Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Hey oregon101…I’ll keep you company!
I have been sleeping very litlle.

Heading to MOA again today, Really need to finish things up this weekend,
D2 called yesterday frustrated as she studies and juggles moving her car for snow emergency plowing. Made me laugh as she learns how to deal with these things. When I look at the big picture I really do see growth! :)

I’ve wondered that when I’ve had strep…after about two doses of antibiotics, I felt so much better. Before antibiotics, did folks with strep eventually get better, or did the infection spread and become fatal?

As for insomnia, get out that really dull book you’ve been trying to get through. When I was pregnant I’d fall asleep right away then wake up a few hours later and not be able to go back to sleep…that is when I read the Memoirs of Catherine the Great.

Can I just say how GLAD I am that we’re not waiting for ED/EA letters or emails this year?!

For sure! A guy in the office has a son who found out last night that he’s in the school but not in the dept he wanted. Is that binding then?

A couple I know were waiting for a Stanford ED decision…don’t know what happened yet. I do know that the entire family is extremely politically and religiously conservative so Stanford seems lilke an odd choice.

I think George Washington died of a strep infection. some people I think just got past it. Sorry about the coat phone and ID. I guess people have nothing else to do. Drives me crazy.
I use a heating pad to help me sleep. I put it on a timer and the warmth helps me fall abck to sleep.

DTE, hope you are feeling better today!

D2 just texted. Another final done, two more to go on Friday! Gosh I miss her and D1!

: Thanks historymom for the sun. More sun, please ; )

Re Strep: Died OR Ended up with rheumatic fever is what. Then died young from a bad ticker valve. Strep is one thing I don’t mess with. I’ll take the shot for it, even though I generally avoid antibiotics like the plague (re: resistance).
At one point in time though, before antibiotics, they did use colloidal silver to treat strep, and it truly still does work if dosage is right and not proteins kind.

DD just called. Finished her final this morning. I’m glad she didn’t joke about missing her test, that would have made me cringe. Even if it was a joke. Kids and their sense of humor. I guess that is a way of de-stressing. (haha)

Let’s take that bus down to Mexico and get some siestas. I vote for either Hugh Grant or Hugh Jackman to join us on the bus.

S2 just updated me. His chemistry final went “very well” and the rest of his email was about misplacing a favorite sweatshirt. For that he is devastated. He has one final left to go tomorrow and it is his hardest class, so keeping my fingers crossed for him.

Sorry to hear about the lost coat. I think it is better to buy a coat in the place where it will be worn. Coats that they sell around here are fake. They look like a regular, warm coat but are thin and designed for just show. My NY coat weighs twice as much and keeps me twice as warm.

I hope everybody stays healthy.

Gosh, maybe the bus needs to swing up to NY for a bit of coat shopping. It is impossible to find a coat in Texas that keeps me warm. I have thyroid issues so even in Texas I’m always freezing. I even bought a down coat from Land’s End that is supposed to keep one warm down to 0 degrees and I shiver in it when it’s 40.

So sorry to those who are under the weather–hope you’re feeling well soon. Can I jump on the bus too? I second the idea to swing down through sunny Mexico! And thanks for commiserating with me regarding D’s coat/phone/ID…after we find a replacement, maybe I’ll suggest that she also bring an old ski jacket that she can use for parties. Chances are I’ll get one of those “you’re kidding, right?” looks…

Let’s take both Hughs.

I spent yesterday with a frozen headache. This comes from being outside too much t(and maybe a little dehydration from a 50th b-day/holiday gathering with some friends the night before). NMN hit the nail that we’ve had some bitter cold days and now I regret not getting outside over Thanksgiving weekend to do any kind of Christmas lights because my neighbors are all lit up and we are… umm… not.

As for the bus ride… I would die to see a bunch of middle-aged women in pajamas TPing a house. Something like that would knock Tiger Woods right off the front pages!

