Daughter was deferred :frowning:. 1570 SAT, 4.0 UW, 12 AP/DE (all 5s so far); varsity athlete/captain, volunteer hours, works part-time; school ambassador, pres of NHS, lots of clubs; national merit commended, Carson Scholar and some other schools/state awards. Ranked 1/171. This is my second time through college admissions process - sometimes I wonder how need-blind this admissions process truly is… but we shall see. All works out the way it is meant to!

Congrats to all who were admitted!

Congrats!!!

Holy wow! Your amazing child will end up somewhere great and will do great things! This deferral does not diminish that in the least. And things do work out as they are meant to…

DD rejected. 35ACT / 1470 SAT… 3.95 UW, applying from NE Ohio. Ranked 2/200, and stellar letters of rec. from swim coach. Incredible full time athlete - walked on as Sophmore to tennis and made varsity, swims just below D1 times - heavily recruited by D2/D3, and intended to swim club at D1. She went for the tour of ND, got caught up in their marketing hype. A kid who was admitted last year from her HS chose public out-of-state over ND, so I’m also told that is a strike against her HS. No one from her HS got in this year. Tellingly for her, she paid the application fee out of her own waitress money. There is a life lesson there though about being taken in by slick marketing.

Son was rejected. 1460 SAT. All 4/5 on 7 AP tests taken to date (5 more this spring). Highest rigor at his school. 4 years of baseball and football. Volunteer, work, etc.

I am an alumn and my son struck me as the prototypical ND student (at least from my experience which is dated I guess). But, I am strangely at peace with it. My son seems to be as well. We are from the south and I was nervous how he would deal with the weather. We likely would have been full pay and, frankly, I’m not sure any school is worth that amount of money.

I loved my time at ND and am proud to be a member of their alumni. If my son had gotten admitted, I believe he would have attended. And we would have paid for it. But the denial feels like a weight that has been lifted. He can now forge his own path. Things have a way of working out.

Im sorry! My child was deferred also.

Notre Dame is need blind and also a school that meets 100% of financial need. I do believe they are truly need blind, they have been a leading force in need blind admissions.

My son applied to Mendoza COB.
GPA 4.20+ (0.5 weighted for Honors/AP classes), straight As Q1
SAT 1510 (790 Math)
4 APs (4s/5s) + more this year (plus plenty of honors classes)
Captain 2 sports
NHS, etc and strong extracurriculars
He is very sad but recognizes that there are a lot of amazing candidates and Notre Dame is an amazing university. He has to now decide whether to “roll the dice” and wait until March or ED2 elsewhere. Such a hard decision. We welcome opinions.

Accepted! 34 ACT, 3.96UW/4.3W, Top 4%, 10 APs

My daughter was accepted to business school. 1500 SAT, 7 AP/4DE, 4.8 weighted/4.0 unweighted. diverse ECs - works 2 jobs, 4-year V athlete, student body VP, volunteer hours at food bank and youth FH coaching, organized a couple fundraisers, good essays, and probably good LORs (her counselor told her she chose well.)

IMO this is a personal decision with no right or wrong answer. Is your son ready to turn the page on ND or will he always wonder “what if”?

Last year, my daughter was deferred from her ED1 school (I’m following these posts because S27 is very interested in ND).

She originally thought she’d ED2 to her second choice, but when push came to shove, she knew she wanted to see it through with her ED1 school. She had a few EA acceptances by late December, so she knew she was going somewhere, and she decided to stay the course and see what happened in regular decision.

Fast forward to March, she was waitlisted in regular decision, but she was accepted off the waitlist in early May! It was a long road, but it was the right path for her and she loves her school!

If your son is still all in on ND, and will wonder “what if?” then I think he should send in a loci and keep his senior year grades high and see what happens. If not, then ED2 could be great as well if he feels strongly about another school. I don’t know how many deferred students ND accepts in regular decision (that would be interesting to know).

Good luck and keep us posted!

I would have your son talk to his school’s college counselor - at the public high school my kids attend, students deferred from ND’s REA have an excellent chance of getting in RD (and plenty are denied REA). Check the numbers to see if it helps him lean one way or another.

Just for your consideration, Notre Dame is actually quite selective about who they defer from REA to RD; only about 15% of applicants are deferred to RD. If your student is deferred, then Notre Dame thinks your student will be genuinely competitive in the RD pool. Also, sometimes they defer students due to yield concerns, that is, they want to make sure the student really wants to enroll at ND. Or sometimes they want to see first semester senior year grades before making a decision. If your son really wants to go to ND, write a strong Letter of Continued Interest. (Lots of good articles and videos out there on how to write an effective LOCI.) Then, apply to a nice balance of other schools through the RD process. I feel very confident he will find someplace he will be happy and thrive among that pool of schools, even if it’s not his first choice. He’ll get to see his top school to the end and never have to wonder.

Having said all that, if he really won’t ever wonder or have regret giving up on ND, and there is a second school that might be another dream school, perhaps the EDII scenario is the best scenario. But I would opt for the other route.

Wishing you both the best.

Good luck in your decision. My child and I had this same discussion before he got his acceptance last night. I asked if he would ed2 to either of his other top choices if he was deferred from notre dame. He adamantly said no and that he would wait for notre dame. He knows someone who got off the waitlist in the summer and is now super happy at notre dame and he said he would be willing to do the same. He has been aiming for notre dame since freshman year. It definitely made me nervous though and it is a scary decision to wait for rd. Hopefully your child will have a strong feeling one way or another. Best of luck!

Notre Dame Admissions just posted this information about deferred decision. I genuinely think this is worthwhile to read and consider.

There is private Facebook group for the class of 2030

Notre Dame Parents - Class of 2030

It will be very helpful, it is run by seasoned parents and will be a great resource

The University of Notre Dame reviewed 13,711 Restrictive Early Action (REA) applications for the Class of 2030, an increase of 6 percent from last year’s total of 12,917. A total of 1,617 applicants (12%) were admitted during this cycle, each of them representing impressive academic preparation and a commitment to Notre Dame’s mission as a Catholic research university. An additional 2,608 applicants (19% of total REA applicants) were deferred for reconsideration in the spring.

Great stats for sure, but honestly fairly common for competitive ND applicants. Everyone has a compelling story to share. I’m sure your daughter will find a great university.

Our son was admitted REA to ND as a political science major. We are incredibly grateful as this is his ideal school. Recently he has expressed interest in double majoring in political science and business. Is this even possible? I believe the business school is super competitive and I don’t know how he would approach this.
