Goo luck NM! Nasty virus’ going around I know.
NM, sorry about the virus. Thanks for the good thoughts for D.
The sun is out in a cloudless sky. If I just forget that this is Oregon …
2 hours shoveling the 3.5 foot drift off of the deck. It is all starting to freeze and
getting very heavy. The snow plow actually came through just now. First time in 14 years.
We do not thaw until Monday.
Hope everyone is doing well. I am going to invite the street of neighbors tomorrow night for
soup and salad.
H is a very nice person but we have only been apart 3 days in the last month. b-(
Lol. Now you know the story of my life, Oregon, as hubby and I work together
All kinds of theoretical turmoil here but I just keep my eyes on the horizon … Mcson’s gf is virtually hysterical about healthcare shenanigans right know…understandably so, because she has RA and receives phenomenally expensive (and experimental) treatment under her parents plan. So its not like she doesn’t have a dog in the race. Its just hard to watch all the emotion, and at the same time experience tells me at the end of the day you buckle down and meet what you face…its hard to express this without sounding callous…but I’ve been there.
Feeling existential I suppose. Enjoying my odd swim dome as an escape.
Hope you get a melt and more sun soon, Oregon, and sending fairy dust for d!
Due to a series of immature and ill-advised decisions, younger D and her BF are on a Greyhound bus from Colorado, heading straight into the ice storm. D’s semester starts on Tuesday and I am praying that she makes it back by then. A four day, inexpensive trip to CO for a NYE rave has turned into a two week nightmare. It’s the kind of experience after which we will not have to say “we told you so” - but it’s difficult to see your child experiencing the consequences of their bad decisions. We have provided enough assistance that she hasn’t starved or frozen, but we can’t do anything about the ice storm. I predict a night spent in the KC bus station, and that’s about the safest scenario I am imagining.
Please say a prayer and/or send good karma if you’re so inclined.
MP sending good vibes for your D and BF. We have to let them learn but its hard to watch and worry.
NM I have just “finished” that virus. It is violent. My D1 had it and shared. it is very contagious. I wasn’t around her very much, except to bring her things and “empty” one thing. and I still got it. I am not allowed to go to work for 3 days after symptoms go away. This is norovirus. Evidently you cant get this type of noro again. I am hoping my husband has already had it. tick tick, waiting to see…
I am looking for a dining room table, want reclaimed wood. I cant decide If I want oval or rectangle. any suggestions Also has anyone had success with the furniture from birch lane etc as far as chairs go. don’t want to spend a ton on the chairs as I want to spend more on the table.
dte…If I had the right space I would love to have a round dining room table. Always easier to find room for an extra person and conducive to conversation. Both of my D’s have dining tables made by their husbands’ but D1 looked at some handmade ones on Craiglist! Local furniture makers had ads there. Several friends have had good luck finding chairs on Wayfair. I have a good dining set and I am ready to replace as my tastes have changed but then I remember how much I paid for it…
Sounds like no fun at all.
We have an amazingly foggy day here out on the houseboat. Eerily beautiful. ShawWife took a gorgeous slow motion video of several birds landing in the water at low tide and then taking off. Like Discovery or Nat Geo channel. It’s on her FB page. When I logged into the the private CC 13 page, all the discussions show as blank to me.
DTE, we have looked a number of times at tables and chairs. We ended up getting some really nice chairs from a place on Route 9 in Chestnut Hill/Newton/Brookline area. We are still using the table I bought as a post-doc. What we liked was so expensive, we passed. We figured we could fly to Italy, buy it directly, and ship it back and even with the airfare, we’d be better off. Of course, we never did that. Have to think about duties, I guess.
Healing mojo to all with the horrible sounding “bug.” Warm, thawing thoughts to you, oregon.
And good karma to mp’s D and bf. Yup, been there re: ill advised decisions – with S. (D has always been the rational one, even at a young age.) A recent one of S’s involved buying a 1970something Corvette and having the USAF ship it to South Korea (they’ll pay to ship 1 car) with the plan to make lots of $$ selling it there. Apparently Koreans love American “muscle cars.” All went well until he got over there and discovered he couldn’t sell it unless it passed some computerized emissions test – but the model he bought was a year or 2 before Corvettes had the computer connection installed. Sooooo – the USAF paid to have the car shipped back to the US. He’ll be looking to sell it here. Best case: he gets his money back on it.
We have an oval table – handmade natural cherry with 3 leaves. Made by an outfit originally based in Worcester. I personally like the look of an oval table, but YMMV.
Yesterday one of our condo neighbors here in FL serenaded us all at sunset with her bagpipes! Very fun!! We toasted her with a glass of wine on the beach …
D and BF have now rented a car and are less than 4 hours away from home. If the weather maps are accurate, they should make it.
Keep us posted!
Scary.
I left on Christmas day in 1970 in blizzard to drive many hours to see my BF and his family.
I had to drive behind a truck to see the tail lights.
Of course, I stopped at the last rest stop to fix my make up ;;).
I imagine my mother was not pleased but as I paid my own way she
did not have much of a vote.
