Shaw, I think you should “accidentally” pee on your contact lenses and see what happens when you submit a claim
Re: carrying bottles of wine…if that’s Flagyl you’re on, don’t drink the wine! There’s a whole crazy thread somewhere on the web where a bunch of future Darwin Award winners experiment with drinking while on Flagyl and the outcomes are both disastrous and kinda hilarious. Its like watching a train wreck…
Shaw, thanks for the laugh and I love that you know the weight of a bottle of wine.
CBB, welcome back!
Fallgirl - Yikes! Hope you are healing well.
Oregon, the whole phone/data thing sounds like something my H would do. In fact, he has done something very similar. I have just about lost my patience for people flying off the handle over relatively small issues. I don’t see how folks can live to be our age and have so little perspective.
kmc, it is pyridium, I believe. I had a very good Pouilly Fume last night for dinner.
Just finished a tough conversation with the woman who was and maybe still is going to coauthor my next book with me. I am really good at thinking up ways to think about things that help people act. This one is about how to think about career choices. But, this book is intended to be more popular than my previous books (though the publisher of the last one came to my usual coauthor and me and said, your last book is hitting its tenth anniversary and we’d like to relaunch with a foreword and a new chapter because it has been selling very well). But for the new book, I think I need a much more popular narrative and that is not my strength. And, it is not in my field, so I don’t really have the time to do 50% of the writing. She is in the career/executive coaching business and has a real interest in writing the book and is a hustler, but she seems to be turning to me for the narrative and is telling me that she wants to be acknowledge for being very busy too. Not sure it is going to work.
We have 6 GB a month for three of us and we run cloes to it all the time. S2 uses more. We went to 8 this month because we’re traveling and will need maps, etc. on the road. DH grouses, but criminy, it’s $15 for another 2 GB. He is another one of those folks with no perspective.
We do need to get S2 to start paying his share of life. He has been throwing $ at savings and student loans, but is still living at home (since May 2015). He wants to go overseas for a year or two, which to me seems like he’s postponing becoming a real live working adult. He’s so determined to work in one particular field, yet hasn’t sent out many resumes, and is stubbornly refusing to consider anyother options. He offers to pay rent, but never does. We also pay his car insurance, medical copays, etc. (he doesn’t have his own car, so we share, which is another kettle of fish). DH rants but doesn’t want to be involved with laying down reasonable ground rules for an adult living in our house. S2 isn’t making enough to move out.
He’s nice to have around, but I know that there’s an undercurrent of him feeling that he needs to protect me.
Shaw, focus on your recovery! Sorry to hear about the difficulties with your coauthor. Do you have any other contacts that might be able to collaborate with you more successfully?
Fallgirl, hope the lung is getting better. No wonder you were feeling so punk!
Thanks, Countingdown. Both kids are on our cellular plans and Netflix. ShawSon is still in school and so we are paying for a number of things. ShawD has just graduated but is traveling before looking for a job. However, a classmate who is in school part-time let her know about a job in New Hampshire that is right up her alley (primary care with a holistic link that she really likes). So, she asked if I could update her resume and help her send in an email. She is in Cambodia with phone and, I think, ipad, but no computer. I’m happy to help. I’m guessing we’ll wean her off the family accounts over the next year, but cellular plans and Netflix are all small change. If we pay that for a few years, it won’t be a big deal. Car insurance (which we used to pay for ShawSon) was more significant as is travel back and forth from California and on school-related trips.
I don’t have other folks, but if this co-author doesn’t work out, I will find one.
We pay phone for S, D and DIL. Just seems like a small thing to pay for them. We are on the 10G plan. I don’t think typically we come close to the max but I do have it set up to warn me if we do. I also pay for their membership to a wholesale club that they can also get cheaper gas at. Again - seems like a small thing that I can help with still. Their adults - pay their taxes, mortgage, bills etc but these seem like things that I can do to help out as they get on their feet.
Shaw, sounds like you need an intrinsically motivated author, which is ironic considering her career
I’ll send you the narrative mojo…plenty of that around here
So, I’m sitting under my poolside retractable awning in the thunderstorm wondering what possessed me to have a book club bbq tonight Then I remembered that a) gin tastes just as good in the rain and b) were it not for te book club, I’d have had to go to Indiana with mch tonight.
