Just thought I’d post stats/my story for anyone who was looking for transfer inspiration. I’m so glad that Northwestern is accepting of a wide variety of transfer students and looks for redemption/improving grades. I went to an extremely competitive public high school and did not do as well academically. I applied to Northwestern out of high school and got rejected. After many college rejections (even though I still had options), I chose to go to community college and have worked extremely hard from there. Just got my acceptance today and am so happy that the hard work paid off.

STATS:

College: Community College
GPA: 3.92 (one B in chemistry :frowning: )
Midterm Report: All A’s - submitted despite it being optional
SAT: 1520
Letters of Recommendation: Probably very average, went to teacher office hours, but they were definitely not as strong as they could be based on my relationships with them
Year: 1st year
Total units (by end of spring semester): 77 total semester units (14 units summer, 23 units fall, 6 units winter, and 23 units spring)
EC’s:

  • EMT certification
  • Work a job as a CPR instructor
  • Community photographer for hire
  • marathon runner
  • Lab volunteer
  • Tutor at CC

High School GPA: < 3.6 (unweighted)
AP Classes: 14
EC’s:

  • 1st place at international conferrence for creation of a program that grossed over $30k
  • Research report on stress project - presented to administration of school + district superintendent
  • Varsity Track and Field / XC
  • Community Service club officer
  • CTE club president
  • Student government (3 years) - 1 year as officer
  • other small activities

In my application, I attached an extra essay in the other section that highlighted my reasons for choosing community college and what I’ve gained through it (essentially the typical transfer statement specifically explaining how overwhelmed I was in high school, and how I’ve fixed my study habits through community college). I also attached writing supplement. My common app and why northwestern were probably very average.
