Official UW Transfer Thread 2020

I’m in the same boat as you! WA CC student who didn’t directly apply to psych major. I know some colleges are going to continue online school through Fall 2020, so I haven’t really thought about housing. I also don’t know when UW will open housing for new students, so I think it’s all up in the air. I was originally planning on living off campus at an apartment.

I’m here again and everyday now…Other universities are releasing results currently so if you applied to other u, wish you have a good luck! Let’s heading to the May and be positive!!

@Seam95 Hi! Just want to make a quick check. I also sent my transcript after talking with you and I think my winter Q transcript has already arrived at UW. Do you send email to UW to let them know you sent the transcript?

@huskyheart31 that’s awesome! I wouldn’t email them telling them you sent your winter Q grades, you could call and ask them if they received them. Did your school send them via mail? If so I would wait another 1-2 weeks for the admission team to have time to mark it as received in your file. I can only imagine they’re busy with the current events right now.

@Seam95 I sent my winter quarter transcript on Mar.30th and my college sent it by mail. What reason should I use to tell them I send my winter Q score? Just telling them that I think this transcript might be helpful as additional information for my admission decision? Thank you so much for helping!

@huskyheart31 oh yea, by now I’d say their office has probably received your transcript. You can contact them on Monday and ask if they marked it as received though. If it were me, I wouldn’t ask any of that. They would see you had an upward trend in grades and know that’s why you sent them, if they review it. But it wouldn’t hurt asking if they will and mention all that from what you said. No problem!

Do you guys know when the unofficial transcript trick started working for past transfer students?

Hey @sullengrl! From what I remember from last year’s transfer thread, the earliest notifications were sent the very end of April. Very few students were alerted then, and if I remember correctly, it was general admission and students who were placed in “pre-science” majors (chemistry, biology etc) that had good grades (3.85+) and a good essay. People who applied for Foster seemed to hear next in early May. Many applicants had to wait until mid-June. Some waited until July due to admissions delays related to the snowpocolypse that happened that winter. Good luck! I’m getting so anxious!

Thank you so much!! I just went through all of the pages of last year’s thread lol. I wonder how COVID-19 will impact decisions!

@swagmastero420 I know what you mean. At first I thought COVID wouldn’t impact it at all, but now I’m not so sure. I’m still trying to decide what I will do if its all online in the Fall.

@chicgeek9 me too :frowning: i mean we don’t even know if schools will be open in the fall. this is a crazy time

Major: Biology
GPA: 3.66
Hey guys, I applied as a CC student from California. I was wondering what my chances are in getting into UW? b/c I understand that in-state transfers get priority. UW has always been my dream school but I got rejected in high school. My sister and my cousins currently attend UW, so I’m hoping for the best and wish all of you luck as well!
Accepted: UCD
Still waiting: UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, UW
Rejected: UCI

Hi @ajajaj12! According to a list I found on reddit, the average GPA of UW students in the biology department is 3.28 +/- 0.43, so you are at the high end of the GPA of the department. Another thing that might work in your favor is COVID-19. I read somewhere that many colleges are facing plummeting enrollments and therefore looking to increase OOS and international admissions. I have no clue if UW is facing a similar situation and responding the same way, but this could be a year where OOS admittance is up a bit from prior years. Just my speculation. So, you’re at a disadvantage being OOS, but your GPA and the current pandemic could work in your favor, especially if you have a great personal statement. Just my thoughts…good luck!!!

@volcano75 hi!! where did you hear about the plummeting enrollments? that’s super interesting

@sullengrl I used to live in Minnesota and I still follow their local paper.

https://www.startribune.com/university-of-minnesota-bracing-for-300-million-hit-from-covid-19/569447062/

Hopefully the article is viewable without a paywall, but if not, it says “The U joins a growing list of public universities across the nation that are bracing for big budget hits and enrollment declines. U President Joan Gabel laid out the potential impact to the regents and shared measures the school is taking to soften the economic blow.”

and

“That scenario also forecasts notable drops in student enrollment, with the incoming freshman class and incoming transfer students each potentially decreasing by 20%, Tonneson said. Student retention rates could also be affected, with graduate student retention potentially dropping as much as 10% and international graduate student retention decreasing as much as 50%.”

I’ve seen similar things echoed on Twitter/Reddit with speculation about moves the colleges might make to bring in extra revenue, including more OOS students. But who knows. Crazy times!

I’m honestly not expecting to hear back till June so I’m just chilling for now. Idk why their notification period is so late compared to most schools

@volcano75 thank you so much for your response!! I can’t believe it’s still April. These have been the longest months ever!! I just want to know already!

@ajajaj12 Hey I’m an OOS applicant from California CC as well. My stats are similar to yours too. My second choice major was an open major so I hope that is taken into account. It’s tough for out of state but UW is my dream school and I love Seattle.

Have you guys heard of any other schools that have changed their notification periods due to COVID-19? I wonder if UW is going to differ at all

@sullengrl all i’ve seen is universities extending their enrollment acceptance date…

e.g. if it originally was june 1st now its july 1st… (western)
if not that they’re accepting enrollment acceptance deferment for individual cases like if you don’t have enough money due to being unemployed from the virus (seattle u)
