we had more like two feet here. I am tired of it. Do you believe I still have a hoarse voice? I am somewhat better although work aggravates it. I am bummed I have been trapped in the house with the girl scout cookies bring them to work tomorrow.
Watching SNL 40 years, its pretty funny
I played handbells in high school. I also played both treble and bass. I fancied myself to be good at it. However once I was out of college and in Texas, I kept it a secret that I had any experience. It’s stressful!
SNL special was good but Miley and Kanye? Why? And Eddie Murphy made no attempt to be funny?
We’re still in RI – probably heading back to Cambridge at some point today since more snow is predicted for tomorrow. We only got about 6 inches here at the shore, but it is wicked cold – 1 degree this morning; feels like -21 degrees with the wind chill.
I dozed through part of SNL 40 – clips of some of the older stuff were fun but there was a fair amount I didn’t care for. (I’ve never been a huge SNL fan.) Agree with you, mp – Miley and Kanye didn’t add a thing. Would have preferred to watch Downton Abbey, but H wanted SNL. Oh well, we’ll catch up on DA later this week.
Cold here. H and I talked about next year spending at least 1 week out of this and someplace warm. I typically like winter but this year has been brutal with no break. I’ve had enough.
We are supposed to get 4-8 inches here in NoVA later today. Just enough to make a mess of things. I need to ask S again for some pictures where he is. He is the cold weather kid, but I think he’s over it. dte- I keep trying to pretend I don’t have GS cookies in the house… Have already taken some in to work.
Day off so going to lunch with 2 of my gf’s.
I feel bad for any Girl Scouts trying to deliver cookies in the weather you’ve got in the northeast.
We’ve got 6" of the white, fluffy stuff this morning, and it is still coming down. First real snow in a couple of weeks, and nice on a holiday, though H has work.
I learned today that there is a ridge here just off the nearest great lake that assures that we get a lot of snow, a lot of the time. The weather said the area was to get 3-5 inches which was true for most but we ended up with nearly a foot overnight. I feel like there is a giant sugar shaker poised above us and every night we seem to get a fresh sprinkle… and it’s light as sugar too. It’s been sunny the last two days which made it especially cold, but personally I’d rather see the sun.
Shaw - I too would be less than thrilled with Shawson’s living situation and would probably inquire more deeply into what the expectations are… When D1’s now husband moved in with her “temporarily” we knew they were in a relationship (and had been for almost a year). H was less thrilled than I was, but I figured at the time it was better they lived together than rushed into marriage.
I too played the handbells at church when I was in Jr High and High School (until I went to boarding school) and still love them. My daughter has a handbell choir that practices in the church that has evolved into a community center next door to them. Apparently when they practice on Weds nights with the windows open the music floats down the street.
I hated Miley’s beginning, but then didn’t mind the rest. Paul Simon has a very severe peal and face lift thing going on and apologies all around but both he and Paul McCartney seem to have lost their voice. I really dislike Kayne West and noted that they actually did have security near his seat for Waynes World skit where they kept warning him to not rush the stage.
There were definitely some good moments… but I felt that having a star-studded audience left the home audience with a little too much silence. And yes, it would have been nice had Eddie Murphy said a little more or was at least a little funny.
Missed SNL. ShawWife braved the blizzard on Valentine’s Day and went to an opening. We avoided having dinner with this nice but borrowing couple and instead went home and we had this terrific chili (has cinnamon and coffee as ingredients) and watched a lovely indie film called Short Term 12.
ShawWife is preparing a dinner for next month for Passover and made onion soup from an unbelievable recipe. Tonight we sampled her first batch (of onion soup gratinee, although I don’t know if matzoh will work instead of bread) and then she found rock lobster tails at Whole Food for very little (2 for $14). She cooked them in Prosecco. Ah yes. Just the average Monday night.
We did have a little leakage yesterday.
Moda, I asked a bit today. The visiting young woman seems to be applying for jobs in foreign service NGO type and looking to go to type places like Iraq or Libya. He said she doesn’t seem to be thinking that rationally at the moment. He has been corresponding with online dating folks but hasn’t had the energy to try to start anything. He did, OTH, go on a hike yesterday with the magnetically beautiful woman. He’s having dinner tonight with an elementary school classmate of ShawD’s (though she’s a little older). Very bright. Undergraduate physics major who followed ShawSon’s footsteps in Moot Court at HS (and may have idolized him) and was a very good writer. I don’t think she’s a good enough physics major to go to a PhD program but she didn’t want to do so and on the plus side, did reasonably well at a first tier physics department. She’s going to graduate in May and her parents told me she’s got a job at a major law firm at the office near the campus at more than 6 figure salary and the law firm is supposedly going to pay for law school. I pointed out that that job really draws on a lot of her talents.
