Thanks, fusiondogg. Looking at your stats I’m wondering what happened that you didn’t get in. Lucky for you, it seems you have some pretty solid choices to fall back on. I don’t really know, personally, but from what I’ve heard it seems that appeals don’t always go so well. But if UVA is your definite first choice above all the others, I’d go for it…that is, if UVA allows for appeals. If not, you may be able to find that one of the other schools you’ve been accepted to are your best bets. I was determined to get into Princeton last fall and told myself I would go nowhere else. I was deferred ED in December and the decision brought me down to earth. I was able to REALLY look at the other schools that I applied to and I found that UVA was the best school for me all along. But you know better than I do which school is right for you and if you know it’s UVA, you should fight for it.

“Bump. Just wondering–should I appeal to UVA?”

It looks like you have other nice options from which to choose. In the end, it depends on what you would like to do at college. Are you more inclined towards math and science, or the social sciences? If the answer is the former, you should definitely attend Carnegie Mellon since they have better programs in those departments. However, if UVA is your first choice, by all means please go appeal.

fusiondog - sorry to hear that you were rejected. My s was waitlisted last year OOS - with top-notch stats. I think not being in the top 5% hurt him though - and probably hurt you as well. In any case, he applied to be on the waitlist, wrote letters, but no go. Not a problem though!
Looks like you have some excellent choices - congratulations on your admits to some very tough schools and the great scholarships. BTW -someone in our neighborhood was rejected at UVA and admitted at P a few years ago - LOL. UVA can be tough OOS -especially for kids from NJ and PA. Don’t sweat it.

It always bothers me to see qualified people like fusiondogg rejected. I know your pain. The fact of the matter is UVA is owned by the state of Virginia and therefore is going to admit lesser qualified Virginians.

All the more reason why UVA should be a private school in order to give OOS applicants better opportunities, and prevent certain in-state applicants, especially those in NoVA to put UVA as their ‘safety’ school.

Wannabe, I understand your position; however, many Virginians will take offense and argue with you, as you can anticipate. This year the competition has been fierce among VA candidates, and although it might be considered a “safety” school for some - this certainly is not the case for many well qualified IS students. Perhaps Dean J can expand further on this topic. Are there any statistics out there that verify that ISS are less qualified than OSS??

So why do people want to go to our schools? I guess UVA isn’t doing too badly with all the terrible Virginians they’re admitting or no one on here would have applied.

Sorry, I’m not trying to be mean, I just really don’t get it. If all the people admitted from Va are so terrible (they’re the significant majority) then why do other people want to go so badly?

because people are bitter. don’t read into it. Contrary to popular belief, the top 25% scorers on the SATs at UVa arn’t all OOSers just as the bottem 25% arn’t “dumb athletes from Virginia.”

Thanks for all the support guys. I will actually be attending NYU in Fall 07, as I really love NYC and can’t stand the traditional campus.

BTW, I meant Jay Matthews [yeah his system is bs]. My guidance counselor told me today the major reason I got rejected was for being OOS–plus, for whatever reason, they haven’t accepted any applicants from my school in the past 5 years or so.

listen you all, stop bickering over a simple concept—UVa is tough to get into, for all students…but tougher for OOS, yeah that’s right I said it!

OOS gives 11,000 applications, and IS gives only 7,000 apps. So why does the entering class at UVa compose of mostly VA people (about 60% instate, 40% out-of-state)? Because UVa restricts its OOS drastically, to rates as low as what 15% of OSS applicants get in come on it is clear that the OOS are choosing UVa over other nationally renowned colleges…let’s be frank us OOSers keep the stats really high here

a friend of mine, 17 in class, got into Yale but not Dartmouth received a letter from UVa yesterday. She received a rejection letter from them and then noticed another letter, she opened it and found a letter that said she was waitlisted. Does this make any sense? This is from her account.
