Can someone explain why these ivy ready students are applying to pitt ? Do they even plan on attending or its just a safety school ?

Just because you have the stats to attend an “Ivy league” school doesn’t mean you will get in. And just because you get in doesn’t mean you can afford it. Not everyone will get financial aid, our family makes too much for any financial aid but not enough to afford the full freight of a CMU, Harvard or MIT. Both our kids had great stats but knew if they got into an “Ivy” school/MIT/CMU, we would not be able to afford it so they chose to apply to schools who give great merit aid. Pitt was one of those schools. Pitt is a very good school and you will be challenged there. It has worked out great for older DS and who knows, younger DS might end up there too :)

I know people place a big emphasis on “prestige” but we placed a bigger emphasis on our kids graduating debt free.

Pitt is full of Ivy caliber students. And why shouldn’t it be? It is a great research university with a world class reputation. Do the math: I read that there are about 50K high schools in the US. That’s 50,000 valedictorians and 50,000 salutatorians. Add to that the kids who are NMS Commended, NMSF and NMF (not all overlap), and the kids with uber high SATs (again not all overlap.) The Ivys could fill their frosh classes many times over with just these students - not to mention the kids who are talented in other respects. And, even if the Ivys could admit all of these students, not all of these kids could afford to go there even if accepted. So, where do these intelligent, highly qualified kids go? Well, they go to places like Pitt! Take a look at Pitt’s Common Data Set and you will see for yourself the percentage of kids there that have high SATs and high GPAs. It’s a great university, and a terrific value. . .especially with the generous merit scholarships that Pitt offers. I am sure that Pitt may be considered a “safety” for some students, but so what? What matters is where do YOU want to go and why? Make your evaluation of school based upon YOUR needs and YOUR family’s needs.

27 on ACT w/ 9 on writing
79th out of 369 in class rank
GPA 3.76 weighted
Took all honors classes throughout HS and this year I am taking 3 AP’s

For me personally, Pitt was a great choice to apply to. By like November I was accepted with Honors and a full tuition scholarship, which is an amazing option to have in the bag while I wait for other decisions. It’s a good school, awesome turn around time on the app, generous with scholarships, all around top-notch safety.

I agree wholeheartedly. My D is ‘ivy caliber’ student but dislikes the hype about ivys. She has applied to uva, William and mary and a couple of ivys like U Penn and Dartmouth and Harvard. But even if she got in she will consider the finances, the likelihood of doing well with good gpa to get ready for med school and the atmosphere.

Extremepower…do you know the acceptance rates at HYPSM? A senior would be foolish not to apply to other schools. My son has applied to some of those, but even with superstar scores and resume, he has very little chance of being admitted, as does everyone else that applies (well, except for Uni and her mysteriously unique EC  ). We also have some precarious financial circumstances and not sure how aid will play out. I told my son in August that if I had to bet, I’d bet he’d end up at Pitt (with Bama as his true safety if Pitt didn’t offer full tuition)…trying to save him the grief of doing all those apps and enjoying his senior year, but he wanted to try. We won’t know until April for sure, but I’m still thinking Pitt is the one.

Has anyone heard from Chancellor’s yet? I submitted mine Dec.4 and have been anxiously waiting for a reply…

No, I submitted mine back in November. Although it looks like last year, everyone heard around late march, so that could be whats happening this year.

S has not heard either but word around Pitt is they are trying not to have it be as late as last year.

Decision: Accepted to Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences

Don’t they have to contact us earlier about the interviews for Chancellors Scholarship?? How soon will that be do you all think?

I was just looking at that today…looks like last year it was really late…end of March/early April…decisions looked to be at the end of April. Maybe that’s why there were so few takers! I hope they’ll do it sooner this year.
