didi and Crystal fan too. I love that Indi music sound, and I LOVE Ingrid Michaelson.

Not everyone has to wail loudly and do musical gymnastics to be a good singer (Simon, I’m talking to you.;))

Ditto to “The Gong Show” reference, where was the hook when they needed it last night!

I really liked Lilly and liked Didi and Crystal. I don’t like Haeley at all but her performance was definitely appealing to her fan base. I wanted Jannell and Lacey to do much better than they did; they were my two early female favorites and I’d like them to get another chance.

Well, we could easily eliminate 7 of the guys. How many did they audition to get this group? I know for some it was nerves, I really felt bad for a couple of them, but it was pretty amateurish tonight.

On ANOTHER note - As someone who has worked to establish herself professionally and has gently chided males for sexist remarks or behaving in a way that bordered on sexual harassment, I am really annoyed with the whole Kara and the guy with the shirt thing. While she may think it was all in good fun, it is the epitome of sexual harassment. When she asked him to take off his shirt, she was in the position of ultimate power, he really could not refuse. To continue to draw attention to this is just wrong. If we expect males to treat us with respect, we must confront females who behave in a way that we would consider unacceptable if the situation were reversed.

There were only four guys that I would want to hear again. Awful night.

I also think that with a few notable exceptions, the guys really did fall flat (or sharp, in some painful incidents) tonight. I liked Lee, surprisingly, and Casey and Andrew, unsurprisingly, but the others seemed to let their nerves/desire get in the way of their music. I felt quite bad for a few of them…Tim Urban has no chance, and in my opinion there were plenty of guys they could’ve brought back who were better, but he was almost in tears after hearing the same negative critique 4 times, and I just felt sorry for him.

I’m also sick of the Kara/Casey thing. He seems to be taking it in stride and using it to his advantage in a way (i.e. joking about dedicating his performance tonight to her), but it’s a) weird, and b) annoying by now. I’ve never much liked Kara, though her comments seem a bit less ridiculous this year, but this is just annoying and tacky. I don’t see how she can attack Tyler for having a gimmick when that’s all she seems to be running on herself.

Sorry, Kara rant over. For now.

^I agree about Kara. It’s fine to joke around, but she crossed the line and came off as very unprofessional. She needs to make an on-air apology to that particular male contestant.

Actually, I was disappointed with both the women and the men this week. I hope they step it up next week.

Agreed about Kara and the shirt.

Agreed, mostly a bust tonight.

Agreed, my favs at this point for guys = Lee and Casey.

So many of the performances tonight were painful.

I adored Alex Lambert’s voice, but I have to agree with Ellen’s characterization of him as a slightly unripe banana. I wish they had let him go in Hollywood, because he does need more seasoning as a performer, and now that he’s in the Top 24, he can’t ever try out again.

I thought Mike (?) DeWyze had a great tone, but every other note was off key. (I have a pretty sensitive ear to “pitchiness”, which can make this show pure torture at times.) But Simon loved him, knowing that with the magic of pitch correction in the recording studio, singing on key is no longer a prerequisite to a sucessful career (see Swift, Taylor). Sigh.

overall VERY blah night. I am still sorry they let Thaddeus go.

I liked John Park tonight. At least once he got the lounge singer out of his voice.

Kara should be embarrassed by her behavior. It’s embarrassing to watch and it’s unfair to the other contestants.

The most entertaining part of the last two nights was the Old Spice commercials which are some of the best to ever air on television. Way better than the show.

I don’t have the names down yet so I have a hard time keeping up with this thread. I do agree though, it should be easy to let go of a few boys tonite. I did like the object of Kara’s affliction (Casey?) and I liked the unseasoned but talented scrawny 16 year old. Tim Urban is not in the same league as this show…bye bye Tim. Loved Big Mike but didn’t love the last guy with the neck tattoo (but I know that he can do better so I hope he has another shot). Also liked the Asian guy and the Indian guy…told you, I am bad with names at this point of the competition. I really liked the guy with the guitar (dark hair, needs a shave) because he reminds me of a Bruce Springstein type of voice. Simon liked him too. I hated both of the first two performances (the guy who did Kelly Clarkson’s song and the other guy who did some weird “dance moves” with his head)…just NOT my style and I would never listen to either of them on the radio.
