Parents of Tall Boys....

Now that’s kinda scary.

My HS BF was 5’8" from the time he was 12, shaving with 3 o’clock shadow (we met when we were 16). He was the tallest everywhere. He never grew after that, so as posted above, you never know. He had very small feet, about 8 or 9, I think.

S (now 19) is 6’3" and wears a size 12-13 shoe. He was always off the charts for height and weight as a baby/toddler/kid but only got REALLY tall in high school. I’d say around 9th grade but he put on inches all the ay through, in fact I’m not sure he’s done yet.

DH was 6’3" 1/2 but now is only 6’3".lol. He wears a size 14 shoe. However you can’t always tell by shoe size… My brother is 6’2" and wears size 8 shoes. He didn’t start growing until college so that might have something to do with it. Our 9th grader currently wears a size 12 . Early on the doctors said he would be about 6’4". He has been growing lately but is only 5’9" with arms longer than my husbands. At this point I’m pretty sure he will be over 6’ but after that is all just a guess.

I have a relative that grew a foot taller AFTER he graduated from high school. That was a surprise.

Actually, many men and some women do grow some (sometimes a lot) after HS. D is annoyed she wasn’t among those who kept growing, especially since her room mate DID grow. An entire 12 inches of growth after HS is quite a bit!

H is 6’ 4.5". He has small feet for his height…size 10! A good strong wind could topple him! He is long waisted rather than having a long inseam. His shirt sleeves have to be 36 in length but inseam is only 34. He has a terrible time buying a car as his head hits the roof in so many models. Has plenty of leg room but has had neck issues from bending down to see out of the windshield over the years.
D2’s fiance is also tall. I buy him casual clothes at American Eagle in their Tall sizes. They also have smaller waist sizes although I have to order them as they don’t carry them in the stores. He is a size 13 in shoes that I find easily at Nordstrom rack. He also likes J Crew.

My son just turned 12 couple weeks ago, he’s 6 foot 2 inches and wears a size 15 shoe, hes always been big boned since birth but voice has not changed yet.im wondering how big he’s gonna get. Mom and Dad are 6 foot 1 and 6 foot 2

6’2" 17 year old wears size 12 shoes. He was always tall for his age. He had a deep voice and could grow a beard pretty early as well.

My son has always been in the 98 percetile for growth. He just turned 15 and is 6’3 and wears a size 14 shoe. His fingertips reach his knee, so I am guessing he has a few more inches to go. My husband is 6’6 and I am 5’6. He is dreaming about those last inches.

Wow…some tall boys here. My 20 year old son was about 5’10" when he graduated HS - now, he’s 6’1" so some males really are “late bloomers.” His 15 year old brother is 5’6" right now, and I suspect that he’ll be the same way…perhaps even taller since he resembles my side of the family and we are much taller than H’s family.

Late bloomer males have a challenge if they play sports seriously…my youngest is an excellent athlete and people are often shocked when they see him play because his size belies his ability. He has to work harder to get noticed. Some coaches prefer a less skilled big player over a more skilled smaller kid…not talking about football or other sports where size as matters…has been quite frustrating for S2.

I’m impressed with 3" in four weeks. Younger son grew 8" in two years which was pretty shocking. He ended up with stretch marks. Both kids were 90%ile in height from babyhood on, and about 25%ile for weight. Both are over 6’ and tall then their only somewhat above average parents.

My gut feeling is that feet grow before bodies and shoe size is a great way to guess future height. My sons feet grew to size 12 when he was around 12yo and then he grew 7" in one year. His final height is around 6’3". He is OK wearing regular shirts (I haven’t had to resort to buying tall men’s stuff) but pants can be a pain because of his inseam, I sometimes have to order online.

D grew 14 inches from the end of 6th grade to the end of 8th grade, she is just a hair under 6’ ft. She is 21 and probably done growing. :}

S is 16 and 6’1" or 6’2". He only wears a size 10 shoe, so is probably done growing (but maybe not).

I have heard for years that hands and feet grow first, then the body grows into them.

I am 5’6" and H is 5’10". I am not sure where the kids get their height from.

A friend of mine told me once that her brother grew a whole foot in the summer between HS graduation and heading off to college. I told her it was a good thing it was summer time and he could wear a lot of shorts and not have to depend on pants being the right length.

My 17 year old son is 6’2", but he only weighs 140 lbs. Shopping is tough. American Eagle is the only brand that really fits him well because they have tall sizes and are also very slim cut. He wears a size 11 shoe.

@Massmomm – I don’t know what type of pants your son wants to wear, but I rely on Old Navy for my boys’ khakis. They sell a 32 x 36 flat front khaki on-line. The 32 inch waist will probably be too wide for 140 pounds and I don’t think they sell the 36L in 31 W.

My brother was 6’3" and 140 pounds when he graduated from HS. He stopped getting any taller thereafter. I few 5" and gained 25 pounds between 6th and 7th grades and then stopped gaining inches in height and fortunately also stopped gaining any weight as well.

Must be very challenging to have kids that outgrow clothing and shoes so rapidly. My kids were 5% for height and weight, so never had these growth spurts, tho bought kids would like a few more inches in height (we suspect they’re done and have been for some years now).

We can’t find pants to fit my S at the waist. I have given up. He is 6"1’ or 2’ and is now 128 lbs. He has gained weight, he was only 121 at the beginning of the summer. I haven’t been able to find anything less than a 31 waist in the length he needs. I think I just need to force feed him until he gets to a 31 or 32 waist.

My little brother grew an inch or so in his early 40s after having initially stopped shortly after high school or thereabouts. I am hoping for my growth spurt in my early 60s.

30" waist, 36" inseam exists:

Of course, in the summer, he can avoid the inseam issue by wearing shorts. If he is really skinny, some go down to 28" waist.

If you keep feeding him, and he lifts weights, he may gain in places other than the waistline.
