Parents of HS Class of 2025 3.0-3.4 GPA (or less)

(genuinely thought it was in the wrong spot as I thought it was for the real results thread. no drama intended).

Adding a results post for my S25. He started the process with a 3.3uw/3.6w GPA. He had a 3.7 junior year and a 4.0 first half of senior year, but never cracked 3.6 overall. I may have posted a similar, preliminary list in the 3.5-3.8 group. He applied TO everywhere. He has very strong EC with leadership, and his essays focused on coming out as trans with no male role model. This inspired him to support others and assume leadership roles to make safe spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community. Six AP classes with no scores submitted, but recommendations were from his AP Bio and AP Gov teachers. Included an art portfolio wherever it was allowed. His major is political science/government, public policy, or in the case of Emerson, political communication. I think what helped him overall was a strong story that ran through his essays, ECs, and recs. Three schools gave him enough merit and FA combined that full tuition is covered (Muhlenberg, Trinity College, Conn College). Some came very close to that (Clark, Bard, Union, Pitt.)

When we started this process and he first did a Chance Me post, he received a few responses that he would only be accepted to his lowest safety. Because he needed significant financial aid, he (and I) were nervous, so he applied to A LOT of schools. Hopefully, adding which schools gave merit and FA will be helpful for others. We are very close to a final decision, but it will likely be Conn College for the win with tuition covered!

I’m so proud of him! That sounds super weird since I don’t know you or him, but hopefully you know what I mean. He worked hard to craft a good list of schools that felt right for him and that offered the financial backing you all needed and has so many great choices in the end. Woo hoo! Go all of you!

D25 has had a late change of mind about what she wants to do next year. Had thought she would take something of a gap year with living at home while working + attending our local community college part time. But now she is thinking she wants ā€œthe real college experienceā€ after all and is considering 2 regional publics in our area. I think both could be a good fit. Both are a nice size (5,000-7,000 undergrads.) Both have strong programs in her main area of interest (art/design, with teaching license pathway) as well as other areas (e.g. both have supportive, project-based engineering programs with good ties to local industry, not that D25 is interested in engineering, but it’s nice to see quality programs in multiple fields.)

One she is already accepted to (automatic admissions though a state program), the other is in an adjoining state but has easy rolling admissions and takes application up to Aug 1. We shall see!

We are down to about 3 weeks before move in. My living room is full of dorm items. She met her roommate once in person and she feels they will be a good fit. D25 has roomed with 3 others during plenty of dance camps and knows you dont have to be best friends with everyone, you just need to be polite and respectful. It would be great if they turn out to be close friends but I think going into it with lower expectations so to speak is good.

Her dorm layout is pretty decent so I am excited for her! Fingers crossed for an amazing year!

(meanwhile S23 has no clue what size his bed is in the frat house he is moving into so has absolutely nothing bought. Such a procrastinator!)

I think this is the perfect way to look at future roommate preparation. Yes, it would be lovely if they end up close friends. But nice and respectful is key. I’ll admit, for us, I’m selfishly hoping they end up good friends because roommate is from only about an hour away - we aren’t going to be able to bring S25 home for Thanksgiving, so I’m hoping he gets along with roommate and gets invited to join him.

Looks like my introvert S25 was matched with an equally introvert roommate, and they are both waiting for the OTHER to initiate the conversation/contact

In the summer of his Sophomore year, he spent 6 weeks in an athletic camp out of state, rooming with 3 random boys (4 to a dorm room was quite tight!) So at least he has some experience, in addition to all the travel meets he has been doing from an early age, sharing hotel rooms with teammates. We shall see!

Meanwhile I am buying all the things with little to no input from him. I am sure I will have the opposite experience with my D27!

May not be an introvert. Boys are just like that. So many of them just wait til they show up to figure it out. Or, they could be very busy. My son wasn’t home and was rarely online during that time.
