Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

and historymom has twins, so you can cut her post count in half to be posts per child and probably put her in line with the other posters (I didn’t check, but just wanted to comment) Now I need to wait a few more seconds to post this outside the time limit, la la la…

Pulp Fiction is one of my favorites - well, except for the scenes where I have to close my eyes. H and I just watched Memento, which he had never seen before. Now he hates me because he’s going to be spending lots of time trying to figure it out, something which is basically impossible. (Has anyone here seen it?)

never mind… not gonna happen

As for senior activities:

1) Disneyland trip
2) Graduation day breakfast
3) Post graduation Grad night party (sober)
4) Prom
5) Senior Ditch Day

Thats what I can remember from DS (08)

I loved Memento. I thought the structure of telling the story backwards really worked in understanding what it would be like to live with no longterm memory. It’s funny because the only other movie I’ve seen that tells the story backwards (Betrayal) I hated.

D takes the SAT next Saturday and then we head off for a 1 week tour of colleges of the northeast. The list is so ‘reachy’ it is kind of embarrassing: Harvard, Brown, Vassar, Princeton, Penn, Swarthmore, Hopkins and Georgetown. Any tips for where to stay/eat while near these campuses?

I’ll wave to you vicarious, but I don’t have tips for you sorry.

We watched Memento recently. D had seen it during the psych class she took a few summers ago and she bought it for herself, and we all just got around to watching it recently. I thought it was very interesting. I will need to watch it again.

re prom- were discussing this yesterday with D who says she is going, it is too soon for people who aren’t already couples to ask each other, and also she commented that she will never get to go to an after prom party because there is a crew race the next morning. I was not crushed when I heard this. We will have to do the dress shopping thing at some point, I looked at the prices of some in the 09 thread and I gasped.

vicarious parent - that’s a lot of schools to visit on one trip! Have a great time. And my D has a few of those schools on her list too, and her list is similarly reachy, so I know what you mean about it being kind of embarrassing. Last summer when we went to Boston, we stayed at a hotel in Medford, close to Tufts, so that doesn’t help you. When we go to DC, we normally stay at the Holiday Inn in Chevy Chase because they have free parking, and it’s near a Metro stop, but that doesn’t help you much with Georgetown since Georgetown doesn’t have a Metro stop. Sorry I couldn’t be of any help to you, but I hope you have a great time on your trip and would love to hear your thoughts on some of those schools. We’ll be visiting a few of them over D’s spring break in April.

jackief - it’s true - the prices of prom dresses is ridiculous - but they do come in a wide range of prices. The alterations can be very pricey too, btw. Last year, D went to her bf’s prom, and her dress was about $350, plus $130 in alterations! The cost of the alterations bothered us a lot more than the cost of the dress. All she really needed was a hem and some straps taken in, but since they were charging so much, we had them fix some minor imperfections with the dress as well (it was the seamstress who works for the store, and that was the price, no matter what). The most expensive dress she tried on was $480, and they were willing to give us a 10% discount - woohoo! That was just a little too much. No junior prom at D’s school, and since she doesn’t have a bf this year, I’m guessing no prom for her.

LIMOM, I don’t want to speak too soon, but at this point I say there is no way we are paying those prices for a dress. We’ll see what we can find, won’t go out shopping until April.

I’m glad others posted here, I had one more thing to say but didn’t want to do three posts in a row. You know what those 09ers would say!! I read FAP talking about the swim meet, (good luck, FAP’s S!) and talking about how chilly it was and I realized they were swimming OUTSIDE! That boggles my mind as I look at the snow outside here. As FAP said, we are living on different planets, some of us… At least the air temps are warmer this weekend and we are having some melting, but still a lot of the ski season left.

Rats! Looks like I missed out on a wild 'n crazy Friday night on the 2010 thread.

Same here for S, except different schools next month: Bucknell, F&M, Dickinson, and Lafayette. Only one true match is scheduled: St. Mary’s of Md.

This might be my only post today. It’s a big day!

WE PICK UP BATMAN AT 12:30!!! Our new 8-week-old black lab for 9th grade D!

Oh, and get this: D is invited to a last minute bday party tonight 6PM - 10PM. So I’m already babysitting!! ;)

Hey, Batman!

jackief - well, I have to admit, I didn’t pay that price for the dress either - it was grandma’s treat. What we’ll do about her own prom next year, I have no clue.

There are definitely less expensive dresses - at department stores and maybe some local shops, but usually not at the stores that specialize in prom dresses (well, maybe $200 dresses, but that’s still a lot of money). Not sure when your D’s prom is, but remember that if the dress needs alterations, you have to allow time for that - and if you go at that time of year, they’re very busy because of proms and weddings. And when we had D’s dress altered, it needed to be redone because they did a terrible job - and when you’re paying that much for alterations, they should at least be well-done. Good luck to your D. It’s fun shopping for dresses, but those shops can get pretty crazy! I know they have dresses online at good prices, but I couldn’t imagine D ordering her dress without trying it on first.

And you’re right, the thought that FAP’s S was swimming outside this week does make it seem like we’re on different planets. We’re lucky - most of our snow melted yesterday. That’s the good thing about a March snowstorm - things get back to normal relatively quickly on LI and in NYC. Hard to believe there’s still a lot of the ski season left - I am so ready for spring!

DougBetsy - yay for getting Batman! I know you’ll love him! And I believe we’ll be visiting at least one of the colleges on your list with D on her trip in April. Would like to squeeze F&M in too, but don’t think that’ll happen.

well I can sew, not saying I am super skilled but I could probably handle basic alterations. Not sure how we will handle splitting the cost, we contributing a set amount or a percentage, will probably see what ball park we are in first. And we will start at department stores, I hope to stay far far away from bridal shops.

I got my wedding dress at the Filene’s Basement “running of the brides” for $175.

yay on Batman, DougBetsy, I guess it would be hoping too much to get a link to a picture. But we will look forward to your numerous  updates.

Will be interested in hearing what you think of St Mary’s of MD, we have received their mail and I have told D it is not a Catholic school, it seems like it might be a good school to add to her list, the ocean proximity is a plus although she isn’t into sailing but other water sports.

Good for you, jackief, to get your wedding gown for $175! D wore a $10 dress from Sears (clearance rack) for her elementary school graduation event and a $50 dress from Annie Sez for her middle school graduation. I really hope her h.s. prom dress is not too crazy expensive.

well vp, if you keep up the “5 times more expensive” trend it might be $250! Do any of you New Englanders know what I’m talking about at Filene’s Basement? SLUMOM?

I’ll definitely keep you posted. But note, St. Mary’s isn’t really near the ocean. It’s located near where the Potomac River joins the Chesapeake Bay.

Oh, have fun with the new Batman dog. How did you choose the name? Selecting names for pets is always a fun activity in our house.

S will be doing more studying this weekend as next week he also takes the SAT. And round two of the drivers’ test on Monday.

Yes, with heated pools, one can swim outside in SoCal in the winter. For those of us who have a hankering to ski in the snow, we must pay the price. So we’ll be taking a three day ski trip to Mammoth Mt. in two weeks.

S shows no inclination to want to go to proms. Not that kind of guy, at least not yet. He does socialize in groups with girls in club activities and such. It’s not a worry. I didn’t date much in HS and the guy I dated attended another HS in another city (I met him on the debate circuit.) I sometimes find it amusing to know that the guy ended up being a computer science prof, and I’m married to a math prof. Guess I’m attracted to eggheads.
