Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

I agree our old back in the day year books were much better done. These now days have such tiny pics and tiny fonts that you can’t see or read anything. I also agree about the giant one person pics vs. small 50 people pics not making any sense. I was so mad at S’s year book a couple years ago that I took it up there and showed the current class myself what is unacceptable. ;)

Our insurance company is more on the ball with this than we are (first time for a major crash.) Yesterdayn, we had a Fed Ex envelope on the step with all the forms to fill out. The replacement check they will provide is most reasonable. Plus, our friend who caused the crash sent us $1,000 to cover our deductible.

The fun thing about the Internet is that friends and relatives from far away can actually help with this stuff. So we sent my BIL pics of the damage (he rebuilds cars and trucks and did demo derby) and got hints on how to buy a used car. My Sis, meanwhile, found the best (so far) private party offering on Craigslist at a location less than 50 miles from the house. They live in WA and we’re in CA.

We still had two others cars, so it’s been poor S who’s been the odd man out without a car, merely two months after he got his wings with his driver’s license. So needless to say, he is chomping at the bit for us to get a move on and resolve this. I had to remind him he was rather privledged to have wheels at his disposal and parents who can pay the insurance bill.

S finished up last week but the school just called saying Gov’t has summer assignments and a current events test their first day back next year. S’s classmate has already gone out to the wilderness (literally) so won’t have access to any media. He’s not coming back all summer and won’t even be back for the pre-school activites. I don’t know how that’s going to work. Maybe care packages with the textbook, a sprial, and newspapers? You’d think they could have informed the students about this before school let out as I’m sure there will be several who won’t know a thing about it.

FAP - so sorry about the car crash and your S’s inconvenience, but I’m very glad nobody was hurt. And yay for the insurance company responding so promptly. Good luck finding a “new” car.

nunya - poor kids who left town without knowing about that assignment. D still hasn’t received any summer AP assignments, so I’m not sure what she has to look forward to this summer.

Bengalmom - hope the guy from CB gets you the answer you’re looking for soon. And that he fixes your S’s account. Weird how these things get messed up sometimes.

CD & Zoosermom - my D is still finishing up end-of-the-year projects, but I’m not sure how many, or for which classes. AP Stat and AP English for sure. She just handed in a final math research paper yesterday.

FAP - Chiming in w/‘condolences’ about the car and all the inconvenience! Hope everything ‘sorts out’.
GS still very busy w/end of year obligations - and then there’s the Math 2 coming up in June.
Things don’t look any quieter when school ends as work is a big obligation - and trying to fit in college visits!
A long drive to MIT visit on June 23…and of course the Questbridge Conference at Yale on the 27th! Busy week!!

As the kids left for prom (they looked great!), I got a funny feeling… after tonight, we are started on the road of “…the last…”

Next week, it’s the last graduation that they will help at…
And the last time that they will have finals in June…
And the last time they will say “see you in August…”

I’m trying to get on board with this, as I’m afraid it will hit me like a ton of bricks… hopefully not throughout the whole senior year.

FAP, ouch! Sorry about the car.

KC, how do they give seniors finals early? Is that what you mean? Aren’t there some classes that are part senior and part junior?

Karen Colleges:

Fortunately, the end of HS links quite nicely with all the firsts that come with college life!

FAP: I am sure someone must have told you this, but just do a car fax check on any intended vehicle as it shows leans, major accidents and all the previous registered owners.

We already went through a series of “lasts” last year when we moved half-way across the country after the school year. Our D had been in the same school system since kindergarten and it was hard to say goodbye. One year later, she is still in regular contact with her old friends and has made some really close friends in the new school. It will be hard to say goodbye again next year, but I think she (and we) are a bit better prepared.

vicarious…are the skies really not cloudy all day where you are? :-)

Only if Vparent doesn’t live in the Pacific Northwet (and no, leaving off the “s” was not a typo.)

Thankfully we all have another year before all the "last"s but I’m going to have to buy stock in Kleenex. We’ve been pouring over this year’s senior pics that came out today and it’s been fun reading where all they’re headed. I do have to admit I’m a bit concerned with the ones headed off to where S is looking and since they have the same interests he’s likely to run into them. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope for the best.

S’s friends are coming over for a celebration before graduation night as that will be the last time they’ll all be together. Most of the kids here have known each other since they were scooting around in diapers. He’ll be an escort so I need to fold some kleenex for his pockets in case any girls need them.

Ok, so earlier today I wrote about my lucky duck son, who only had one final. Guess what? They get to class, and the final was CANCELED. I can’t believe it. How am I ever going to prove to him that things don’t always go your way if they keep going his way? Argh.

Yep, finals are early for seniors, and graduation is at least a week before the last day of school for the underclassmen.

On top of D’s graduation, chances are good that we will be moving shortly after that. So, it really will be the last time she/we see some of these kids.

YDS - take the lucky breaks when you get them, and be happy for them - that’s all I can say about it. :D

LOL, YDS, your son sounds like my oldest!! Then there’s the next boy, in 8th grade, who DOESN’T get the lucky breaks. It’s been that way since he was tiny. Very odd!

Our school system, in its infinite wisdom, has reversed its position THIS WEEK on no finals for kids who took AP/IB exams. Teachers and students are most unhappy. Most of the teachers are making it a minimal project (except the English department, who thinks students take no other classes).

S2 has busted his butt this quarter to pull an A in Spanish (the first one in five years of study) on the assumption that there’d be no exam (and with no exam, a B 3rd quarter and a A 4th quarter = A for the semester). Now he’s going to have to sweat an essay exam. %$#@!!!

wow interesting on the finals. just got back from the store picking up the Barron’s SAT II prep book, which seems to be the recommended one over in SAT subforum land. I guess that means she will look at it this weekend. I think History is the bigger risk, we’ll see what she does about that. Still trying to get the practice tests taken. She did say today that if she didn’t want to apply to Dartmouth, she wouldn’t need any of these SAT IIs which is the truth, but I have already paid for them so she isn’t backing out now!

hello all… just thought i’d post a nice day notice… having had so few in the past two months, it’s nice to be reminded that they are not hoaxish myths or urban legends (or is it urbans legend?).

D had her last day of school today - “moving up” ceremony in which they become official Seniors.

survived exams.
survived last minute projects assigned by over-worked teachers.
somehow saved the “B” in Geometry… a little late May miracle.

she actually went out with BF this afternoon to see a movie.
watched a little mindless television tonight before falling asleep reading mindless book.
Hooray!

I’m so relieved for her… and for all these hardworkers who are winding up the year - reflecting on successes and misses from a year of growin’ and learnin’.
(Meanwhile… I’m a teacher and I’ve got another week left! Ack!)
