I thought I read somewhere on this forum that Illinois made the ACT mandatory. If this made people decide not to take the SAT and to stick with the ACT, then perhaps these people also decided to forgo the PSAT, which is only useful for the SAT (and NMS)… fewer students taking the PSAT would have contributed to the large cut-off decrease in Illinois.

Just a thought… I don’t know much about Illinois or the ACT.

Anyways, I guess this confirms that my 223 in CT is enough! (I’ll probably have to wait a week or two for the official notice) Thanks, Magic2!

The ACT has been mandatory in Illinois public schools since 2000. And even before that, the ACT was the standardized test of choice for Illinois students. But that doesn’t mean that top Illinois students skip the PSAT. Trust me, they take it. If an ACT-only student learns in August or September that he or she has made the NMSF cutoff, he or she simply takes the SAT in the fall of senior year to confirm for finalist status.

If it’s true that the cutoff dropped 5 points in Illinois this year, it’s not because top kids decided to pass on the PSAT.

I got a 214, was given a packet…was shocked and asked my principle what the cutoff was since I really doubted I’d make it. He said I just made it, it’s 214.

Whitman08, I take it you go to whitman in montgomery county? How did you find out so soon? Our school has not released the names of this years semifinalists. Did you ask your principal personally?

If what you say is true, I am very very happy.

CanMom, I can confirm that Texas cutoff is 215, so if your child has at least 215 he/she will be semifinalist. We have a small Christian school and so I saw letter to the principal and it is definitely 215 as bottom cutoff. congrats.

Thank you ProudParentof4! We expected he would just miss the cutoff, so this will be a great surprise. The Regents Scholarship at Baylor would be very nice!
