Olympics 2018

NBC completely botched the skating Gala. The awesome K pop tributes? Nope. Javi? No-no-no! The hilarious Uzbeki skater? Nada. Aargh. YouTubing them now. Also, the gold medal hockey game? Had to rely on Twitter for real time updates.

@thumper1 They has a handful of the men on the 1960 team back in Squaw Valley, had a round table discussion, lots of footage of the games and photos.

@BunsenBurner They want you to pay for some coverage. NBCSN has the gold medal men’s hockey game on. I’ve spent a lot of time flipping back & forth between NBC & NBCSN.

The entire gala is on their web site replays. It is 2.5 hrs long. The hockey game was on NBCSN. Fell asleep before the end though.

We tried…and tried to log into the other channel. We had a lot in code for our “devices” and we just tried and tried…every time got a message “try another code”.WTH?

We finally gave up. And DH is an engineer…he could not get past this!

Most of it will be online next week. Which is fine with me…because some of the things I wanted to watch the most wer on at midnight!

You just can’t see the Diggins XC finish too many times!! I still don’t know how she did that!

To be fair NBC has the entire gala on their website. But am surprised that they left out that stuff. I love it when they skate with a sense of humor.

I know that is kind of a rhetorical question, but really — she started skiing as soon as she could walk, and trained her butt off since about 7th grade. Skied in US Juniors, then joined the US team on the World Cup circuit. This has been a long, gradual climb for her.

The Norwegian team invited her to come train with them for a week a year or two ago. She talked about it on her blog, and it sounded eye opening. Both learning some new training techniques, and also how much financial & logistical support they get (I believe, for example, they have a chef preparing healthy meals for them all year. I think even during World Cup, our team is cooking for themselves). Now our team has fun staying in housing together on the road and cooking as a group. But still — it is that type of support that gives the other countries an edge. We didn’t even have a wax truck until this year.

They are on the road a lot, too. They train as a group for a lot of the year, even in the warmer months. They go to Alaska, Vermont, and New Zealand, for example.

Agree about Diggins. I also loved the men’s 50km .

I felt so sad watched no the repercussion to the 2 Olympic winners who held their black glove hand in the air, and how the wife of one committed suicide. All in comparison to George foreman. Just sad

So now to the happy, praising the winners of this year Olympics. Happy to see a spot of my little cousin.

What?

@bookworm - There were repercussions; they were expelled from the games. Ironically, Avery Brundage, the head of the IOC, strongly objected to the protest and forced their expulsion, but had raised no objection to the nazi salutes at the 1936 Berlin games.

Although I was only 11 years old at the time I was a huge sports fan and remember it vividly. At the time, as now, I considered it an act of courage.

So did I, but I didn’t realize these men would then live in poverty.

@bookworm - I’m curious why their merely being expelled from the Games saddened you. What do you feel would have been appropriate “repercussions”?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Olympics_Black_Power_salute Just saw this was already posted. Not sure exactly what you mean @bookworm about “these men would then live in poverty.”

I need to do more reading. In the TV clip, that is what was said. They didn’t get any endorsements, and had to struggle to feed their children. One man spoke of George Forman writing him a letter, and offering aid. I have no idea what jobs they took or why they were so poor.

I’m tuned in for the closing ceremonies, but they are showing hockey summary replays…

@bookworm , They won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 2008. Carlos has been a high school track and field coach and high school counselor. Smith has been a public speaker. They may not have gotten endorsements, but they have been acknowledged for their actions. Most people making a statement don’t do it for the money.

How much luggage do you think Tara and Johnny brought to South Korea?
