OFFICIAL National Merit Semifinalist Cutoff Scores 2007

Proudparentof4, are you saying that once they get the packet they need to turn it back in, with the essay and whatever else it requires, by Sept 12? If so, how sure are you that’s the case?

here’s the requirement and instructions for semi-finalists in the 2007 program. last year, they only had a two day time period to fill out the applications and give them back to school, however that date is set by the school. then, in middle october, the school sends them out to nmsc. it does sound like everyone needs to be on top of things to be sure it’s sent in on time, however, it looks like there’s about a month between the press release and when the application is actually sent back to nmsc. scroll down to look under semi-finalist and then “click here” to find out more about requirements…

http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php</a></p>

are these the cutoffs for guaranteed semifinalist status?

Take these numbers with a grain of salt. There will be corrections along the way.

Don’t put the differential # in if the cutoff is still listed as <=, please.

I’d also love to know how you found out. My D will be happy, but I hesitate to say anything…though she could use this weekend to work on the packet. I saw the advice from another parent, but know her counselor is still sorting out schedules and such. Advice is definitely welcomed on how to finesse this.

My dd has the packet at school, but I am pretty certain that the deadline suggested for the student to complete their part was the 12th of Sept and then the prinicipal had time to do his/her part and turn it in. It did say until Sept 12th only the principal, semifinalist and family should know. It’s crazy keeping the packet from the student. Please ask counselor to open packet and read the info. and then maybe she will be confident its okay to give to student.

^ Thanks. I just spoke to the counselor and he says he hasn’t received anything yet. But he didn’t sound very certain, and I don’t have a whole lot of confidence in him.

TheF, yes, these are scores people received and who have received semifinalist notification. In some cases guidance counselors have told people what the cutoff is. (Don’t know why the NM people try to make it such a secret.) As it says, though, take it with a grain of salt just in case.

Okay I found the packet. Although the suggested date to return to principal is Sept 14th, it also says the student and family are allowed to know before the date and that they should be given the packet to complete as soon as possible!

Thanks so much for the info, proudparentof4. Don’t know if it will help me, but I will certainly try, and it may help someone else. And congratulations!

Thanks, just remember be a bug!

I can officially update LA. It was not 207 as listed, but rather 206, down a total of 3.

I can confirm that Ohio is 211 for the cut-off.

Proudparentof4, does the packet say what day the press release is, since it seems that some of us have schools waiting for the press release? Do you think from what it says in the packet we should keep trying to find out from the guidance counselor?

The press release date is Sept 12th which I believe is why the gc wants to hold on to the packet until then, but if you read further, it does not mean student, family, or principal. They are allowed to know.

The collegeboard has a list of dates on page 26 of the 2007-08 Guide to the PSAT/NMSQ (at <a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools; )

It has Aug 20 as the date the notifications were sent to principals, and it was pretty quickly after that that some people started receiving them. If they all went out within a day or two, it seems like they should have been received by now.

thank-you proudparentof4! this is so frustrating

princeofheath, I know it is, I got a call on Tuesday from the principal, but since others starting getting theirs on the 23rd Aug, I had visions of it being lost in the mail, or tossed behind something where it would not be seen with the craziness of school starting. This is a hugh deal to a lot of us, and it really can make you nuts waiting and wondering. Let us know as soon as you get it.

thanks again and i definitely will!
