wow! I mean no one knows with NYU but I would say you have a great shot. Your resume sounds amazing even for someone already in film school or recently out…where do you live that you have gotten that much experience?

My stats are pretty low all around:
87 uw GPA
620 CR 530 math
5 honors 3 AP

founded my high school’s film club, 4 years Model UN with awards, Secretary of French Honors Society, I work on my school’s TV station, 6 Seasons of varsity sports. I took part in The NYU Future Filmmakers Workshop last year, I made some short films that were pretty good in my opinion (the one I submitted that i made at the program is silent and consequently told visually which I think they are looking for in a portfolio). I have a recommendation from a Tisch professor and I put a few months of work into my Dramatic essay to make it unique and I am proud of it.

I applied ED because it’s my dream school and I am just hoping they will look past my lower academics and experience.

Eh, why not.

95 Weighted GPA
36 ACT
10 APs, 5 Senior Year. Grades werent submitted (no need to with the ACT), but i got one 3, three 4s, and one 5 so far.
4 Years of Video Production Classes, Independent Study in Special Effects, Animation Class, Recording Class
National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, AP Scholar With Distinction, Commended National Merit Scholar
President of school Radio Station, VP of Jazz Band and Marching Band, Tri-M Officer, Member of the school Pit Orchestra, Head Counselor of a Video Production program at a camp for the gifted.
A little bit of community service.
High-ranked, large public school in Long Island, NY
Non-URM

I haven’t had much experience in film festivals or anything of that sort. However, I am confident in my portfolio film as well as my writing ability. I dont know if it will have any impact on NYU’s opinion, but every single role in the production of my portfolio aside from the actual acting was done by me (which I’m sure is the case for most people). I have taken part in many projects, over 100 total, because of my work during the summer as a counselor.

I dont know if it makes a difference, but my guidance counselor is an NYU alumnus (obviously not Tisch, but im not sure exactly which school) and she wrote a rec for me. And the other teacher who wrote a rec for me is possibly the most intellectual person I have ever met in my life, so i would like to think she wrote a good rec hahaha.

3.8 GPA (4.2 weighted)
2140 SAT (800 CR, 700 W, 640 M)

I’m in the film/media program at an arts school in San Francisco (although I’ve only actually been in that program for two years). I’ve made two short films completely independently, both of which were shown at my school’s Media Night events, and I’ve directed at least ten other films. Other than that, my ECs aren’t all that great: two paid internships and two school clubs that I was president of (just for a year).

Does anyone know how male-dominated Tisch is in comparison to other film schools? My film teacher thinks that being female will be a plus factor for me getting in, but NYU does seem to have a female majority.

Im not sure if NYU considers gender ratio of specific schools, or just the college as a whole. If so, I would imagine it greatly helps your chances, as most Tisch film applicants I know of are male. But then again, I would imagine that the musical theater and photography departments are generally female dominated. However, your SAT and GPA are both very good, so that certainly helps you.

@ohthehumanity–thanks, I hope my resume will make up for my lower GPA. You have pretty similar grades, and good film stuff as well. Plus, going to the Tisch summer program is a huge advantage, as well as the recommendation. I would assume your portfolio is good if you made it NYU and if they gave you any guidance. For me, I think it comes down to my film that I submited. I live in CT just outside NYC in a very arts/film supporting community. The experience comes from initiative. For example, for the actors, it kind of ruins a film when you have 14 year olds playing 35 year olds, so we started approaching SAG actors and asking if they are willing to work for free, and then we network within the actors we know. There are a lot of resources out there–from getting student discounts for food,to great locations, and great actors–all you have to do is ask people if they can help.

You other 2 are def for sure in/above the academic profile, and it sounds like you both have good ECs.

Anyone hear of people getting LSPd for film this year? They LSPd a pretty good number last year for film.

This thread is blowing me away! I doubt any of you should have any problems at all getting in. As far as LSP goes, i remember hearing from an admissions counselor at NYU that the reason a lot of film majors get LSPed is because their writing isn’t quite up to par.

