Make sure you check on a laptop, on the phone it is easy to miss the merit letter especially after you first open the decision letter.
We can see the financial aid link⦠but no other linksā¦
We didnt fill out FAFSA as we are sure we are not eligible⦠do you think that could be the reason?
No, we didnāt fill FAFSA either. The merit letter is separate from the financial aid letter. Not everyone gets merit; in any case, itās not a lot of money relative to the full cost: 7000$ per year, some got more.
No merit letter for us but had a financial aid of 30k per semester for first year to be renewed yearly
Thats great!!
Not that many merit scholarships out there, the mentioned ones are measly $5-10k a year. NU was awarding an average of $15-20k a year to nearly 30% of the incoming class as late as last year. Where are those? Think all these record numbers of applicants got into their heads. Do they think they will yield anything without scholarships? Itās still not Harvard that can afford not giving merits while maintaining high yields.
Where did you read that? Northeastern changed the merit/need based mix several years ago in favor of need based grants.
Check their common data set under financials for those who do not need financial aid. Those are the numbers.
Per the 2024 CDS:
āNumber of students in line a who had no financial need and who were awarded institutional non-need-based scholarship or grant aid (exclude those who were awarded athletic awards and tuition benefits) 454ā
The Boston class size was about 2800. Thatās about 16% of Boston freshmen received merit aid.
Substract those who received need financial aid from 2800, which is half, and youād get 30%.
Your statement implies that 30% of entering class got merit aid last year.
right, 30% of the entering class that would not qualify for the financial aid. Guess you donāt argue the scholarship amount reduction. $5k a year donāt move a needle, itās hopefully enough to cover the yearly hike in tuition.
Not sure about higher chance of deferral if you put Boston only but my S25 put Boston only and was accepted EA to NU.In
Kind of wish they would have deferred him and given him a chance at Boston campus.
The app does not let you apply for Boston only. You are effectively required to rank your top 3 choices.
How would you prefer to join the Northeastern community?
PLEASE NOTE: You will be considered for all programs regardless of your answer.
- Starting at Northeasternās Boston degree granting campus
- Starting at Northeasternās Oakland degree granting campus
- The N.U.in Program: first semester at a global partner university
- London Scholars: first year at Northeasternās London campus
- New York City Scholars: first year at the Marymount Manhattan College campus
- Iām open to joining through any Northeastern program, and understand I could be admitted to any option listed above
What is your secondary preference for joining the Northeastern community?
What is your third preference for joining the Northeastern community?
etc.
Thanks for the clarification. My mistake. It may have been for another school where we had the choice to say main campus only. Should have checked with my daughter.
Food for thought from the student newspaper, article date 1/28/25
Folks, My D got acceptance into Boston campus. But when she clicks on the Financial award link, it says she needs to fill the CSS before knowing the aid.
Does that mean she disnt get any merit award?
Financial aid is based on your finances (think FAFSA and CSS profile). Merit aid is not based on need but on the studentās accomplishments. They have separate letters for each, one for merit, one for financial aid.
Hi so my daughter got into the Boston campus and honors program. She had a link with a scholarship for 12k/yr given by the honors program. We are seeing posts of people receiving 18k/yr, 20k/yr. My older daughter has a friend that attended 5 yrs ago and received 35k a year. Is the number based on the studentsā stats? I would think they would give the same amount to all students they admit to the honors program. Just curious if anyone knows how the amount is determined and has anyone requested a higher amount and received it or is the amount final? Thanks so much
