Deferred
ACT: 31 composite
GPA: 4.2292 Weighted (dunno UW)
I have taken all Honors since freshman year, and Junior and Senior I have taken a total of 6 or 7 AP classes.
Essays: It was clear UM is my first choice, as it is. I also wrote about how my father was an influence in my life in his decision to flee the Yugoslav Wars to raise his son in a better place. I am the first in my entire family to go to school in the US.

Extra Curriculars: Student Newspaper: Sports Editor, Student Council for 3 years and School Spirit chair for 2 of them. Speech Team for 2 years, made Captain the 2nd year. A whole bunch of other things.

My teacher recs were fantastic.

Honestly shocked I got deferred. I don’t really know what to say.

man, i really feel bad for everyone getting deferred. but at least try to think that its not rejection. unlike what may be coming for some of us. =( and besides, seems like deferrees ultimately get accepted. so…be patient.

Sorry to hear that firesoul. I’m still waiting on anything over here, not sure if that’s good or bad. I can’t imagine I would be outright rejected, but I guess all I can do is wait.

accepted to LSA! so relieved - especially after seeing these deferrals! seems like you all have great credentials… so surprised.

in-state, 4.0 UW, 28 ACT, good essays/recs, etc… i go to a very small public school and they usually accept a lot of students. seems kind of bizarre though because about 20 applied out of my class of 73 and i know of 10 that have been accepted. and there’s probably more. all well qualified, but some less-so than people on here that have been deferred!

i really don’t get how the whole admissions process works. all i can say is i’m thankful that i got in!

also wanted to pose a question. i’m fairly certain i want to study international relations, but let’s say there’s a good chance i change my mind. if you were me, would go choose u of m or a school like northwestern/uchicago/johns hopkins?

i applied to those as well, and i just want to see if i have a shot… but if admitted, i don’t know what i’d do. on one hand, michigan is perfect if you’re undecided; it has so much to offer. on another hand, i can’t help but think about putting the university of chicago on my resume vs. u of m. you know?

then again, uchicago means a heck of a lot more work. and michigan, while it provides a fantastic education, is more balanced in terms of social aspects.

the more i think about it the more i love u of m. haha but i would like some other input!

(just something to think about for those of you awaiting decisions )

@lindsy You got a different email because you applied to a different school. There is no difference between “good” deferred and “bad” deferred. Unless you can provide citations to this belief i wouldn’t consider it a credible thesis although i do hope you, me, and all the other deferred people who genuinely want to go here and consider it their first choice get in!

here’s the reasoning behind things.
if you have low stats, they will accept you b/c u dont’ have a chance at getting into ivies/etc.
if you have high stats, they will reject you unless u come through as someone who really wants to be at umich.
=)
LOOLol

@maladroite no this is not true. the emails that were sent at 12:15 and received at 2:15 (no matter what school) all were like this. even a student last year commented and said there was a difference.
