My D lived with my sister in SF for a total of 6 months. In fact, they paid rent for a full month before she and her H even moved into their apt! It really was great of my sister for one, but for two, since they had gone with absolutely no jobs and no prospects, it was pretty necessary to get their bearings, know where they wanted to live, get jobs (which they both landed fairly quickly). Point is, if he is going to SF having some sort of support there in the way of a roof and morale, good for him. And if his vision is he’s living with a view of Golden Gate, he’s going to be doing very very well for himself!!!

Well, D had to work today. I drove her and dropped her off. There’s a pretty rainbow (snow-bow?) in the sky!

We have someone coming in tomorrow, I think, to test for mold, etc. The studio, we now know has lots of black mold from a leak in the roof. We’re waiting the insurance adjusters visit to get started on the work. The studio is separate building. Although we’ve lived in the house since the kids were little, this past year, we were able to purchase a 3’ by 3’ triangle that let us divide our lot into two lots (one with the house, one with the studio). We had thought we might buy another house in the neighborhood and keep the studio for ShawWife’s work.

I suspect the issue in the house is that ShawWife is again ultra-sensitive to any environmental contaminants again as a result of a few months of working in the studio (with on plaster).

Snow day here as well!
D didn’t take the apartment. My sister who is an attorney for the city looked up the building on a building website and found a host of violations. Too weird for words…we’re glad we had the info before she signed. (If anybody has plans on moving to NYC it’s a great resource.)
She came home in tears last night exhausted from long work hours and 2 hour commute home. But she LOVES the work she is doing…just have to find an apartment soon! H’s 87 yo gay uncle has a gorgeous apartment off Park Ave and he is down in Florida for now. I asked H to contact him to ask if D could stay there. For all I have done for this family - including said gay uncle’s own mother - you’d think someone would have suggested this earlier.

Woody - what is this resource you speak of? Because D was so long in looking for a place, I did find a website for SF that would list renter complaints etc, and even craigslist ads were posted to say, do not rent from such and such an address as the landlord is crazy. True or not, it definitely is a red flag. But NYC is so completely different. Really have to write to my friend in real estate, although certainly this is so far below her pay grade who knows. Anyway…

And yes… great gay uncle should definitely be an option! Four hours on a daily basis is a lot of travel leaving her no time to have a life. And she is far too young to not. But so glad she is loving her job. Very excited for S, as he does seem very excited about this new opportunity.

My sister has MS and has all kinds of air exchangers etc on her house for the very reason that environmental changes can really mess with how she feels. I am so glad she is so proactive because to meet her, spend time with her, you would never guess she has MS. Only when tired or when the weather turns too hot (not typically an issue in SF) can you tell something is “up.” Long point to say… Glad to hear it Shaw.

Hope your daughter gets something on the NYC housing front, Woody; the long commute is wearing. Is there anything like the YWCA any more?

Shawbridge – I’m not sure whether to wish that you find mold and thus a probable cause for the respiratory issues, or don’t find mold and thus don’t have to deal with expensive and difficult remediation. I wonder if a week in a nice hotel in your area would let her figure out if it is the region or the house?

RM – I know what you mean – we’re back to cold weather (3 degrees). My poor sister west of Philly is one of the several hundred thousand without power – she got up early this morning and watched as transformers in the distance exploded – very pretty, until it was her neighborhood’s transformer. Another snow day for their school, and spring break has been officially canceled for them because of all the missed school days due to weather this year. I feel really bad for her.

So much going on!

woody…Sending the apartment finding karma to your D. Poor thing must be so exhausted. D2 has been grumpy with the 2 hour commute due to cold/snow when it normally is only 30 minutes.

moda…your S must be very excited about the possibilities from the new job! This is an exciting time for him.

kmc…I like the odds of your S finding success in SF!
He has all of the tools and will be the architect of his own success.

RM…I have been wondering what was happening with the sale of your D’s company. Glad to hear there are no layoffs planned at this time.

cq…any news on your D’s chances of getting an interview in Chicago?

Sending key finding mojo to missy and Moda!

shaw …hoping you figure out what is ailing shaw wife soon. Sorry that she isn’t feeling well.

oregon…hoping the surgery stays scheduled and goes well. Sending strength, peace and comfort your way.

Things are picking up around here. D2 has been asked to move from tax to forensics as that department has a big project . She is very excited to try something new and gain new experience.

D1 has lots of irons in the fire. She heads out of state tomorrow to talk with a team about an open position. She is really struggling with the decision of whether she wants to live even further from family doing what she has already done. She also has an informational interview with a top executive from one of the professional sports teams here in the cities next week. Also lined up is a meeting with the owner of a marketing firm who used to work with H and also several professional sports teams. She also met with a university AD this week concerning a position that is open there even though she is “overqualified”. She thinks there is great potential to move into other opportunities there. In the meantime it looks like she will be working as a temporary full time worker within H’s company. So…lots of possibilities but waiting anxiously for something that feels right. Her networking has been awesome so hoping things start to pop!

