[OFFICIAL] Waiting Room

hey guys, i need your opinions! d’you think it’s better for me to go to a state school w/ full ride w/ a strong science department (its medical school is like #30 in research) and i got in the science/ tech honors program where you do research and stuff, OR go to Rice?

State school, I love rice but you have to do what’s best for you and free college is a very good thing these days unless your just loaded with money - and besides it sounds like a good school :)

@wakka: it obviously depends on your financial status. If you can afford Rice, definitely go for it.

I bluntly and mindlessly told my mom that the Rice decisions are supposed to be posted today on the 23rd…just by reading through posts from this forum… Gosh, now my mom is telling me that she very much looks forward to being waken up early in the morning by my screaming of whatever the decision is. I’m feeling guilty now- -so hoping it comes out soon.

Hey pls post ur stats my fellow to-be owls(hopefully:))

Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, Colgate, WashU, Yale, Harvard, UPenn, University of Tulsa

This is absolutely ridiculous, but I wanted to at least apply to some good schools close to where I live (since I applied to mostly east coast schools) and my mom told me to, also my favorite aunt is moving to Houston and I like to be near family. Plus, a recruiter came to my school and told me about how small it is (I LOVE small schools, hence, all the liberal arts schools I applied to) and how big they are on research (I have done 2 research projects now and I LOVE research, too!) When I visited for Vision weekend I absolutely fell in love with the school! It has pretty much surpassed everything else on my list…

THIS JUST IN!

So this is speculation, but I just heard (like, literally 2 minutes ago–I’m obsessed!!) from a friend that she was called by Rice (they left a message I believe) that decisions were supposed to come out today but due to the increase in applicants they will be coming out much closer to April 1st. Also–and I’m not sure if this is what they said or her speculations–it might be the 31st. :frowning:

So I guess we’ll just have to continue waiting…

Dang, that stinks! I hope they’ll call me too…

For what it’s worth, Rice has moved Owl Days (the spring overnight program for accepted students) back about a week from last year. Last year Owl Days were on April 8/9. This year they are on April 15/16. The announcement for this came in January so it may not be specifically related to any concern by the Admissions staff that increased applications would slow down decisions. Although it will obviously be difficult to make travel arrangements for accepted students if decisions aren’t announced until March 31 or April 1, that’s not really any shorter a period between decisions and Owl Days than last year, when decisions were announced around March 23.

Anyway, good luck to everyone. We are anxiously awaiting Rice’s decision. If Rice wants to surprise us all and release decisions before next week, it would be greatly appreciated!

I just cannot wait till we all hear back from Rice. I hope all of us get in! I am DYING to find out my admissions decision. Rice is my number 1 choice.

How is everyone handling the anxiety from waiting?

Can anyone call Rice’s admission office and ask them directly “WHEN ON EARTH DO DECISIONS COME OUT”

I would if there were a way to call totally anonymously…
Otherwise, I think the only people who would be willing to do it would be people who have already been accepted or rejected. It seems like a bad idea to annoy the people who decide your fate while they’re completing their final review of your application.
I wish they would just release an official date like other schools! It’s so stressful!

Anybody wanna payphone this thing?

All I want to do is keep checking and checking. My biggest fear is that I’m going to get on and it will notify me that I’m rejected. I keep imagining myself going to Rice, yet theres a big possible chance I won’t get accepted at all. I just need to know!!!

i called them yesterday… and they said that stupid phrase again…“All decisions will be posted on Esther System BY April 1st”… when i asked whether they would be in batches and since im international i will have to wait longer… she said no… they all come out together… so :(

I called from my work phone, which I’ve never told them. Surprise! They said “it will go out on April first”. I asked if it would be email, snail mail, or esther, and the answer was “all three”.

Feel better now?

No, neither do we.

If it helps anyone to know, last year the email hit right at 6:00pm central time and the title on the email was congratulatory.

No one should expect the Admissions officers to say anything other than April 1. Even if it turns out not to be true, they have the advantage that if decisions come out earlier, absolutely no one will complain. ;)

All this waiting and competition has been very tough on the kids in this class and their parents, no doubt. It’s just a natural consequence, unfortunately, of the fact that we are at the peak of the Baby Boom population echo in the US, and the fact that so many international students are interested in a US college education. In our case our son has an acceptance in hand from our state flagship public, as well as acceptances with scholarships from some very good private universities. So if he doesn’t gain admittance to Rice or we decide we just can’t afford it, we’ll move on, disappointed though we might be. I hope the rest of you all have other good options as well. Good luck.

They’re done with the decision process by now. Just finalizing administrative details.

If they want letters to arrive in the CONUS by April 1 they need to mail them by March 29 which means they need to be printed and stuffed no later than March 26. I realize that’s no comfort to anyone waiting, but in reality, they’re done with the decision making process and probably have been for a solid week. So, short of getting arrested, failing a course, or forming a committee for a full pardon for Albert T. Patrick, you can’t screw this up, certainly not just because a clerk recognizes your number on the caller ID.

While I agree that there’s no need to be paranoid about contacting the admissions office, I doubt your premise that they must be done with decisions by now because they need to mail them so that they’ll arrive anywhere in the 48 states by April 1. I don’t think there is any such commitment or intention by Rice or by the other “4/1” colleges. It’s a wired world, and they only need to send e-mails or open the web portal on the appointed day (whatever it is). The snail mail will get there when it gets there.
