Octogenarian romances? Who has had experience with this with their parents/in-laws?

Dehydration is a big concern, especially when people have a tough time keeping liquids down. The IV fluids was a good idea. They may not have wanted her to stay and risk getting an infection from someone or something at hospital.

My H is 84 and has been sent home multiple times from the ER. He was only kept one time, for observation to be sure he didn’t start bleeding again (he had surgery earlier that day & site was bleeding). ERs are just to put out brush fires and then have you go see the internist and specialist to follow up.

Maybe chicken soup and plain bread?

They probably gave her Zofran to stop the nausea. Hope she feels better soon. Pain meds definitely should be taken with food to avoid nausea and vomiting.

One thing we have found very helpful is that after an ER visit, they are generally able to fit the patient in to see the internist and specialist within 48 hours.

My mom swore by soda crackers / saltines and 7up (preferably a bit flat so not too carbonated), for upset tummies.

Our D liked chicken broth with white rice and some shreds of chicken.

There are very strict insurance guidelines for admission to the hospital based on diagnosis, symptoms and test results.

So a patient with nausea and vomiting for example will undergo tests for infection (blood, urine) and a CT scan to rule out a bowel obstruction/gall bladder issues. If those are negative, generally there is no justification to keep a patient in the hospital.

Usual course of treatment is IV fluids and an anti nausea medication.

Hope she is better soon.

Even if the instructions are may take medication and/or supplement with or without food, people with sensitive stomachs and who are more prone to nausea should always take medications (& supplements) WITH food unless specifically instructed NOT to.

If nausea persists, maybe MIL can call the prescribing MD for instructions about stopping one or more of the medications to see if that improves things. She was likely told to make an appt & see internist asap. Hope she does!

I hope MIL feels some improvement today.

Did they say what made them decide to go to the ER? Just that she was vomiting or did she start feeling dizzy or have other symptoms? Was Bob just unsure imofnwhT to do for her? (Regardless I am glad they went and that there were no pressing concerns to keep her)

@Hoggirl thank you for sharing your story. I have elderly parents/in-laws and I know the struggle to be present and involved without being overbearing. You are doing a great job of managing a complex situation.

As a side note, I’ve learned many interesting things in this thread - like monkey pictures, and boating safety, and side effects of meds. thanks for being informative!

She says she is feeling much better this morning. Her dismissal papers say to follow up with her doc to discuss meds. She does say her back/hip pain is much improved, so we are thinking that the Cortisone shot in her hip may have worked??

My concern is what I am reading about Serotonin Syndrome with the combo of medications she is taking. Dr. Google is a bit of a scary place. But, I don’t want a bandaid. They need to try to determine what caused this in the first place.

I’m wondering if she herself is unclear about dosing. I will offer, yet again, to accompany her. Sigh.

They are thinking they will still take their cruise which leaves a week from tomorrow.

Glad to hear both her stomach and hip/back are feeling better. Hopefully they will be able to go on the cruise.

I’m glad to hear she is feeling improved. Maybe she should ask her doc what they think of her going on a cruise next week.

Was SIL at all upset about mil being ill and going to the ER? Like, regretful upset?
MIL is 87 and the chances of a a fluke illness or injury being extremely detrimental to her well being increases all the time. I don’t say this to be alarming but many of us have experienced a loved one who was literally seemingly healthy one day and gone the next. :woman_raising_hand:t2:. It’s silly but I want to shake SIL and say, don’t wait until it’s too late!!

My husband was in the ED a couple of weeks with the same problems.

We were told that there is a lot of gastro issues going around. They did a CT scan and X-rays.

It could have been a medication problem but after 2 bags of fluid and some Zofran, he felt and has continued to feel great. He did pass a kidney stone around 10 days later although nothing showed up on the CT scan.

The doctor’s office called first thing Monday morning and he saw his PCP and not the PA.

Hope your mil’s issues are as easily solved as my H’s were.

Sending hugs. I hope this is a tiny blip and not the canary in the coal mine for MIL.

If it helps- I found staying off WebMD and Dr. Google when my parents and in-laws were dealing with something was a good thing for my peace of mind. Especially when I knew they were not taking advice-- or interested in having me accompany them to appointments. The time came when they NEEDED me to go with them (driver, haul the walker into the elevator, hoist them up on the examining table, answer questions when their answer was a baffled “I don’t remember” AND to produce the meds list). But prior to that- the internet was not my friend!

You are surely earning your DIL and “Best Wife Ever” merit badges!

TL;DR!! sorry, this is a looong ranting vent.

My dh is leaving tomorrow on a business trip. He and my ds planned a hike today so they could get some quality time in together. Since mil wasn’t admitted, they decided to go ahead and go.

I convinced mil (with the help of sil) to allow me to go get her some groceries. She had said the two of them were going later today. We finally convinced her. She sent me a list. When I arrived around 1:00, she was still in pjs. She answered the door. Clearly exhausted, weak, and drained. We got most things put away, with no sign of Bob. “Where’s Bob?” “Oh, he’s showering and getting ready. He’s going to…” I gave her a look - “He’s not going to the boat. He’s going to Dillard’s.” Me: “Why is he going to Dillard’s?” Mil: “He needs to get some shirts.” Me: “I don’t think you should be here by yourself.” She disagreed, but I stayed anyway. She had not had anything to eat other than half a piece of toast. She was really sluggish and not super lucid.