Just got a text from H that his company has been acquired by a private equity firm. Hmmm…

ararab…does he own a piece of it?? Hope so!
RE: the YWCA. I’ve suggested women’s hotels etc… that simply did not fly with her. I did it myself when I first worked in the hospital in NY. It was weird but I had to do it to get my name on the hospital housing list.
moda - the site is the ‘nyc department of buildings’. (I hope I didn’t break any rules by posting that.) Just enter the address and… Voila! These are actual complaints that were filed by tenants, neighbors, inspectors, etc. Very interesting.
By the way, S and GF have been doing the same - or longer - commute but they are not putting in the longer hours that D does. (They also don’t have the savings D has…but I don’t think they would have given up their travels for that. And quite frankly, life is pretty good in woody house!)
northmin - D1 must be mentally exhausted with all this!
Shaw - mold remediation? yikes! Would you be OK with a teardown of the studio?

Wow, NMN, that sounds awesome for your D! Very proud of her networking skills and willingness to do what it takes. I have to say, there is definitely some up side for kids when parents can employ them. While S found nothing he did for H “intellectually stimulating,” he has said that the revolving cast of characters found in industrial workplace definitely kept him interested and showed him he really does have skills when it comes to working with all different kinds of people. Plus, he was able to work and study for the MCAT on his own schedule, which he knows he was extremely fortunate to do!

I feel pretty good in that a friend I had breakfast with last week said her daughter had reached out to two folks in the DC area that I had referred to her for networking, information, etc. I really do enjoy being able to do stuff like that, although rare. But truth is, I think most people really like to help young people. I saw some buzzfeed thing about how the guy from Men’s Warehouse doesn’t run background checks because he feels everyone deservers a second chance… I liked that. Especially since a friend of mine’s son is finding it nearly impossible to find a good job commiserate with his education because he has a DUI from the summer following his freshman year in college over five years ago now! They had felt they were teaching him a good life lesson by not hiring an attorney to get him out of it. And really, it was likely the worst mistake they could have made!

So sad about Hoffman dying from overdose. I totally feel for his young kids! However, I definitely have learned a few things . LIke, for example, heroin is a drug that changes your brain chemistry FOREVER… meaning, you end up always craving it even after 20+ years of sobriety and your happy place is just trashed. Forever. So much worse apparently than any other addiction in that regard. What I will never understand is why people ever make the decision to do it in the first place. There is always a first time… but it is not enough to say it could be your last. If you live, there is never any way back. Maybe the rock star deaths in the late 60’s and 70’s came at just the right time in my own life where it went to my core to never, ever, ever do anything like that. While I can’t say the same for some other choices of youth, this was a given. Addiction is devastating for everyone it touches, this much is certain. But heroin defies even the worst of it.

Ps… one nice thing about the new CC… it saves drafts so when I walk away for hours, my posts don’t go poof! :)

NorthMinnesota, D hasn’t heard anything. She did purchase an airline ticket to go to Chicago for a long weekend at the end of the month. She has been in contact with another organization since the summer, who is still interested in her, for a media-related internship.

LOL. Actually, GF’s family DOES live in that neighborhood with a view…but while their place is worth 10x that my country compound…it’s a fraction of the size so maybe not great for a young couple in terms of privacy

But in his vision, he was not at “home” – he was on some kind of set, either possibly filming something or involved in an access-restricted activity of an intelligence nature ;)

hello so much going on with all of you. I am glad you like the doctor Oregon and sorry that Shaws wife is ill. stands to reason that if it resolves when away it must be something environmental.
I think a reason to do traveling nurse is to see the world if you don’t have the means. I don’t think travelors are always treated the same, the don’t always get good assignments are the first to float. You need to be strong in your skills also which takes a bit of time. The girls in my unit travel quite a bit, swapping their ti
me around and hardly using any earned time
D1 is officially off the payroll. D1 is loving school. the social part can be hard. any of her friends are joining sororities which she is not interested in.
Work for me is going well. I find my 2 hour commute awful though and don’t blame woodys D it gets very old and I don’t do it every day.

Hey DTE good to hear form you. Soo glad to hear that work is going well…Can we assume that your post-concussive syndrome is in the rear view mirror? I truly hope so!
I get your comments about travelling nurses… experience is key.

Shaw, if you have an air cleaner, put it in the bedroom. If you do not have one, then go get a HEPA-filter unit. We also have an electrostatic filter that I use sometimes, but it generates ozone which stinks and irritates some. You have to be able to turn those types of units off once they start to stink. They are quiet and very effective, tho.

Good luck with the surgery, O! I would be a wreck.

D lost her phone today, but a nice fellow called the house and said he would turn it in to lost and found. Very grateful.

This weather is crazy. Hang in there, everybody!

Missing eddieo! Check in if you are out there and let us know how you are doing

Thanks for checking in dte! Have also missed you! :)!

Stomachache (not upset, just hurting) all day today. No idea why, but it is just enough to make doing other things unlikely.

Treetopleaf, We have 2 industrial strength air purifiers that we bought last year. We set up one in the room. Not sure if the other one is still in the studio. Note to self. Ask ShawSon to carry it across to house.

Feel better, arabrab! The puppy is counting on you! Fortunately, I’m here to take her for an invigorating walk up the hill in the subzero temps. I hope she’s not white cause I might lose her in the snow :)

And speaking of snow…mcgf posted this link with a comment about mcson’s native land and its subte SoChi/Russian anti-gay shenanigans…I do miss Canadian socially-conscious irreverence :)