CB, goodness on the car scene. Love the bagpipe imagery.
Hope everyone is feeling better. H has a cold and had a tooth out today…
D and the BF are back at her apt, at the end of day 15 of the four day trip, having not slept (except on the bus) since Wednesday. I should sleep well tonight ( the two of them also I’m sure.) Thanks for the positive words and good thoughts.
Glad they made it back safely!
I got home last night later than expected due to train delays. I was tired and really just wanted to go to bed. H asked if I was going to make dinner. I’ve been gone all week, and he’d only convinced S to make 1 of the 3 Blue Apron meals we received for the week, so I had 2 to choose from. S went back to his place earlier this week.
I said I’d make one of the meals IF he helped me. I told him I’d only have him do easy stuff. (Remember - he’s the one who doesn’t know how to cook.)
So I ask him to turn on the oven, and he looks at the oven, then finally says “I have no idea how to turn the oven on.”
We’ve lived here over 2 years and in all that time he’s NEVER turned on the oven to cook anything!
Shaking my head with a knowing nod, @college_query … my H may know how to turn on the oven, but he apparently has no idea how to put a plate or glass in the dishwasher! I try to let these things go, but sometimes I just lose it …
Glad the travelers are home, @missypie.
Glad your D and her BF are safe, mp! It looks as if we will be lucky today and the ice storm will not happen here in the DC area. Just cold rain.
I am just coming off of a busy week and a half with quarter end close and did not really have a weekend last week. I am thankful that I have both Monday and Friday off this week. Our company headquarters (not the location where I work) is very near the Capitol so they close the building down on Inauguration Day and we get the day off. My sister will be flying in that day and we are marching on Saturday.
Hope all who were under the weather are feeling better.
MP glad your D is safe. I always worry and then ask myself "why did I have kids?
Got out today think I picked some new Bathroom tile for the powder room (we had a flood)
I want a rather expensive table and want it to pass down. Don’t think the chairs will pass down. so don’t care as much.
The table I like is reclaimed cherry with leaves that insert when not in use.
Went out today for a short while. it was nice haven’t been out since last Monday. exhausted. still cant really eat.
IDK if NM and H had the same virus but I couldn’t be giving a party! kudos to you.
Fall girl D1 is marching as well. Hope you are all safe.
Cant believe D2 and I graduate this May. crazy.!
Let us know the interview results.
Shaw, enjoy your boat.
^DTE, plug on. Cool that you and D will graduate at the same time.
I hope all of you CC13 folks are feeling better.
^DTE, we are having a blast on the boat. I was able to post one of ShawWife’s magical videos on the private website. ShawSon and GF stayed with us on the boat. We watched the football game together and then they drove me to the airport on their way home. We picked up a friend of GF on the way. He asked ShawSon about his visit to GF’s parents. Very funny. He learned that there is a theory in China that Jews are an alien race with superior powers of intelligence like Einstein. The mother didn’t say that she subscribed to the theory but holds very positive views.
The GF was anxious prior to his visit. ShawSon told her, “Relax. Your parents will love me.” Uncharacteristically, the GF’s mom told him when he was leaving that “All of us really like you.”
Thirty-five (?) years ago, two months after meeting me, ShawWife invited me to visit her parents for her mother’s 50th anniversary party. She was snarky when she picked me up at the airport and I asked what was going on. She said she was nervous about my meeting her parents. I said “Relax. Your parents will love me.” She said,“That’s what I’m worried about. They are going to start planning the wedding.” They did love me but did not planning the wedding. However, her parents had rented a condo in Maui for Christmas vacation with rooms for each of the sibs. They said, “We will pay your way there and all of your expenses. You can invite a BF, GF, friend who will have to pay their way there but after that we will cover all expenses on the ground.” .While we were there, ShawWife asked her mother if she could invite me. The mom said, “Only if you pay me $50.” She’d made a $50 bet with ShawWife’s father that she didn’t now me long enough to invite me.
Shaw that is such a good story! All men think these things my H thinks he is the best thing that ever happened to me.
We are actually trying to put together a trip to the Islands. Cant coordinate all the kids thought so It may be one D and BF sort of a graduation present. We are going with friends and their kids one of whom is also graduating. We are footing the bill for our family.
Going to see Trevor Noah soon should be interesting.
Couldn’t go out today. I remember getting a stomach virus years ago that kicked my bum, and wasn’t right for months .Oh well the weight loss has started in earnest.
Shaw I know you know my pain in school.
I am not on the private site.
DTE, I don’t think I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to ShawWife but rather that I was everything that parents would want for their Jewish daughter. Educated at the best schools, very strong career, likely to be financially successful, Jewish and nice. I think that’s what ShawSon thought for the his Chinese GF’s parents. He’s all the things I was and it turns out that being Jewish is a big plus for the Chinese parents as well.
I definitely know of your pain in school. Just persevere and you will be done.
Hey Fallgirl! I’m going to the DC march—along with my D, son’s GF, her mom and two of my sisters.
I also have tickets to the inauguration… should be interesting!