Bob eventually wandered in. Left to go to Dillard’s. I went over her hospital papers. She claims she took her medication list with her when they went to the hospital. However, not all her medications were listed, and the Tramadol was noticeably absent. Hospital said to follow up with PCP in a week. They don’t have a week - they are going on this cruise. Their PCP is at the CCRC, and she isn’t in until Wednesday. They think (but don’t know) that another doctor is there on Tuesday, but they know there is no doctor there at all on Mondays.

Honestly, I wasn’t very nice to her. I asked her if she thought Bob was capable of taking care of her. “I do.” When I pointed out that he couldn’t see well, couldn’t hear well, and that I had witnessed memory lapses, she just sat there and said nothing. Eventually, she just said, “Well, if he can’t they will over there,” and pointed in the direction of the AL section.

Got some Pedialyte, plain chicken broth, and half a banana in her. I also asked if Bob was incapable of going to the store by himself. She said he wasn’t incapable and he’d gone yesterday. But apparently only got some kind of cooked? Frozen? No idea? eggs that HE wanted and some Gatorade for her. He has to have eggs every morning which she usually cooks for him. Yet, I had to buy regular eggs today. I asked if he could cook an egg. “Just the pre-cooked kind he buys.” (I have no idea what she’s talking about unless he bought hard-boiled eggs??) She’d unloaded the top half of. the dishwasher. So, I asked if he was incapable of unloading the dishwasher. She said he could do that. Then why hasn’t he??? Why are you doing it??? She has not been able to keep food down for two days. She claims he would help if she asked. Then ASK! I told her she was not put on this earth to wait on a man. On any man!

Bob came back. Didn’t have any shirts because the woman who helped him last time wasn’t there. He wants the same kind as he got last time, but he doesn’t know where they are. So he has to go back another time. Wants them for their trip. Tell me the brand, and I’ll get the shirts. “Oh, no. I have to have my person help me.”

I wrote a note to give to the medical person at the CCRC. Asking to please review her meds and dosages after her intractable vomiting and Saturday evening ED visit.

As I left he thanked me for getting groceries and feeding her something. That was what she needed. Then WHY didn’t he do those things?? How hard is it to buy chicken broth when you go to the store?

Oh, and when I left - he winked at me! “Bob, please do not wink ar me.” “Oh, I didn’t.”! “You did and you winked at me when we saw you at the Mexican restaurant. Please don’t do that. Women don’t like to be winked at.” He seemed quite shocked and flustered I said that to him.

A truly, truly maddening afternoon.

We are vacationing in Florida during part of the time they are on their cruise I told dh we need to take our passports with us in case we need to fly to Canada if something happens to her.

I’m so sorry that Bob is being SO inattentive and self-centered. I guess he’s “true to form,” in any case. Glad you told him to STOP winking. He may get slapped or worse if it does it to others and they also don’t like it. He’s really something else. MIL is so lucky you were willing to help and got her to eat and drink a bit. And that you got her groceries that are good for HER!

I think this kind of help by you is greatly needed.

This is all both alarming and infuriating. She’s not getting the care she clearly needs, and especially at her age this kind of malady can go wrong in several ways. Particularly this constellation of current issues is the type of precipitating event for a bad fall. Dizzy, dehydrated, unstable on her feet, foggy thinking, already in pain, a medication cocktail that may or may not be affecting all of this…her risk for a bad fall is high (and she has issues with her back and hip already), and a bad fall for an elderly person is often the beginning of a swift downward spiral.

I can only imagine that Bob just thinks she’ll be somebody else’s problem to deal with on the cruise - she’ll have meals delivered to the cabin and perhaps a nurse or doctor on board, and he can go do whatever he wants.

Going to Dillards to noodle around and pick up some shirts while she’s sick and needs care? Wow.

Hopefully she will let you or another family member in the PCP appointment to clarify her medications. I used to be on speaker phone in my mom’s visits which really was the key to keeping medication errors to a minimum.

I highly recommend she have a medication box set up as well. Family can pre fill for the month based on the current/updated medication list.

Sometimes in assisted senior communities there is a nurse who can perform this service.

Remember to remove medications from the home that have been discontinued.

Medication errors are one of the most common reasons that the elderly end up in the hospital.

Wow! First, I’m so sorry to hear she had to go to the ER. However, it is extremely concerning what you mentioned about the meds. She is so lucky to have you! It’s good SIL went, too. How was the dynamic between her and Bob.

I’m thinking Bob went to Dillards not only to buy shirts, but to flirt with the sales lady. That’s why only he can go. And good for you addressing the winking! Had you prepared yourself to say that when it happened again (I have to prepare myself for these types of occasions). It sounds very stern , so I’m assuming you, at that moment with all the MIL stuff, were absolutely not happy. When I’m miffed things come out more forceful. I wanted to pump my fist reading that and yell, “YES, you Go Girl” reading how you put him in his place, especially when he tried to lie about it. Did MIL hear all of it?

I can’t believe they are going on a cruise with her not well. That is ALL Bob pushing it. Do you think she would listen to your DH if he expressed his concerns? Probably not.

What a freakin mess.

Bob and his eggs.

With all the cruise illnesses out there it seems really risky to put an already unwell woman on that boat.

Hope they purchased trip insurance for this trip

Won’t add too much more except to see that mil has a list of medications written down so she can have the list when she sees any doctor

Bob is exactly who he was reported to be. Nothing surprises me at this moment
