I liked Brazil’s dresses and hats.
Most of my favorite uniforms were from Africa.
Loved seeing the Refugee Team come in to a standing ovation.
Finally have a tv to watch. Turned it on to see Gisele.
Am I the only one bothered by the announcers referring to her as an “export”?
Cool cauldron.
I liked the opening ceremony. It was unassuming but warm and fun.
I miss the days when the athletes and the judges took the Olympic oath during the opening ceremony.
I cried when they introduced the Refugee team. I cried during the climate change video and even Mr R shed a few tears.
It took me way too long to figure out that my Spanish hadn’t gone to crap… Brazil speaks Portuguese… lol
They took it tonight. It’s just that NBC in its wisdom decided we didn’t want to see it. I like that part of the opening ceremony too.
I really enjoyed the Opening Ceremonies and thought Brazil did a great job with the budget they had. As others, we had fun picking out which outfits we liked the best. Our preference were for the snazzier ones (African, Caribbean in general). We didn’t like any that reminded us of the concierge at a hotel.
My annoyance was with NBC. I wish they didn’t have coverage of the Olympics. As with other years, they couldn’t be bothered to show the ceremonies LIVE and then stuck oodles of commercials in, etc. We had it on in the background, more or less to scoff and be disgusted while we used Tunnel Bear to watch CBC’s coverage from Canada. They still tossed in a few commercials (not as many as NBC, though we’ll probably stick with BBC another time), but at least they showed it LIVE.
I had hoped with NBC claiming they were livestreaming everything this year that the “live” part would have meaning. Instead, they opted for delaystreaming - as usual for them. Quite the annoyance here. Folks can opt for delayed if they want it online. We prefer LIVE and enjoying it when the rest of the world does.
I gave NBC a chance this year. Now I’m done with them. For two+ weeks I’m either Canadian or British.
I fell asleep during that very odd opening…that Gisele catwalk thing was really bizarre. She literally just walked across the stage.
I also fell asleep. Sad that Pele was too ill to attend.
I understand that the athletes had to fly to Rio, but that doesn’t justify having so many teams march in the opening ceremony dressed like flight attendants.
I fell asleep, too.
It was tape delayed, and they still couldn’t manage to wait for a commercial break until after the entire US team had marched out? They kept showing the same athletes over and over again, and Matt & Meredith didn’t know who half of them were. Sorry, it’s nice that you had info about all the interesting other countries, but knowing our own athletes is your job too. Boo, NBC.
It amazes me the number of people that don’t know that. ![]()
I tuned in late and turned it off after awhile. I agree with NinaReilly that they did a disservice to the US team by going to commercial and not even knowing who the athletes were.
Earlier, I got tired of how many times they showed Gisele dancing in the crowd.
“Gisele catwalk thing was really bizarre. She literally just walked across the stage.”
It did seem a little silly but it was in conjunction with the song The Girl From Ipanema:
"Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she passes, each one she passes goes “ah”
When she walks, she’s like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle that
When she passes, each one she passes goes"
I guess she embodies that.
Romany, thanks for that link in #19. The uniforms are fun to look at and the catty descriptions had me laughing out loud.
The other trend that I noticed was as we look back farther and farther in time, how much smaller our delegation gets and how much more male it gets.
Lol romani, we had to Google the language.
@skieurope I do know that… it just wasn’t foremost on my brain when I was watching at 3 AM.
