Cali_mom, I think it depends on the kind of coupon. Around here anyway, BB&B sends out the 20%-off-one-item kind and the $5-off-your-purchase kind. It may be different in other areas. In my experience, they don’t apply the %-off kind to your whole order - but they’re very nice about applying the coupons to the more expensive items in my cart.

I second Zetesis’s question: Do those 3-in-one sheets and/or the Dropps really get stuff clean?

historymom - what fun to help your D shop for a “cuter” look. As I think you know, I have one who dressed the same way allllll through h.s. I think she has mostly shifted to JCrew (on sale only, heaven knows) and AE and a little Gap here and there. All three have soft stuff and hoodies that will feel like what your D’s used to, but look a little nicer/cuter. And of course you can go window shop at all those places and then sometimes go find similar things at Kohl’s and elsewhere, for less. (In their favor, JCrew, bless them, gives a 15% discount to college kids with ID and they also have a nice loyalty program, as does Gap and I think AE, too.)

At the BB&B around here, you can bring in a stack of coupons and apply one to each item. They are quite happy to take the ones with an expiration date that has passed.

That is too funny that we both just ordered the same things. Of course, in my efforts to simultaneously practice law and shop for dorm stuff, I ordered Son a queen/full duvet cover instead of twin, but once I got the nagging feeling that I’d messed up, it was easy enough to fix.

DizziMom - found Twin XL sheets at Target, I think they are 200 count, should suffice for D who insited on Black to go with her rainbow striped comforter…

Is anyone getting one of those Britta (or other brand) water purifiers for their kids? If not, where do they fill their water bottles? I know at the local college where I worked you could not bring in your own containers to fill up at the drink machine because of the potential contanimination from outside containers…

I was just going to suggest TJ Maxx. You never know what you’re going to find there, but if you find anything, the quality will be probably good and the price will be low. We actually have a Home Goods (large TJMaxx housewares store) that’s not too out of the way and I’m going to try to get there.

North Texas got an Ikea store maybe 5 years ago…it’s pretty far away and I’m personally past the Ikea stage of my life…I always thought I’d get there for the first time when we were buying dorm stuff. It seems like now we don’t really need to go there for anything in particular.

Cali_mom: I’m bring a Brita purifer! It’s huge lol but I can’t stand the typical water fountain taste. I would ask a current student --that’s what I did, and he said it was fine if I decided to bring it, and better than buying water bottles (and better for the environment too! )

I found knit twin XLs at Target last year (in black) fairly late in the game – I think in late Aug./early September – in any event, after I had already bought sheets. I snapped them up triumphantly.

Wish we could trade with someone - one of Son’s grad gifts was a pristine set of soft white XL sheets…they were a gift from an older woman whom I sure felt so “with it” that she knew to buy XL…only Son’s dorm has regular twin mattresses. Son was very proud of his thank note in which he found a way to express gratitude without actually saying he was going to use the sheets.

I actually have no problem holding onto them…with three kids who will live in multiple dorms, someone sometime will need XL sheets.

Missypie, hope your sheet usage is better than mine was with S. He needed twin XL for freshman year which I had to go out and buy then full for junior and senior year which I also had to go out and buy. Now D needs twin non-XL so I can’t even reuse those sheets.

Just got email from the space savers store that they’re out until Aug 12 (and we leave on the 17th). Called and they told me to call space bags directly but their phone pricing was awful. Found their web site pricing which looks good but web site won’t stay up.

Dell hell in miniature continued today because D had problems with her wireless working right – it kept dropping in the next room). Only took about an hour and 10 screws being removed from the bottom of the laptop to check on the wireless connectors (nothing wrong but a wire wasn’t sitting right so attacked it with an eraser – fun) and then they decided to try a software solution which was the right approach (so I didn’t have to pull all those screws after all). Works fine now. Discovered that the service contract was due to expire way before we got the new working computer so now I get to go back and “negotiate” that too.

Sharonohio - our Costco has some vacuum bags - not the spacesaver brand but…also you might want to check out Target, I think they carry them too

Thanks Cali_mom. I’ll check Costco (there every week) although I don’t remember seeing them. I need the really huge ones for linens. Not worried about clothing as much.

Pffft! Went to three Targets, Kohl’s, Walmart, BB&B and all sold out of twin XL sheets!!! I am soooo done with it! Will look on line to see if I can find the right colors. 11 days until she is there!!!

NorthMinnesota–wish you were around our area-- our Target(s) are fully stocked w/combo quilt/sheet sets, individual sets, etc. Tons of stuff.

Harriet: “Early Tornado with accents of Plane Wreck,” – too funny. I just came from venturing into son’s room and that’s precisely the term that describes that zone. I always feel better hearing that we are not the only ones, lol!

I keep worrying that he’s going to off-put a neat roommate w/the clothes all over, not picking up the kitchen area, etc. So good to hear the stories of kids who ‘neatened up’ in college! Being on your own will do that, I bet.

We have less than 2 weeks until son leave for family vacay then straight to college. Yikes!! Trying not to nag. Still same, here, though–no contact to roomies, and I’m on the verge of suggesting, yet again that he drop an email. Guess it’s better to stay out of it…!!!

I found it! the floorplan was in a booklet the school sent when S signed up for housing.
One thing they mention TO bring is a white board/message board with erasable markers for the door or wall.
Also, plastic dishware.
also, some “advice about sorting laundry”
and a backpack i.e. 50 lbs of textbooks
seems pretty realistic to me
just standard twin here

I put a package in every graduation gift basket I put together for D’s friends. Wish they had been around when I was in school

Good suggestion for the Brita purifier - picked one of those up as well

I think the only items D still needs are the type of things that you need to figure out with a roommate, the news of which from what I hear won’t come for at least another week

I am starting to dread the “clothes and shoes” sorting job…maybe D will wise up and just got to class in running gear for the first few weeks.