Hey guys,

here are my stats, they are nothing compared to all of yours… :frowning:
97% GPA
27 ACT
3 AP classes 3 Honor Classes
I go to a small catholic school where there arent any film classes available so i got really involved in technical theater.
National Honor Society, 3 year Stage manager for musicals, plays and various shows, I was accepted to be on a film crew for Chicago for Samsung Mobile Fresh Films Competition where our film “Out With THe Trash” was awarded the Viewer’s Choice Silver Award at the Youth Fest at the AFI Film Festival in 2008, I directed, filmed, and edited multiple films for my high school from football highlights, Lent videos, Senior videos, and also other various sport teams highlight videos. i have worked as an honor caddie at my golf course for 5 years. I also interned at a small production company and worked on some short films with them.

i know my chances arent very strong because of the lack of film experience i have through school… but NYU is my dream and now im really scared…
I was told that my dramatic essay was very good, my extra curricular activities were laudable, my gpa was good and my essays were average/“there” and that my film was good. the people i showed my film too liked it but idk how it is going to compare to all of your amazing films…

good luck guys…

I hope that no one gets demoralized reading this thread. I like to think that the ones who freak out about colleges are the ones who are most qualified…for proof of that just look at the ivy boards…so the people posting here are more competitive than most. Tisch is very subjective too, so I think everyone here has a very good chance at getting in.

Also, no one here has been LSP’d, so thats a good sign.

Itsme, you have a great GPA, and it sounds like you have film experience–and not having experience can’t hurt you. I feel like I’m on the short end of this group because my grades are well below NYU averages–I thought I would be LSPd. It’s not too bad for film. It’s just 1 year (not 2 like all other majors) and all you have to do is get a 3.0. Plus, you can still work on Tisch students films. Only difference is you don’t take the basic film classes the first year…a lot of them are very basic anyways and many of us know the stuff they teach (such as Final Cut Pro basics and stuff).

As far as ‘ones who freak out about colleges are the ones who are most qualified’: I agree, and I think I am qualified, but I’m not sure I conveyed it through my essays which are good but not great, and I’m not too confident in my portfolio film bc it’s abstract.

At least 1 or 2 of us will get in…

Did everyone else apply ED?

also @itsme, go on youtube, there are plenty of NYU portfolio films you can compare yours to.

ED for me.

Current Junior
Weighted GPA: 4.3
4 honors/2 APs (honors science, honors english, honors history, AP music theory, AP chemistry. I plan to take 4 APs next year).
SAT: Aiming for a 2200, currently getting around 2000 on my practice tests.
I also plan to go to the NYU Tisch Summer Program.

Extracurriculars:
Play in a band (released one album, written over 15 songs, played over 20 concerts, featured in three publications, appeared on a Pepsi commercial that aired across all Viacom networks, August 2009 to present)
Member of choir (jazz choir and chamber choir, September 2010 to present)
Part of a community service board (plans, organizes, and executes events for the local teen center, meets once a week, September 2009 to present)
Part of high school school swim team (November 2009 to present)
Honor Society (2008 to present)
Founder and president of high school Film Club (meets once a week to watch and discuss films, October 2010 to present)
Film (written several scenes/screenplays, made four short films)

You guys all look realllly good. Please chance me! Thanks.

bluepin–With those great grades, you are set on that side, and thats about 50% of the battle. If you get into the summer program (and can afford the $8,000 to go) I think you have a real good shot if you show pretty good storytelling ability in your tisch portfolio (which requires a 4pg dramatic essay, a resume, and either a up to 10 min video or photos, or a drawn storyboard, or possibly other options that i dont remember).

Hi everyone,

I’m a freshman in the film program right now, and I just wanted to tell you all something I wish someone had told me.
I had no film experience prior to arriving here. Absolutely none. I hadn’t made a single film. I opted to send in my photography for my portfolio and I ended up getting accepted.
So to anyone reading these threads and feeling inadequate because you haven’t had the resources or opportunity to make your own films, DON’T WORRY.
The admissions board has an eye for seeing prospective talent, too, and I am thankful for that every day I’m here.

On a side note, the film program is amazing – it’s everything I wanted and more, so to all of you GOOD LUCK and I wish you the best!!! Maybe I’ll see you here next year!

Whoa that’s great lostspaz. Would you mind posting your resume? Thanks, and enjoy life at NYU. I greatly envy the position you are in. :)

lostspaz thanks!!! :)

Ok this is driving me crazy. I’m going to risk someone I know seeing this and I posted my portfolio. Please watch and lemme know what you think. I know the middle is edited too slowly, and there are some small mistakes (like a dolly shot that missed its target), but in general what do you all think? and did you understand the story? If some ppl do that for me–I will do in return.
Thanks

Does anyone know if they mail the decisions so they are received by December 15? or are they mailed on December 15? How do you know if all the components of your application were received?