Oldest D had a math teacher at her big public school who became a math teacher because it while it came easily to her, she could see that most math teachers didn’t really teach in English. It is a rare skill that a math oriented person has a remotely similar skill set to someone who can use language as the primary teaching tool. It really doesn’t help someone like me to just watch someone do math.

I spent this morning between Urgent Care (where son was Dxed with raging ear infection), the uptown diner (where the absolute best breakfasts are served) and the Northface store buying son a new coat. He wanted one specifically for skiing and while we have a lot of different weight coats around here, this one not only should keep him very warm, it’s very lightweight AND as I was paying thru the nose for the thing, the salesmen pointed out that it also has some sort of avalanche chip in it. So he has that going for him. :)

Son has only lost a coat once. But then saw it on another kid and said, I think that’s my coat. Kid said, not. Son said, lets just check and sure enough, he had put a little tiny pocket Buddah in this “secret” pocket. Works better than a name tag - especially when it’s missing deliberately by someone else who isn’t going to care much about an ID, cell phone etc. Then again, he went to a very small HS and his college is small as well, so that helps.

Modadunn–“As for the bus ride… I would die to see a bunch of middle-aged women in pajamas TPing a house.” AND they could not call us helicopter parents because we would be on a BUS:D.

hope everyone is feeling better. I woke up with the blahhs today. Life feels directionless. I do think that the years I did all of the Christmas Shopping in the fall were the best. Now I am “mostly” done but totally without drive to find those last few items. Also feels like none of the gifts are very special or even surprises this year.OK OK I know it is not about gifts at ALL but since I am the purchaser I have taken pride in my gifts in the past. It was like a savenger hunt to me.
OK, better drink some coffee and go exercise to get that seratonin level back up.

I feel the same way. Nothing in the stores has blown me awy. Like they sing in Annie, “I know the Depression’s depressing…” I don’t know what, if anything, under the tree will generate those squeals of delight.

missypie, if it’s JHU ED and he didn’t get BME, then it’s not binding. I remember seeing that on their website last year.

I remember that last year as well because Son applied for BME, but alas was rejected entirely. AND like they say… he is where he is supposed to be.

Funny thing this morning… son had on his college sweatshirt, which isn’t all that well known here (much like Carlton in the east)…anyway, we were walking across the street in a very busy part of town and this car honked at him and pulled half onto the sidewalk with the tale of the car still in the road. Son was slightly startled and we were both wondering what he had done. The guy rolled down the window and was like, “hey, my daughter went there!” And then proceeded to talk to S about the school and how much his daughter loved it. Too funny.

As for Christmas… I became practical this year. Give me a list because in years past I could do the “wow” factor and be happy with returning stuff if need be. Would just get the kids what I know they want and save on the after-Christmas legwork. Son does want Carhart overalls and so, I will make the trek to Cabela’s… which is definitely a place that slightly freaks me out since there isn’t a hunting bone in this family.

One fun thing we’re doing though is H went and bought a ton of gift cards and has some dice game for the kids to all play Christmas. He got universal ones - best buy, Itunes, American Express and Visa. Not sure how it will go, but this is our surprise thing.

I am from the NE and know how prestigious Middlebury is. Lets face most kids want money and gift cards. I did buy D2 tickets to a venue she ants to see for her birthday. that will be a suprise. I am feeling better today.

My mom always gives our kids money in some creative way (e.g. tied onto a little money tree or something) but this year her creative way is driving me nuts. She heard this on TV or something…the recipient is to cash the check before Christmas, go shopping for what they want, wrap it up, take a picture of it, both wrapped and unwrapped and send the pictures to the giver.

Sounds good in theory, but how do my kids know what I’ve bought them already? There is a high liklihood that they will buy something someone else has bought them. Plus, shopping to the 14 year old means me taking the time to take her. Plus at least the older two kids would much prefer money to anything else they could buy. I know my mom thinks this is fun and clever, but it’s all just more work!
