I did email admissions for a deferred status for my daughter and her is the response I got
Hello A… and P…,
Thank you for contacting Undergraduate Admissions. First, I want to assure you that receiving a deferral decision is by no means a bad thing. We liked what we saw in XXX application, and we want to review everything a second time in the context of the rest of our applicant pool before making a final decision. Each application we receive undergoes a rigorous holistic review process, and our decisions are never based on one single factor. While I am unable to compare one applicant to another, I do want to share some of last year’s admitted class statistics to display how competitive Ohio State continues to get each year.
Last year, 50% of admitted students who submitted the ACT scored between a 28 and 33, and 50% of admitted students who submitted the SAT scored between 1340 and 1480. Additionally, 98% of admitted students ranked in the top quarter of their high school class, and 72% of admitted students ranked in the top 10% of their high school class. I share these statistics to demonstrate that a student’s decision, such as XXXX deferral, does not necessarily reflect the student’s academic potential, but rather the competitiveness of our current year’s applicant pool.
XXXX is not required to submit any additional application materials alongside her deferral decision. If she wants, she is welcome to submit a midyear transcript or any supplemental application materials, and they will be reviewed when her application is reviewed a second time around. However, applicants are not required to submit more materials and will not be at a disadvantage if they do not.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jacob Strang The Ohio State University

My son got deferred 2 years ago (on the Jan date). Almost everyone did!!! Regular decision applicants are NOT sending their senior grades (or 7th semester). They have SO many applicants-it’s not personal. He ended up hearing on 3/25 and getting waitlisted. Fortunately in the time from his deferral, he was able to visit another school and knew that was the place for him. He was initially devastated not to get in to OSU and now fully admits it was not where he was supposed to be. Best of luck-it’s not an easy road to navigate. Things have a way of working out the way they are supposed to, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time.
Thanks for the update.
MY daughter is already admitted to Cinci, Kentucky , Tennessee and other schools so it is not a show stopper but since one got into OSU business I was hoping both can go to OSU and that might still happen but if it does not then it is not the end of road. These things have a way of working out and maybe OSU was not the right place for either of them. Only time will tell…
My biggest pet peeve right now is my daughter who got deferred is in the top 15% has a lot of extracurriculars. The only thing that probably went against her is her ACT score. ION grand scheme of things I am in Ohio and have been paying Ohio taxes for the last 25 years and then an OOS applicant with similar academics gets preference sounds unfair.
Doe anyone know if those who got differed EA will be in the 2/16 RD round or is that random too? Also, has anyone been rejected through EA or all deferrals?
As a California resident I feel your pain as I watch my son “forced” to apply OOS for a quality education due to our state’s deficit incentivise UC and CAL State schools to accept a higher quantity of “full sticker” payees… 10-15% acceptance rates for state schools are what we are up against here… half that for the USC/UCLA lottery ticket that we all play…
To make it worse, I’m a MIL retiree , and in CA we have a benefit called CAL VET… meaning FREE UC tuition … but the acceptance rates are a nightmare. GA and ?TX have mandates that ensure 80% of enrolled (not just admitted I think) students are state residents… that’s an aggressive plan and one that would not work nation wide…but somewhere in the middle perhaps… anything better than the “as is”…
I totally get it–my son had SAT scores over 1300 and our college advisor had us submit them. Other kids from his high school with lower GPAs went TO and got in. There was no rhyme or reason. Had he gotten in, he would not be at the school he is at absolutely THRIVING! It was barely on his radar when he applied and now he couldn’t imagine himself anywhere else.
I agree, I think it was likely the scores that caused my son to be deferred. His were over 1300 too but just slightly lower than what they are now posting (but in the middle 50 of the previous year). Classmates that went TO were admitted with slightly lower GPA and rigor. I know it’s holistic but both had a wide variety of extra curriculars with leadership. I know it’s not over yet, but I feel bad for advising him incorrectly on this one.
There was no way to know. The kids from our area all got in on the Dec date (class of 22) and EVERYONE got deferred in Jan. We had an honest chat that he did not like, but helped him open his mind to other opportunities.
All the money that goes to supporting other things in other countries can be used to make college more affordable for everybody here at home. Not getting into politics or anything but i just do not understand that a country like US has nothing vested in the kids (the future) of their country.
Any one applied EA, has not yet heard any decision? My daughter’s portal still says “Evaluation”. Worried if something is wrong with her app. Please share if you have any insights
make sure everything was submitted on time. Could test scores maybe have been sent in late or something? If everything looks normal send admissions an email.
