Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Well, with a church wedding, then I assume pictures, then outdoor reception, if it will work with your shoes, ditch the hose before you get to the reception!

No hose vote here too, it’s just not fashionable in Southern California. If you look at celebs, they never wear them, and it would be tough to find shoes for summer that aren’t exposing toes! Fashion faux pas (or however you spell that - hope Moda’s grammar critic isn’t reading) to show toes with hose.

Zetesis – Congratulations on the upcoming wedding celebration! I second the idea of “super sheer and summery” hose unless your legs are nicely tanned and you’ve got a great pair of dressy sandals to wear with the fabulous dress.

Agree with cpeltz - wearing hose means no sandals or open toe shoes, so you are limited to pumps or sling backs. I wouldn’t worry about the groom’s mom - you’ll be the cool, fashion-forward California mom!

But if you are more comfortable with hose, I do think there are sheerer (is that a word?) options out there than there used to be. When I was doing that hose research yesterday, I really couldn’t tell if some women were wearing hose or not - it was that sheer and colorless. (oy - I hope no one noticed me staring intently at their ankles )

And sorry about the rollercoaster, but kudos to your D for bouncing back with such positive results!

I vote for no hose. I went without at a church wedding, in March, in Illinois no less. And I was wearing classic pumps. Don’t know if anyone looked at my legs.

Ditto the no-hose vote. Got married myself in a gorgeous cream a-line/crinolined dress and NO HOSE. (But my silk beaded sandals went perfectly.) Granted, this was the same resort wedding where the entire bach and bachelorette crew ended up skinny dipping in Lake Huron at 2 a.m…But really, it WAS swanky, I swear ;)

I haven’t been around for awhile–Hi all!

On the “hose” subject–I’ve discovered the best leg makeup I wear to take the blinding nature out of my lily white legs: It’s called Airbrush Legs by Sally Hanson, available at Rite Aid/drugstores. It’s a spray you spray in your hands and rub onto your legs. It blends very well, and has a really nice, subtle look to it. I chose “Light Glow” and I really think its fantastic! it’s water resistant and washes off with soap and water in the shower. HIGHLY recommend it!

Try out any of the artificial tanners - even the really mild ones like Jergens - a while before you need to show your legs. My 14 year old is a red head, and even the “light” Jergens got dark around the knees and ankles with her very fair skin.

Isn’t the other thing they tell you to do is exfoliate all the dry skin before you use any type of artificial tanner? Welcome back, SJTH-- and thanks for the info on the Sally Hanson. That’s the kind of thing I’ve always wondered about so good to get some firsthand opinions.

Hey all
Sorry I have been unable to keep up with all the chat - been busy around here. Getting ready to go to court over a property dispute, showing my dogs (at which I wear hose), putting my manuscript together (poetry) and trying not to worry about #TS.
Moda - you are correct - and encouragement was the key. He will eventually figure it out, my main goal is to make sure he does not give up and give in.

Gosh! I swear I didn’t mean to do it but I MADE THE 10K-th post!! Whoopee!! And I believe I was wearing knee-hi hose when I did it!!
(I’ve really got to work on getting a bigger life…)
PS H currently has 5 trans-atlantic tickets in hopes of one day returning to me: 2 from London, one each from Paris, Barcelona and Lisbon.

^^ good luck woody to your H returning, heard Heathrow is operating again

While it is the bride’s day… the only person standing next in line is the Mother of the bride. Sure the groom counts, but his Mom? Not so much. Just saying. (kinda kidding, but I will absolutely be looking at the MOB for my cues when the time comes). Fortunately I have two daughters so I’ll have my moments.

Wow, the votes are leaning towards “no hose …” Guess I wouldn’t have thought that …

Does D2, who is maid of honor/only bridesmaid, wear hose? She’s wearing strappy sandals …

with strappy sandals, definitely not…and I thought it was just down here in sunny florida that we passed on pantyhose ;)

lindz126, it’s a movement to liberate us from the synthetic cricket effect (at least in my case…) and it’s now spread to the northern climes as well with the budding of spring. But I suspect the only thing that keeps hose-cos. in business is the fact that half the country gets snow ;)

S1 did not get an offer from Firm B. He was shocked and disappointed. The rejection email didn’t give any explanation, so I’m free to make up my own. I speculate that he was too “polished” for what they want (perhaps perceived as a rich kid who wants to play at being a tough guy and not actually gritty enough to work on the rigs). Of course, I realize that is like the person who answers the interview question about your biggest weakness saying, “I’m just too good at everything.”

S1 doesn’t think that could possibly be the reason because his self-image is that he is not at all the preppy sort. But, he kinda is. He loves nice clothes and wore an outfit the first night that even he admits stood out from the rest (silky beige pants rather than khakis and expensive shirt, lightly starched, rather than the basic blue cotton button down the other kids were wearing). He had been excited about the money for Firm B and the dangerous element also appealed to him. But, we have to trust that the universe knows what it is doing. Firm A considers his impeccable manners and dress to be important assets. He likes urban environments, so that is another plus since Firm A will have him posted in major cities around the world whereas Firm B would have had him in remote locations.

Anyway, he has moved on and sent an email yesterday accepting the offer from Firm A. He has a lot to do if he really will be starting a month from now (work visa, international phone, etc.). It would be nice if he could head directly to Australia and bypass Rio, but that’s just a detail. As least those destinations aren’t affected by this big ash cloud.

Sounds like maybe he is a better “fit” at Firm A and it sounds as if it will work out for the best.

It’s still disappointing about Firm B. I was in a similar situation 2 years ago, interviewed for a job I was very excited about, thought it went very well, etc., then I didn’t get the offer. A few months later I was hired at the company I work for now and love it. I hope the same for your S. And congrats to him, by the way. Rio and Australia sounds very exciting!

Analyst - sorry to hear about firm B. On the other hand – celebrate HE HAS A JOB!!!

On the pantyhose issue. I am still a firm believer on them in early spring/fall/winter. Not so much in the summer but really depends on the outfit I believe. To me it means “polished”. So if I had on a business suit I would have them on. If it was a flirty skirt/dress and summer probably not. I do interviewing and I will say I’m always impressed when the women come in in a nice business suits with pumps and hose. Sorry I’m old fashion. I also like the men to come in with suit and tie. We are business casual but I expect that the interviewee should “dress for success” so to speak.

Having trouble keeping up with the posts. D and her friend are on break here for the week and it adds work. Not complaining just more food to cook/ more dishes to clean/ more stuff to pick up. You all get the picture.

S has found a job for the summer (where I work). Now if D could only find something. She has been submitting resumes but she has no experience. Just needs something to get some spending money for school for next year. Hopefully something will come through.

D1 did not wear hose. She interviewed with 2 groups of three; 3 were women in black business suits and none wore hose. They all wore black pumps too. This was at a corporate headquarters. Men had suits and ties. She said the interview went well but is concerned that one of the men kept talking about her “youth”. She would love to work for this company but the job isn’t in her area of expertise. Would be more comfortable in a different department. Now it’s just the waiting game.
