Odds of getting off Waitlist

Recently Waitlisted at Boston College, and am wondering the odds of getting off. It says they accept 50-300 from an active waiting list of 4,000 but I am assuming everyone does not submit an LoCI. Does not submitting an LoCI automatically remove you?

Also wondering if I do get off the waitlist, when I would find out. Thanks!

Based on the stats you cited, about 5%.

No

No personal experience with BC waitlists, but most schools typically start going to the waitlist after the commitment deadline, or very close to it.

In general, you should not expect to get off a waitlist. I’m sorry, I know that’s not what you want to hear but it’s the truth. You should be falling in love with another school that’s accepted you, with an expectation to enroll there. Then if you get a happy surprise next month that’s great. But don’t count on it.

The last wait list they reported (but that is 3 years old), 13,040 were offered (yes, schools do this…and it’s unfair to the kids…but offer more WL than even offered admission). 8,019 accepted and 13 came off.

When you are Wait Listed, you have not been accepted. I call it rejected (as did a public in Virigina to my daughter) - but it’s not something you should think about.

Do your LOCI and then forget about it.

The school is simply using you as a hedge, an insurance policy, for their benefit in case those they invited - not enough accept.

Fall in love with that #2. Find a roommmate and get it out of your head. Just assume it’s not happening. If it somehow comes back to you, then you can adjust.

Unfortunately, BC doesn’t seem to have a 2022-23 CDS or 23-24 to get you more info.

If you’re reading 3rd party stuff like Ivy Coach - they are guessing - and they note it.

Good luck.

Agree with every post in this thread, but if you really want BC, then fight for it. Send in the LOCI and be very clear to state (if true) that if you are offered admission that you will accept.

Unfortunately BC is unlikely to happen. Certainly send in a LOCI if you like – but then it is time to move on and get excited about attending a college you have been accepted to.

Is this you who got accepted to these colleges? If so, I would suggest you choose amongst your acceptances. IF (big IF) you happen to get off the waitlist at BC, you can revisit this then. In the meantime…love the schools who loved you back. They are all fine colleges.

Gap year idea also got ditched?

I’ll tag @DramaMama2021 who I think has a kid at W and L.

I cannot keep the full ride scholarship (Evans) if I take a gap year so I would say that’s pretty much out of the question. Also I have realized my odds of getting into select schools will not really increase with a gap year.

Wow - UMN full ride as in room and board too.

Incredible.

All of them are incredible. I’m assuming there’s need aid mixed in though - given the W&M #. So if you have need, I could see the tilt toward UMN.

Congrats to you.

Great choices.

PS - not sure about BC but many colleges use “need” as a determinant for their wait list…ie. they want full pay.

You need to commit to one of your other schools if you’re not taking a gap year. WL movements usually happen after the commitment date.

You can switch to BC later if you get off the waitlist.

Waitlists can happen at any time. We know a student who was accepted off a waitlist the second week of August. She was all set to move in somewhere else.

That’s correct. My D is a junior at W&L. Happy to answer any questions, @collegesearihuuhu

Did everyone get a survey today about Waitlist interest?