Mch is heading out to Indiana shortly to be a good friend and help his buddy do an estate sale of deceased mothers property. I cannot understand this guy’s sibs…they’re patently insane. First off, they were each left a very healthy chunk from mom’s estate…plenty to hire an auction company or folks who run estate sales without flying folks in from across country to haggle over Amish furniture. Secondly, eldest sib just rejected a full price offer on the house. Pre-approved.
Mch says our pal likely just needs moral support against the idiocy I told him to take the “good” scotch!
Mcson is still in MN on vaca, so I truly have a baching weekend ahead. However, Sunday. Have to start draining pool for liner change, but plan to float a lot prior if this rain ever stops.
ShawSon took the redeye back East after spending 48 hours up doing a take-home final. Maybe 24 hours studying and then 24 hours final or maybe the final. Not sure. ShawD was just about to head from Siem Reap to Thailand tomorrow when I sent her news of 11 bombings in Thailand, including two in a town which their overnight train would stop. They are now evaluating going instead to Laos or Myanmar.
I am loving playing Pokomon Go! I have been exploring parks and trails throughout the area and am so enjoying the nature trails and lakes. It motivates me to get out to new places and I am averaging at least five miles a day with the walking. As a nice result I have been losing weight as I get ready for D1’s wedding!
'09 Family, I have news. I’ve accepted an in-house position. I have been at my current/only firm for 31 years. Being at a job for 20 years sounds like you’re stable and committed. I started thinking that being at a job for 31 years sounds like you’re waiting for death.
Expect me to rant and whine and hate the new job for a couple of months. Once I get adjusted, I predict that I’ll enjoy it.
Glad you’re enjoying Pokemon Go, NM! Great that it is also helping you get outdoors and explore.
Enjoy your visit with your son, shaw. Safe travels to your daughter!
S2 completed his move from DC to Denver with the help of S1 (they drove together, with stops along the way to visit with relatives). S1 flew back to DC this afternoon. It has been great to have both of them together in DC but this is a new chapter. My sister and I are going to Denver in November to visit. I’ve been there once, many years ago. My sister has never been there. I am both sad he’ll be so far away and excited for him at the same time!
congratulations to MP!
Shaw I hope you are doing better.
i hope SHaw D is safe. I would love to have a job that includes holistic care. What a dream! in my clinical its medications for everything. mostly sleep.
I have been feeling lousy for a week. August is usually my bad allergy time and I hear they are bad this year. I am going to the urgent care tomorrow just feel lousy. Finished this semester .It has really been many ups and downs.
D1 boyfriend was in Myanmar with his job. he took some beautiful pictures of the people there.
Congratulations to you, mp! Rant and whine all you want – we’re here for you.
NM – D just recently explained the whole Pokemon Go thing to me. I have other friends who are enjoying it, too. OTOH, I also understand the objections some are expressing about some locations/stops in the game.
shaw – glad your recovery is going well. In your shoes I would be really worried about D – hope she/they decided against Thailand.
dte – hope you feel better. Congratulations on finishing the semester.
Re: cell phones – D & S are still on our plan, but they pay us back for the monthly cost. Actually, S’s phone is on military suspension with Verizon, so there are no charges for him at the moment. He’s paying his own way in Korea; not sure if it’s a monthly plan or what. We’ll have to figure out what happens when he comes back to the US in October. D and her fiancé will probably have to sort things out at some point – but he’s an Android user and D loves her iPhone …
Speaking of D – she and I went wedding dress shopping yesterday. This was our first visit to a bridal shop and it was a good experience. Because it was a weekday, D was the only customer. The owner was very helpful and not at all pushy. D is pretty clear about what she doesn’t want, (strapless, mermaid, trumpet, ball gown) which eliminated many of the styles. She found several possibilities, and now knows what to look for. D has quite a few vacation days left, so we’re going to a couple places near Boston this Thursday. Oh, and they now have a minister – so we’ve checked that off the list.
This afternoon D and I are going to a bridal shower – she of the $1200.00 veil …
CBB…glad your young bride (she NOT of the $1200 veil) is off to a good start!
