Oscars 2024 Chat

I thought it was entertaining. Loved the John Cena bit. Thought Kimmel did a nice job. Billie Eilish was wonderful.
Ariana Grande looked like she was carrying her bedding.
Jodi Foster looked lovely. So many beautiful dresses.
Unpopular opinion I’m sure, but Robert Downey Jr annoys me.

I found the In Memoriam section to be really weird. The dancing was a very odd choice-it was distracting, and I hated that the screen was so hard to see. People always complain about people who are left out, but even apart from that, it was poorly done imo.

And Al Pacino-what the heck?

As soon as I heard who was the last presenter I was like “Why? This can’t go well”. He was absolutely the wrong choice. Such a letdown for the end of the awards. He managed to tarnish a once in a lifetime moment. Seriously, who made this decision?

Was that Al Pacino? I didn’t stay up to the end.

Yes - it was a real shame.

I’ve never found Jimmy Kimmel funny; him making fun of RDJ’s addiction at the beginning of the show was low, RDJ’s face said it all. I don’t get the tasteless roast type “jokes” at an awards ceremony. Did he think he was appealing to genz. DD was on discord with film club/film study university students across US and the “jokes” didn’t land well with them either.

I feel like they always do roast-type jokes in the monologue. Some land, some don’t. But for me, the Billy Crystal hosting years were the best and have yet to be equaled by anyone.

Agree about Billy Crystal. The one where he is rolled out in a straight jacket, wearing the Hannibal Lector mask stands out in my memory, along with alot of the funny film montages where he is placed into the scenes after the fact. Posing naked while Leo DiCaprio draws him a la Titanic, etc. Classics.

Didn’t see it all, but I did see Emily Blunt present and her dress was so stiff and weird. Like a bejeweled back brace with a life of its own.

Thanks for the link. All 3 of my grandkids take violin lessons and the 2 older ones participate in a youth orchestra program (which has many levels.) It’s expensive!

I appreciate the love letter to the power of music and music education. :purple_heart:

Thanks for sharing those pix, Marilyn! Some really lovely, elegant gowns and fun looks on the guys!

Have to say my fav look was Rita Moreno!

I’d wear America Ferrara’s dress if I could only carry it off!

Zendaya’s dress was stunning fabric but something about the balance between the bodice and hips looked…unbalanced to me.

I’m not a peplum fan so that ruled out a number of otherwise lovely dresses.

Apparently the floating shoulder is now a thing:

Yeah, I didn’t get that floating shoulder thing. Why? It just looks like the fit is wrong to me.

Just wanted to throw in this article about the making of the “I’m Just Ken” number. So fun!

I especially enjoyed seeing previous category winners congratulating and announcing the current category nominees.

And the Osage drum circle truly had me in goosebumps! Exquisite.

Overall I thought Jimmy Kimmel did a fine job. A few misses, but that’s to be expected.

I loved that no one was truly played off. This is their moment - they’ve earned the time.

Fashion was perfect. Even the few that I didn’t understand.

I’ve also made a list of films and shorts I want to watch.

I agree! Maybe, just maybe one little joke. But he kept going on and on. I was uncomfortable for RDJ.

I thought he was ok, not necessarily that funny. I started watching Poor Things last night not knowing a thing about. I typically don’t like weird movies, but we found ourselves enjoying it actually. We were down to the last 30 minutes and had to get some sleep, so will finish it tonight.

I bring this movie up because a lip reader caught Emma Stone telling her husband Jimmy was a pr*ck after Jimmy made a crack about the movie. They showed a few clips of it and he said something like that’s all the clips they could show. I thought it was a benign and true funny comment after watching it last night. I don’t think the comment warranted being called a name by her. It’s true! Even DH said he was surprised that she would make that movie.

I think the group that played were Osage. I found out yesterday that until 1978 that sort of performance was illegal; a law was passed then to allow Native religious practices:

The animation winners were played off while they were trying to dedicate their award to a colleague who had died. I don’t understand why the Academy doesn’t offer a translator for nominees who speak English only as a second or third language — can you imagine how excited and gobsmacked you are but you are trying to not speak in your best language? Seems unnecessary to me
