Our responsibility as parents

Why do you guys think suicide rate for non-Hispanic Whites is so high? It’s nearly double that of Asians. What are Asians doing right that non-Hispanic Whites are not? Suicide is a serious issue, and we should be concerned I think.

So you are saying the title of the CDC’s table “Leading Causes of Death by Age Group, Asian or Pacific Islander Females-United States, 2006*” is incorrect?

Not really. It is the lowest of all ethnic groups. Would I like it to be 0? Sure, but 6 out of 100,000 suicides is not bad. Compare the numbers for non-Hispanic Whites. It is 11 out of 100,000. If anything I am concerned about non-Hispanic Whites.

Those numbers are probably not statistically significantly different.

Again- strongly suspect, SES, education, access to healthcare, etc are significant variables.

Not at all. I will try to explain it to you one more time. Let’s say there are two neighborhoods with the same number of houses. In one, there are 20 robberies each year, and 2 deaths during the robberies. In the other, there is 5 robberies each year, and 1 death from the robberies. You are worried about the safety and security of the two neighborhoods. Which one do you think is more dangerous?

Now, let’s draw an analogy between that and the CDC data vs. the NIH data. The CDC data is reporting the death per robbery. That is higher for the second neighborhood. The NIH data is reporting the death per house. That is higher for the first neighborhood. Which number do you think you should use to determine which neighborhood is safer? Remember, they both have the same number of houses.

Please don’t take this as an insult, I am genuinely curious. Do you have a statistics background?

Bingo! Hence lowering the Asian number form 6 per 100,000 to 1 per 100,000 would not be statistically significant either. The rate is super low already.

However, and this is important, the rate is going up. Why is that? The answer is very simple - assimilation. Once Asians become like Caucasians, socioculturally speaking, the vital statistics will match as well. That’s called regression to the mean.

Enough of the condescending tone. I reported the CDCs leading cause of death by age/population. Thats what is relevant. Already identified that your issue was with the word “rate”. Is someone a little stuck?

Nonsense. Regression to the mean is a naturally occurring phenomenon. Has nothing to do with assimilation.

Sorry- have work to do. Can’t play anymore right now. Time to sign onto someone elses dancecard.

Yoohoo…poster from post #272…where are you???

Thumper, you want me to take on POIH?

Come out, POIH! We have a show to put up. People are waiting.

I’ve no problem with personal choice of eating habits of any sort or preference of one type of meat over the other.

The problem I’ve with people who refuse to eat what they eat at their home just because

 • It was cooked in a kitchen that has meat cooked in it
 • It was cooked in a kitchen that has cooked meat cut in a different form
 • It was cooked by a person that had cooked meat
 • It was cooked by a person who is not from their community

That’s insane, if the STEM major can’t understand that a veg BBQ of organic vegetables at his/her home is going to be same as some else home then I’ll prefer a Liberal Arts major who understand that.

So education is not same as getting a degree, it’s opening up one’s mind to see things in perspective. If the mind is numbed by some ‘written’ material left by some people ages ago then all bets are off.

When some one teaches physics or any other science then they prove each concept with a practical. Students can see for sure that it does happen. Religious teaching from parent should include a practical too.

My heart is broken.

What can I say POIH? I am an atheist. And I eat red meat. Will go anywhere for a good steak. And I am a STEM major who took some humanities courses, but was often hung over or high during those classes and exams.

There is NOTHING in these studies or anywhere else that can pinpoint causes…sorry…not there. Nice try.

IP…what you are saying is that if folks assimilate, their suicide rate will go up. I can’t see how you can make this JUMP…and it is one.

But really, believe what you want to believe.

Thumper, if one group becomes more like another group socioculturally, and the second group has a higher suicide rate, I have trouble believing that the suicide rate of the first group will remain unchanged. This is especially true if the first group is very small compared to the second, and hence is in no position to pull down the suicide rate of the second group by changing the sociocultural norms of the second group. There is no way Asians can influence Caucasians to become more like Asians, with lower suicide rates. It is much more likely that Caucasians will influence Asians to become more like Caucasians, with higher suicide rates.

And this is not just about suicide rates. As Asians assimilate, I fully expect the education level and incomes to drop, divorce rates to rise, so on and so forth.

[Ethnic Differences in Adolescent Suicide in the United States](Ethnic Differences in Adolescent Suicide in the United States - PMC)
It’s from NIH.

I held off, but I feel it’s valid to link it. The subsection on Asian Americans posits some ideas about “why.”
You can just jump to that section.
Note the mentions of acculturation (and its impact) and parent-child conflict.
This doesn’t change my opinion that OP is ■■■■■■■■ for a chance to argue.

OH PLEASE…IP

In Florida, the percentage of Hispanic babies born is very high. In Florida, the number of Jewish deaths is high. Using your convoluted logic, you would conclude that there were a large number of Hispanic folks who were Jewish. You don’t take into account independent variables that affect the statistics on one end or the other of this.

Totally agree.

And now back to the topic of the THREAD…if you can do that.

I can understand Group 1 assimilating the mores of Group 2 if those mores are beneficial - perceived or otherwise - to Group 1.
It’s quite a leap to assume that suicide is in any way beneficial to any individual in a group.
Doesn’t your original premise assume that the racial majority in the US will not benefit from their current modes of behavior anyway?

Don’t look at suicide as a direct more getting picked up. It will be an effect. For example, let’s say the tightly knit Asian family unit goes the way 8 tracks went, and parents don’t engage with the kids any more and instead let the kids sink or swim (the laissez faire style of parenting). That for sure will increase isolation and suicides. Let’s also say the penchant for education goes, and along with it the higher SES. That will be another contributing factor.

Great article. It shows that teen suicide is a problem primarily among Caucasians. Shouldn’t we discuss that in this forum instead of trying to prove that the low level of Asian american suicide rates prove that Asian parenting is not working?
