Oscars 2018 Discussion

I didn’t care for Lady Bird or Get Out. The Post and Three Billboards are on my radar once football ends (Sunday is my movie day).

I’ve only seen Get Out, lol. I was scared away by it being described as a horror movie but it isn’t like that. Well worth it but not the typical Oscar movie for many reasons.

I tried to watch Mudbound on Netflix. It got a best cinematography nod and it is the first time a woman was nominated in that category. I only watched about 45 minutes before I gave up. It was well done, but depressing.

I don’t go to movies with any violence so usually don’t see most of the Oscar nominees. I was sorry to see that Hong Chau wasn’t nominated.

Lady Bird would be a good one for you to see, @Wellspring. No violence.

Shape of Water just doesn’t sound that interesting to me. I hope someone who has seen it can comment why its so good. I don’t see any really good movies besides Last Jedi out there now.

In our quest to see all the best picture nominees before the Oscar awards night, we went to see The Post today. Good movie but did not wow us. I think more effort was made on interesting camera angles and other cinematographic creativity than character development and the strength of the script and dialogue. I also felt some scenes were a bit contrived and manipulated responses or emotions. Nowhere near as good as Spotlight as a investigative journalism movie, in my book. Again, good movie, worth watching, but won’t be my pick for the best movie of the year.

@doschicos, I agree with you. I loved Spotlight. I liked The Post.

Spotlight was extremely moving. I saw it on the plane and it really moved me. Those folks worked very hard and took big risks. Katharine and the Post worked hard and took risks as well, but it wasn’t nearly as prolonged a search as Spotlight.

And the character development and acting in Spotlight was superior to me, right down to the tiniest role. Plus the pacing and unwinding of the story. I knew what happened but I found the story gripping nonetheless. It really deserved its win 2 years ago.

After all the Weinstein + friends stuff I can’t stomach paying for movies anymore. We have free Tuesdays as part of our art-house movie membership, so that’s were we’ve been going. I, Tonya was just awesome.

I, Tonya was discussed at my Bookclub tonight. People wondered if the real Tonya made money from this movie, and if redemption was the goal of the screenwriter.

Tonya Harding reportedly received $1500 upfront but I think there was also a promise to pay her something more if/when the movie turned a profit.

@doschicos, I completely agree with you, I also loved Spotlight.

The only 2018 Oscar nominated movie I have seen so far is Lady Bird (I’ll try to see most of those nominated at some point); I saw it with my college-aged daughter over her winter break, thought it was a great movie, and the mother-daughter time together was priceless.

@ourtown Lady Bird is my favorite of the nominate films I’ve seen thus far.

@doschicos, Same :wink:

I have tickets to see “The Shape of Water” this weekend. I love Guillermo del Torro movies, but it will take a lot to knock “Lady Bird” from its position as “My Favorite Movie of 2018.”

That’s what I read as well.

What did the actual victim-Nancy Kerrigan-get? Yeah, thought so.

I believe that Nancy Kerrigan got $0 (and revictimized)

I suppose it deserves another thread, but I’m uncomfortable with the whole “Tonya deserves an apology” movement.
