Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

lol, cd. it’s all good as long as i don’t bump into my dad in one of these threads. okay, i better get out of the parent forum now…

Bummer, FAP. I failed my test twice so I can relate. But I’ve never had an accident. I’m really a good driver – just one who couldn’t parallel park.

The floodgates opened here too yesterday; 12 mailings. Rhodes, UA, King’s College, William Jewell (whom my DD swears is stalking her  Marquette, and I don’t remember who else, because all but three were recycled before I got home. I did have her look at the letters though; some were the same generic text as last year, but there were a few that did allude to the fact that she would probably be NMSF. She got about 5 more today. In some ways, we’re lucky that she’s worked on her list in the past week and she’s pitching a bunch of the mailings without even opening them. Of course, I want her to read any letters that mention possible scholarships :)

Is anyone else getting phone calls from Converse College?
RobD

Oh FAP, I’m sorry. That stinks.

This made me giggle.

Wow, I’m glad Delaware equates passing practical Driver’s ed to passing the DMV road test–I couldn’t have passed anything “for real” when my teacher (barely) passed me for the practical. Have gotten a lot better over the past 6 months, but I still can’t parallel park.

Anyone getting recruiting telephone calls? My son got one Monday from State U, where he is a dual-enrollment student. I picked up the phone, and heard a young woman who I would guess is a current undergraduate herself. I told her how to reach my son by cell phone, and he later told me the conversation included his telling her that he was familiar with the campus because he is taking classes there right now, and her asking him his test scores, and his interests and activities. So far, so good.

Tokenadult,
S1 got a couple of calls junior year, also from the flagship. He also received calls prior to admissions decisions from students at schools where he had applied. S found them mostly annoying, as he didn’t have much to ask the people on the other end of the line.

My DD and I were talking colleges tonight. She had just come up with an interesting college as shopping analogy system for colleges:

Top Schools (Reach) = Anthropology

Medium Schools (Match) = American Eagle

Lower schools (Safety) = H&M

No Way = some goth store at the mall whose name is escaping me.

We were discussing Willamette and she says - American Eagle… at which time the phone rings and guess who is there :)

Oh, so true! Was the goth store Hot Topic, perchance?

That’s it… Hot Topic… I won’t say which school is in that bucket already… :)

BTW - Juicy apparently is also in the Hot Topic bucket… “no one wears those other than freshman for the first two days of school”

Sometimes its tough being a dad :)

What a great idea. I love it when kids are creative and funny to add some comic relief to what can be a very stressful process.

What is H & M? I am bad with initials. I am forever lost on this site with all of them.

Good morning, all.

FindAPlace - sorry about your son’s road test, but as you all know, my D has had the same experience - on more than one occasion! She’ll be trying again in the spring. But yes, parallel parking has been one of her biggest problems as well. Good luck to him on his next time around. Sorry too about the budget problems - so frustrating because there isn’t much you can do about that situation.

scualum - cute analogy. The only problem is that some of those “H&M” schools cost as much as the “Anthropologie” schools!

Good luck to your DD on her road test! Hope she has better luck than either my D or FAP’s S.

tokenadult - the only call D’s received recently was from Temple (2X), but she didn’t speak to them, I did. The guy said they’d call back, and that they want to talk to her about visiting the campus. Last year, Sacred Heart called, but she never spoke to them either as she wasn’t home and they never tried back.

Booklady - good to your S on his road test as well. Make sure he practices his parallel parking as that seems to be an issue for some of our kids. ;)

whirledpeas - H&M is the name of a store, but I have no clue what it stands for - that’s what it’s called.

H&M stand for Hennes & Mauritz. Wikiipedia says:

The company was established in V

So to quote my daughter -

H&M makes very nice clothes - ones that I am happy to buy and wear - but not my first choice. I can shop there and be happy with what I buy.

American Eagle is a cut above - I really like to shop there - and they have great jeans that really fit me nicely.

Anthropology on the other hand, those clothes are fabulous. I can’t afford to shop there often - and when I do, I head straight to the sale rack - but everything there is top of the line.

Sure sounds like safety, match and reach to me…

Ah, this is where the fun analogy breaks down. Can anyone point me to the sales rack at Brown University, my D’s current dream school?

astromom - that was my point - no sales rack at colleges - at either end of the spectrum.

Oh, but wouldn’t that be nice. Savvy shoppers could find the hidden sales rack and save a bundle…

Btw… we’re almost to 3,000 posts! Shhh… ;)

I guess, you can equate financial/merit aid to a sales rack, if that’s not carrying the analogy too far.