D2 dropped by last night just to say hi; first time she’s done that in a long time. Secretly, I wonder if the reason was that they have had a gas leak in their apartment – so no gas to cook with for about 4-5 days. (You think the school would comp them some meals, yes?). So I did what moms do: made her an omelette & fried potatoes; then she ate 2 bowls of cereal and an orange. I guess spending an afternoon doing acrobatics and aerial makes one hungry!
Ya think??? First clue Iraq and the second, Libya. And frankly, thinking about leaving the country when you aren’t thinking rationally (and maybe could benefit from some therapeutic intervention) sounds big time destructive.
Well, we’re still in RI. The reason we had planned to go back to Cambridge yesterday was because we had dinner plans tonight with friends who would be coming in from north of Boston. Turns out they’re both recovering from the flu and since the forecast was more snow, we all decided the reschedule dinner. So, H & I decided to stay here. Now, as it turns out, we’re actually scheduled to get more snow here than around Boston – by an inch or two. BUT, at this point, considering how much snow we have, it really doesn’t matter.
Moda, I will ask again as those locations seemed weird when I heard them. Maybe I misheard him. But, at least there doesn’t seem to be anything going on between them. He’s sounding much better.
Lobster in proseco. Poached? (And while I can see onion soup for Passover, somehow lobster tails just seem…wrong.
)
D’s belongings were delivered by the moving company today, and they even managed to put her bed back together, albeit they forgot to put in the bed boards. Still, nice that it all finally arrived.
Zetesis – what a nice surprise – and wow, it sounds like she really was hungry.
I had a great walk today – sunny, cold, but not at all windy so it was rather gorgeous with the snow on everything.
Current musings: how long does it take various charitable organizations to decide that a former donor should be taken off the lists? I’m still getting many solicitations for MIL, who is gone 3 years this month. The first year I nicely responded with a note that she had passed. Now I just drop the solicitations in the recycle bin. And yet they still keep coming. Two today.
Lobster tails are not for Passover. They were just a bargain. Just the onion soup. This is for ShawWife’s side of the family, which does not keep kosher. Even for them, lobster tails would seem a bit off.
Good to see that arabrab D’s stuff has finally arrived.
Moda, better information. The friend applying for positions for next year in the diplomatic service or something like that. So nothing immediate. He figures she’ll be thinking rationally by the time these opportunities actually arise. There’s also a plan for her to leave next month. I don’t get it, but OK.
He probably, shawbridge, needs to be firm with her so she does not distract him and interfere with his studies. Letting her stay in his dorm for over a month is more than generous.
Some charities just don’t seem to get it, arabrab, or don’t have an adequate system to check donor lists. What a waste to be still mailing things long after someone is gone.
A very good friend of mine is the executive director of a charity, I will have to remember to ask her about this mailing thing, but they don’t do a lot of mailings. I get thank you notes but maybe that’s because I just give to her for walks and other larger events.
I went skiing tonight for the first time in nearly 12 years… just like riding a bike. More or less.
Shaw - I have to agree that you don’t need to necessarily understand something that hopefully is very very temporary and he has a good enough head on his shoulder that he wouldn’t compromise his priorities. While odd, not worthy of digging for details - not yet, anyway. Maybe? Space would seem an issue if he lives in a typical dorm room… or has a room mate.
A little late in posting this but S and DIL got the house they wanted. Closing will be in either late March or early April. They are overjoyed. So much of what they wanted is in the house. Inspection done and nothing of note – just some minor things that you would expect for a house that is 20 years old.
Oh and another good thing. D made the running team that my H is on. So she will now also have to wear a “uniform” at all the running events that she does. H and her have been scoping out if there is any races in the Cape Cod area when we are on vacation. There is one the day after we get there that is big I guess. H said that they would have to be ready to leave for the race at like 3:45 in the morning. Ugh. Not my idea of a fun vacation but maybe they will decide to do it.
Great news on the house.
And the running team for your D. I sure wish that I loved - or could even stand-an “EC” that involved exercise or fitness.
Congrats on the house, RM.
Lol - MP the only fitness things I enjoy are yoga, walking and hiking.