Missy - congrats! I am ecstatic for you as these days I seriously would also love to be “in house” somewhere, just to do the things I’m good at without all the other business-generation considerations and shenanigans. I have a friend right now whose selling her interest in a business because she “just wants to work in her job” (in the same business). I completely understand how she feels
DTE…hope you feel better. Sending you the “calm down, histamines, August won’t hurt you” mojo
Shaw…sending safe travel mojo to your D!
Sevmom, bittersweet times. Its exciting, but I for one love having mcson nearby, so I understand your twin sentiments. My gf’s eldest son has been in Denver for about 5 years now. He bought, then recently flipped a nice condo and made a tidy profit. He’s recently made noises about a goal to make his way back to our neck of the woods. Nice when that happens too!
NM, I should join you in the Pokemon Go realm as I sorely need to get back on track. Getting an MRI on the knee next week to see if its torn worse than they thought initially. Hired a pt to come to my home and teach me some in-pool physio. Our goal is to get me in condition for the hill by the time the pool closes. Right now that’s also sounding like a metaphorically tall hill to climb
But there’s little point sitting around being ticked at Bayer.
Book club turned out to be lovely…rain held off long enough for us to have been thoroughly feasted and hammered enough to later swim in the rain and practice mindfulness while watching the beautiful crystalline splashes against the blue underwater light. Then we tried synchronized swimming with margaritas aloft. Fun times for which I’m grateful.
For out next meeting, everyone decided to freestyle and instead write our own obituaries. Should be interesting.
on antibiotics not convince its not mono.
MCH are the tendons 'better" at all?
Shaw I though you were talking about Rifampin. An antibiotic that does the same thing. turns the urine, and other body fluids orange. cant wear contacts.
CBB let me know what places you like. My good friend’s daughter is getting married she is looking for bridesmaid and MOB dresses .I went to dress shop with another MOB wasn’t that impressed .My friend isn’t thrilled MOG has already picked her dress and color.
Aaaahhhh – I’ve done minimal wedding dress searching on my laptop, but already those are the only ads I’m seeing!
dte – I will report back after our Thursday escapades. I haven’t even started to think about MY dress, but I know for sure it will be short. And I seriously doubt it will be from a bridal salon/labeled as a MOB dress. There are probably very nice MOB dresses out there, but it seems as if the only ones I’ve seen recently at weddings are all dowdy looking. That’s just not my style. And on another topic – really hope you don’t have mono …
kmc – I want to join YOUR book club! My various clubs are certainly fun, but not nearly as fun sounding as yours. Where’s the bus?
Bridal shower was very nice. It was done as an afternoon tea – although champagne was served …
CBB- I bought my dress from Nordstroms. Didn’t even look at the MOB dresses at the bridal salon. And it was short - I am not a long dress person although the MOG wore one which was totally fine with me and D.
I would also like to join kmc’s book club.
Hope you are feeling better dte.
Congrats MP ! Very exciting of you to be taking a new opportunity.
NM -I see people around here who are obviously playing Pokemon GO and it does look like fun!
I am much improved and even went to yoga yesterday. I could not have done that even a week ago. Interestingly talked with a friend at church and found out that she has the same story - rarely sick, got a cold and it turnd into pneumonia.
DTE, I hope you are doing better. ShawWife is also feeling off. Congrats on making it through the semester.
DTE, I’m doing fine. ShawD is safe. After I talked with her, she decided to go to Laos (she’s on one of 4000 islands there) and then Kunming in China before heading to Bali. Life is tough. She’s having a wonderful time. Yesterday she ate dinner at a place called Bug’s Cafe, which she and her companions learned as they looked at the menu as a place that only serves bugs. So she had a tarantula samosa, scorpion something, ant something, etc. Apparently silk worms are really gloppy and scorpions and tarantula are pretty bad too.
I just looked at the Laos island on Google. Looks beautiful but definitely on the backpackers path and not the luxury boomer path.
kmc, one of the exercises my friend from Boulder and I did quite a number of years ago in thinking about what we wanted to do with our lives was to write obits up through the age 100 with a license to be a bit fantastical (e.g., no self-editing). It was surprisingly useful.
