Federal need-based aid cannot apply for the NUIN semester because you are not matriculated into NEU formally until Spring semester. NEU used to not provide merit aid for that first semester but I think that has changed. Folks would need to confirm if merit aid is eligible to be used for NUIN with the FA office.
Have you confirmed if your merit aid applies to the NUIN semester as one of your 8 semesters? That would be good information for others.
thanksâŠI knew it was merit or aid. That makes sense since technically not matriculated yet.
So my son received a 2021-2022 Financial Aid Offer. For Fall 2021 and Spring 2022, they have evenly allocated his scholarship among those two semesters. So it shows it applying towards his first semester, which would during the NUin program. The direct unsubsidized loan only shows up for Spring of 2022.
Federal and state grants and loans cannot be used for NU In. Institutional aid (grants and scholarships) from Northeastern can be used for NU In.
Thatâs great! Awesome school, great location, CO-OP top notch opportunities, nice campus, friendly student body, job placementâŠetc!!
I donât think that is so because they offered my daughter some merit for NUin. I think maybe they are placing high stat students who look like they belong at better schools and offering NUin to avoid a low yield. Yield for this program is not considered. My guess is that many turn down this offer. I am not seeing the benefits of not being an actual student for the first semester. So classes donât count, grades donât count, no ability to take classes from renounced professors at NEU (if they have any), no ability to participate in important things like orientation, club rush, etc. They will be placed randomly in dorms around campus with roommates that may not even be Freshman. This all sounds so chaotic for a Freshman year. If students have high stats, they should have better options.
NUin classes do count, and are looked at as transfer credits. Hereâs a link for more detail: https://www.northeastern.edu/geo/students/n-u-in-transcripts/
Dude: we get it, youâre not happy about NUin. But itâs 3 months of study abroad, and many kids happily take this opportunity.
As @TomSrOfBoston said, time to move on.
1 mile walk (15 minutes) in November? COLD!
Why isnât anyone asking or concerned with WHO is teaching these courses in Boston? Are they Northeastern University professors? Does anyone even care about the quality of instruction, or just that they will be living at a Westin Hotel that is 1 mile OFF CAMPUS and AWAY from the Freshman who were legitimately accepted to the school.
Moving onâŠ
If youâre asking about NUin Boston, courses are taught by Northeastern faculty. However, there is NUin specific programming for the cohort only.

Re: the Westin being 1 mile awayâŠNUIn Boston was created in response to the global pandemic. The school secured housing for students who werenât allowed overseas.
You know, you could just push the DECLINE button on the portal.
I am curious as to what other schools you have received an acceptance from? If you have âbetterâ options, why are you still posting negative comments about the NUin program? There are students who are strongly considering the program and you honestly are not helping at all. If you have questions, call and speak to someone at the NUin program at NE. If you have any valuable info, please report back. Otherwise please move on if this is not the choice that make sense for your family.
A healthy 18 year old having to walk a mile in the cold!!! First world problem.
The Green and Orange line T subway will get you on campus in 5 minutes.
Good luck at Tulane.
Actually, Brown.
Buyer beware: You class schedule will be shared when you arrive in Boston. Does this mean students are not able to choose their classes?
Good luck at Brown.
Curious that you havenât posted over there at all.
does anyone know when you have to decide on a roommate by?
I believe its May 7 - but most students go random, so no biggie if you donât have a roommate all set-up. I think I saw that only 25% come in with a roommate request.
Hey I may need some guidance. I listed Northeastern as my first choice college on the national merit website before Northeasternâs priority deadline of April 1st hoping to hear back my amount before May 1st. I was hoping to receive around 30k/year which according to most students I had consulted was the norm, but they just updated my financial award amount to only be 15k/year (significant but honestly not enough to afford). I already put the downpayment in for Northeastern hoping to get ahead on things like housing, but this aid amount could honestly change whether or not I attend. Is there any way to negotiate with them for a higher amount? Keep in mind my EFC is too high to receive significant aid. Thanks in advance.
