S2 was invited to interview for an internship/job he had applied for back in January, but really can’t do it now because of summer school. He sounds happy, but too complacent for my taste. I don’t think he is working nearly as hard as he should for his classes. Maybe he will pick up his game in summer school. It’s a journey and right now he is in the sleeper car on the train.

NM, I can sympathize on the waiting. It is brutal. I wish her luck.

LOL #TM!! At the moment I’m in a lousy mood about legs in general, and more specifically, knees. In an effort to rev up my metabolism I decided to move up from walking & using the elliptical machine to running. Honestly, I only did it for 1 1/2 weeks and now my kneed is killing me. I’ve self-diagnosed (isn’t the internet a wonderful thing?) it as tendonitis. So I’m not running, but even walking is painful. I skipped golf yesterday. I am NOT a happy camper!! I have way too much to do to be hobbling around.

Firm A sounds like a great fit for AnalystS1. I admit to some level of envy. Okay, a huge level of envy! Really sounds like a great job for him. D had an interview that she thought went great; but doesn’t seem that it worked out. Lots of great candidates out there.

I think the end of the year is really a stressful time for all students. D continues to search for a part-time position for some spending $; registered for her summer class; working out the details of her lab work. Oh, and finding a summer sublet until her apt is ready. Only needs it for a month. Most want to sublet for the entire summer; I suspect as they can’t find folks to do so more will be willing to offer it up for a month.

Just back from the gym and not enough time to shower before the Dell tech guy comes to fix D1’s laptop. Ish… Furniture replacement is supposed to happen this afternoon. I am heading out of town tomorrow for a scrapping weekend at a friend’s lake home. I can hardly wait!

Thanks everybody. I slept well last night for the first time in weeks, so at some level this must feel right. He knows and likes everybody at the firm. The team leader in Australia is the same man he reported to while in Rio last fall and they get along really well. The Australia thing should last about three months and then he will be moved to another country and another client. His housing is paid for by the client when out of country, but not while he is in Rio at headquarters. I’m not sure renting something in Brazil makes sense if he is almost never there, but I guess that’s just another thing to figure out. Luckily, S does not stress over details like that.

He was playing soccer last fall in a half field game and kept getting out of position by aggressively going after the ball. He said one of the other players muttered, “The gringo has no roots,” (in Portuguese of course). I’m going to order a coffee mug with that written on it as one of his graduation gifts. I think it fits.

Had to laugh…went out to eat with H and noticed how crowded all of the places with outdoor patios were. Only in Minnesota would the patios be crowded when it is 60 degrees! Haha!

Spent most of the day changing hard drive in D1’s laptop, updating OS, getting virus protection, loading Microsoft Office, blah blah blah! I am tired!

I know some of you travel a great deal for business and my search on threads on International phones wasn’t turning up much. I want to get S a new phone for graduation. When he was in Brazil last year, he was given a phone by one of the Brazilian students so a non-issue. The phone he has here is probably five plus years old – no camera, no internet, just a plain phone. I am looking at the Blackberry Tour. I use a Blackberry curve and he said he prefers a Blackberry to an IPhone. I will talk to the RIM folks but wanted to see what people do about contracts. Do you buy a different “sim” card for each country? I’m thinking that is good for in-country calls but may not be any good for him to be able to call the U.S. I don’t know what a sim card means in terms of a contract. Do you even have a contract? We use Verizon but somebody said they aren’t as good Internationally as AT&T. I have asked S to ask his company as well wanted some other thoughts.

Just asked H. here’s the scoop. AT&T without a question. Go for a blackberry with a replaceable “pay-as-you-go” sim card. For H to check email in London, it could have cost him $150 on his iPhone. Simcards now have local internet access as well as the phone access.

While I’m on an roll, anybody have thoughts on the best portable external hard drive. Obviously, space is an issue so the western digital mybook that I use looks too bulky to me but he needs to be able to back up his lap top.

Add Victoria, BC to the list. During our Pacific Northwest vacation we spent a couple of days in beautiful Victoria when they were having a “heat wave.” Yes, it was warm (maybe 80) during the day, but at night it was quite chilly (for Texans) and yes, the patios were packed.

In New England if its in the 60’s we are excited and outside. Like cave dwellers we start to come out in droves. congrats to analysts’ son and fingers crossed for those looking. D did not get a job so will have to giveup her internship. she was bummed but is looking for next fall. I was proud of her for getting that far.

Yesterday, the envelope I’ve been waiting for arrived: “Congratulations! You have been accepted to ____ County College.” Now we can get Son registered for summer school and in a while, fall classes.

If you had told me two years ago that I would be anxiously awaiting Son’s admission into community college…

I know, I know. I was never an over the top College Confidential parent with Ivy stars in my eyes. But I got “into” the search and admission process and totally thought that getting a college degree somewhere was a no-brainer.

On occassion I’ll read the posts of the '10 parents and they all think the same thing. Why shouldn’t they? They’ll have their casualties (hopefully, not literally), too, and some of them will be reevaluating.
