Octogenarian romances? Who has had experience with this with their parents/in-laws?

Well, you did the right thing coming here and letting us know.

Whoa boy. Lot of information. Bob can’t seem to find a moment to shine. I sure hope the wedding on his bday doesn’t turn into a “me me me” day for him.

This is a lot so fast for you all @Hoggirl .

Thanks for the update. They’re gonna do what they wanna do.

I hope your MIL has a more significant “say” in which of her furnishings she wishes to keep and bring to their new shared home.

Wow. Since this will be a major downsizing you and H should put dibs on items in her house also (not just sil).

MIL may think she’s keeping her house until March but even if it sells in the first week- there could be months where it’s empty before the buyers close. So keep that in mind re: maintenance.

Hugs to you. I hope the clarity helps. I go back to the earlier discussion- your MIL clearly is in her comfort zone with a controlling husband (no matter what his name is). Don’t know that there’s a fix for that, except to be cheered that this time around she has her own money in her own name and doesn’t need her husband’s permission to spend it.

Bob still sounds like a butthead.

There is not one single thing from her house my dh wants other than a scrapbook his dad’s mom (dh’s grandmother) made about his dad’s football playing in high school and college.

Good point about the house sitting empty. My sister and her husband put their house on the market in March, and it still hasn’t sold. They’ve needed to pay to remove wasp’s nests and clean the inside thoroughly - it’s amazing how quickly dust covers everything. They are really strapped, paying for these expenses plus owning another house where they moved. :frowning: The current asking price is about 78% of what they first listed the house for.

Someone has already contacted Friend L (who is also a neighbor) about when mil’s house might be available.

No guarantees, of course, but I think many sell off market. Word of mouth. People in the ‘hood have friends who want to be in there.

Will you be the flower girl? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Have fun on your trip as the next month sounds like it could be a lot!

RED FLAG!! RED FLAG!! That’s what a pre-nup is for, for goodness sake. Tell MIL to sign the damn thing, and have Bob sign his piece, before November 24.

Agree. Protect MIL from Bob’s debts or financial liabilities…

Takes two to tango.

I don’t know what she will do if he refuses to sign.

I fear that MIL was expecting a romantic wedding proposal… but Bob’s not that kind of guy.

Thought of you all when we were in London. My sweetie husband really had very little interest himself in going to an afternoon tea, but he knew it was something I’d like. So he researched and found a nice place to go before going to the theater (Mousetrap - also found availability for Moulin Rouge, and he deferred to me to choose). Was thinking it was too bad that Bob didn’t have the same kind of good listening, big heart.

Good for your hubby! Very thoughtful. Marriage is about compromising and give and take.

Unless you’re Bob. Then it’s just about what you want and taking

Oof - what an update, less than ideal all around.

I think I speak for many here that would say we all care about you and how this is affecting your family! I hope you can set this aside for the time being, and thoroughly enjoy your vacation with dh and friends.

She should seek advice of her attorney if Bob is not on board with the prenup.

I do not like Bob.

I do not like Bob.

I do not like Bob.

She needs a ring, flowers and a proper proposal along with that prenup.

Sounds like MIL is pushing marriage rather than Bob? Or hard to tell?

It’s pretty self absorbed to have your wedding day be on your birthday. And not even officially propose to your fiance.

If Bob (or MIL) doesn’t sign the prenup, all of her property on Nov 23 still remains her property. Marital proper is what is obtained with marital assets after the marriage, or an increase in value. This is of course a much bigger deal if a divorce happens after 30 years of marriage when property has had years to increase in value, funds have been comingled, and there aren’t good records of what was whose and how it was purchased. Do I think this will be a 30 year marriage? Um, Bob isn’t going to live to 116

It is easier and cleaner to spell it all out in a pre-nup, but if that doesn’t happen, it’s not the end of the world. MIL should have good records of what was hers (and she had to prove it to the CCRC when she applied), how much she sells her house for, that her car is her car, that her bank accounts are hers. If she starts spending her money on ‘them’, that’s harder to get back but it would be even with the pre-nup.
