*Official Class of 2016 University of Michigan EA Decisions Thread*

that is the same one i got @withtwol’s. that is the ‘good’ one because it does not ask you to send in grades. i am also applying to kines. what are your stats?

Gotcha. Do you think it would help to send them in if they’re not an improvement, just consistent with your overall GPA? Or just leave it alone? And when they say mid-April, is that how long we’re actually gonna have to wait? Or will it be sooner?

My stats are definitely nothing to be proud of, I think the only reason I have a shot is the strength of my essays; they are by far the strongest part of my application. I have a 3.4/2010 SAT. I can’t say I was surprised to get deferred, nor would I be to ultimately not make it. Michigan is not the be all/end all for me.

well a lot of people who get the letter we got… actually get accepted before they need to send in their grades… but i am gonna send in my grades if i have not heard from them yet because it can’t hurt because my senior year grades are good. most people with the letter we have hear within a week-2 months.

Thanks for your help Lindsy! When you say “but i am gonna send in my grades if i have not heard from them yet” what do you mean? If you haven’t heard in the 1 week - 2 month window?

no i mean like if i have not heard from them by the time the semester is done then i’ll send in my grades!

Oh, gotcha! My first semester has already finished so once we resume I’ll talk to my counselor and see about sending them in. Hopefully we’ll both be in by then anyway!

I’m not buying the whole “good deferral” theory.
Obviously, there is one bad one (the one that doesn’t say “multiple” reviews.) But I honestly don’t see how not having it suggesting you to send in semester grades is a good thing. I think that either has something to do with the school you’re applying to do. I haven’t seen a letter from CoE that doesn’t suggest sending in grades.

@jaico22 i have just read multiple threads from previous years and the people with this letter hear sooner.

I was part of this deferral debate last year when everyone got their letters. From what I received (and what other around me got as well) there were 3 deferral letters sent out to students who applied for fall 2011.

The first (and most common) was the one that started with
“After…” And did not ask for any grades.

The second was very similar to the first, but DID ask for grades to be sent in

The third was the one (Which is the one I got, and the one that I think is the “good” one)
started with the works “Thank you”. Because it CLEARLY states in that specific deferral letter that “this is still good news” and that the applicant is “part of a selected group who’s application remains under review”.

BUT, these are all theories when deciding which is the “best”. I had the third one, yet I was wait-listed and not offered a spot at the school. 2 of my friends got the first one and were offered spots in mid-march to LSA after being deferred.

-To be honest, the third one just sounds like they ran out of time and have yet to look at the application. The first one sounds like they deferred you and are going to look at you again later. The second one sounds like they need to know your grades before they can make their final decision. I would be most content with the second one. Just because I know that they are thinking about me, and want to know how well I can preform before they make their final decision.

BUT this was all in 2011, who knows what everything looks like now.

Hope everything works out for you guys :)

I have the first one. I heard this one was the best.

also… the first letter was the first batch of deferrals sent out.

Welp, studied for my spanish and economics finals and got another email scare from Rensselaer. Other than that, it’s been all quiet on the western front.

Hopefully I hear tomorrow. AND Chicago’s admissions come out tomorrow. Gonna be a big day!

What happened with the Michigan EA decisions this year? Can anyone elighten me on what has everyone riled up this year? Is it a repeat of last year where they just deferred everyone? Just wondering.

When does regular decision start rolling?

@jawbreaker 81, I’m from Chicago and received my deferral letter at 11:49 yesterday morning. I got the second letter, the one that asks for grades. But I don’t think that one is bad because those who received this one had something “unique” to offer to the campus. I don’t know, I’m hoping that I hear before the mid-April time because by then I would have already pretty much decided which school I’m attending. When do we find out about financial aid?

So if we’re deferred, will our application be looked at first or after all the RD applications have come in?

@seahawks506 - it seems like everyone who got their decisions on the first day (friday the 16th) was accepted, and everyone who got their email on the 17th got deferred. i’m not sure if they’re emailing the applicants by decision, but i certainly hope not. i know a lot of VERY qualified applicants who got deferred. at my school (in-state), it seems like only the 4.3 gpa students with the 33+ act scores got accepted.

@cyu2012

I got accepted to Engineering with a 2010 SAT (equivalent ACT 30). That said, I did have a 4.62 GPA.

I was also admitted, with a 3.7 and a 33. So I don’t think they just picked the people with top stats. I think they actually did give a personalized, holistic review, at least for my application. Ultimately a lot of deferred applicants get in (at least they did last year) so don’t lose hope!

Can some 1 tell me if this is a good or bad deferral ?

Dear Jeremy:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2012. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2012.

Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Be sure your U-M ID XXXXXXXXX is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer

Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director
