Housing question:
If my son decides on OSU, he would prefer honors housing in Taylor Tower due to AC and location over the other 2 honors dorms. I am assuming he can only get a quad as a 1st year, but double would obviously be better.
He probably won’t get final decision from Purdue until March 30. And who knows when we get final offers of merit scholarships from other places.
When should we pay deposit to get in line for housing contract? I know it’s non refundable, and I could walk away from $100 if he is getting a better offer at another university. What should we consider?

I think a quad sounds fine - more people to potentially meet

Don’t you need to accept admission to put down a housing deposit?

You can’t select a dorm as an incoming freshman. Housing picks your dorm for you. You can not get a housing contract until after you commit to OSU. There is no advantage to committing early since you will then need to turn a housing contract in earlier. Housing contracts are sent out in order of commits. But if you are waiting for other admissions that deadline (two weeks after you receive the housing contract) could arrive before other decisions are out (since they roll out starting in March).

Again, even if you are first in line for housing, you can’t pick your dorm, it is assigned. And if you are last in line, they will find housing for you as long as you have met their deadlines.

I think you can put preferences tho like north or south campus

Yes, you put in preferences and housing does its best.

If I understand correctly, there’s a honors dorm in north, south and west campus. So if you list North rate 1 on housing application that will likely result in Taylor until they run out of room there. It seems like Bradley on south is the smallest capacity but without ac. I don’t know how to guess which ones would fill faster. Or are you saying that sometimes, honors students do not get into the honors cluster housing?

I am saying you sign the contract with preferences, not with a building assignment.

Since you are aiming for Taylor you would enter preference for North and Rate I but you may or may not get it and won’t know until July when they send out assignments.

Lack of AC is not that big of a deal. They usually have access to some common areas that are cooled and students draw their curtains shut during the day to keep the sun out of their room and open a window at night to cool it during the first couple of weeks. My S lived in Bradley (S honors dorm) and lack of AC those first two weeks actually kept my son out of his room and getting to know people on campus. Having the dining hall nearby in winter was great. And the Kuhn House honors and scholars center was right across the street. He actually chose a dorm his second year that also didn’t have AC for its great location, too.

I haven’t heard of students wanting in an honors cluster but unable to get it. My guess is fewer students preference W and there would always be a way to cluster honors students there if needed.

Hi!

Doe anyone know if RD students are also considered for Merit? Every scholarship says “automatically considered if applying by 11/1 EA deadline” but wondering if RD kids are still considered?

We just received the Buckeye Scholarship. DD, OOS and no test score submitted. 3.93 gpa and nice extracurriculars. By regular USPS mail.

We asked this question during a virtual admissions call and were told no. So curious if anyone in RD that is accepted does in fact receive one (ie, Buckeye).

Thanks for that info!
That’s such a bummer! OSU was a last minute add on for us- because we didn’t know they had a program that my son was interested in until December. Annoying to be penalized like that! :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

Anyone have housing preference recommendations? Vibe between north and south campus?

Oh, we will ask the question again on merit. Just to be 100% and determine if there isn’t another process, such as needing to apply for aid (vs automatic review) to be considered. This may be more out of hope/crossing fingers than anything but will give it a shot.

Will OOS students who applied to OSU after Nov 1 be considered? My son applied and was accepted regular decision. We didn’t know about the Buckeye Scholarship. My son didn’t have his essay completed until December. That was the only reason he didn’t apply earlier. Update: I see someone else asked the same question above. This is disappointing.

At most schools the point of early action is to be considered for scholarships.
