I almost didn’t see Get Out because it was supposedly a “horror” movie, and I hate them, but S told me I had to. Glad I did. It definitely isn’t a conventional horror movie!
Here are my picks based on who I think should win not who I think will win:
I haven’t seen Call Me By Your Name, Shape of Water, or Phantom Thread.
Best Picture - This is tough because I don’t think any of the contenders I’ve seen are as good as some recent winners like Spotlight or Manchester by the Sea. I’m going to pick Three Billboards but would also be happy if Lady Bird, Get Out, or Dunkirk won.
Best Actor - Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Best Supporting Actor - Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards
Best Actress - Frances McDormand, Three Billboards
Best Supporting Actress - Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Best Animated Feature Film - Coco
Cinematography - Darkest Hour, Dunkirk a close second
Costume Design - Victoria & Abdul
Directing - Dunkirk
Film Editing - Baby Driver
Makeup and Hairstyling - Darkest Hour
Music, Original Score - Dunkirk
Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Awards in general should go to either Dunkirk or Baby Driver
Writing, Original Screenplay - Lady Bird
What do you pick?
I’m only in it for the fashion. None of my favorites ever win, so.
PSA:
To the posters who always show up the next morning saying the Oscars were boring and inappropriately focused on politics and social issues when they should shut up and talk about which designer they are wearing:
There are going to be speeches which touch on social issues and politics.
Lather, rinse, and repeat. Watch at your peril.
I not enough of a film buff to make knowledgeable guesses, but I have seen all of the nominated films except two (Phantom Thread and Call Me ByName). I saw The Shape of Water on Friday night and while I’m not a fan of fantasy/sci fi or anything in that genre, I thought Sally Hawkins was amazing and think she might be a strong contender for best actress. Richard Jenkins (also in Shape of Water) is a strong contender for Best Supporting Actor. For me, they were the highlights of this film along with the musical score by Alexandre Desplat. I hope he wins for best original movie score.
I loved Lady Bird and Greta Gerwig is immensely talented, but in my mind, the best original screenplay is Jordan Peele (Get Out).
I really enjoyed Victoria and Abdul and hopes it wins something.
I also hope Abucus wins because it highlights that racism vs Asians is alive and thriving in the US.
I think for cinematography, The Shape of Water would be a strong contender.
Like Bromfield2, I’ve seen all best picture nominees except Phantom Thread and Call My by Your Name. So here are my picks of the nominees:
Best Picture: Get Out
Best Actor: Gary Oldman
Best Actress: Sally Hawkins
Best Director: Any of them
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer or Woody Harrelson
Best Supporting Actress: Quite the group, but edge to Allison Janney
Best Original Screenplay: Get Out
Best Adapted Screenplay: No opinion, didn’t see any of the nominees
I watched Call Me By Your Name last night and ran out to see Phantom Thread this morning so I’d be caught up. I really did not like Phantom Thread for much of the middle (another movie about an emotionally unavailable guy who thinks he’s too good for manners because he’s wealthy/powerful and women should be lucky he gives them the time of day, cool) until I saw where they were going with it and now I’m rooting for it. Also rooting for The Shape of Water. Of all the movies, it’s really stuck with me. I cried a lot at the end and I keep going back to the amazing visuals of it. But I also loved Lady Bird and Get Out. Aaargh. This is an amazing year. There are so many strong contenders - worst case scenario for me would be Three Billboards sweeping, because it’s the only one I haven’t seen.
Just finished Lady Bird, I enjoyed it, but didn’t think it was best picture material. So far my favorites are Get Out and The Shape of Water. I loved The Post, but Meryl Streep certainly doesn’t need another Oscar! (And it really was her movie.)
These are my picks for the winners in the categories I pay any attention to.
Best Picture - Three Billboards
Best Actor - Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Best Supporting Actor - William Dafoe, The Florida Project
Best Actress - Frances McDormand, Three Billboards
Best Supporting Actress - Allison Janey, I, Tonya
Directing - Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Writing, Original Screenplay - Get Out
Short Film, Live Action - The Silent Child
Short Film, Animated - I don’t know…sadly, none of them stuck out for me this year.
I read that Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty will be the presenters for Best Picture again.
That’s the perfect way to present this year’s Best Picture award. Last year’s goof is going to come up whomever makes the presentation.
It’s nice to give them a redo as it really wasn’t their fault.
Rented Darkest Hour today, I really enjoyed it and saw how great Gary Oldman was
Also rented Dunkirk, it didn’t keep my interest.
Need to correct my earlier post. Faye and Warren are doing a do-over for last year’s Best Picture.

How about Rita Moreno wearing her Oscar dress from 1962? My night is made.
I just heard that she’s 86 years old!
Rita looks great as does her outfit.
fwiw, I saw the Oscar nominated short documentaries yesterday (total of 3 hours!)…some excellent ones…most of which are now on Netflix or Amazon Prime. My Fave: Knife Skills. Also very good was Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405 and Heroin(e).
So far the worst dressed for me has to be Salma Hayek, with Whoopi Goldberg a close second.
