<p>Woot, congrats to RobD’s D! Like PMK, I’ve also heard nothing either way. School has been canceled for the school district tomorrow, so at most I’ll have a half day; still waiting to see if my charter school will cancel as well.</p>
<p>Having survived “mild” Canadian winters, I think the Mid-Atlantic is wimpy when it comes to snow. :D</p>

<p>School has been canceled for the county tomorrow. I read Keilexandra’s post and I thought it would be a good time to check on mine. We are supposed to get up to 10 inches on Tuesday night.</p>
<p>Just found out that tomorrow I’m having day surgery. If I post nonsense after about noon, I’m blaming it on the drugs! ;)</p>
<p>Occurred to me, what’s my excuse for posting nonsense the rest of the time? :D</p>
<p>School’s cancelled tomorrow for us as well…We’re getting another 10 inches tuesday, so I’m wondering when we’ll get back…</p>

<p>Congrats to the newly minted NMFs! Crossing fingers that more auditions and interviews don’t get rearranged due to the winter weather. Crossing toes for successful surgeries and continuing recoveries therefrom.</p>
<p>S got his semster report card. All smiley except for his mark in AP English Lit (for the guy who wanted out of all lit senior year until he discovered that would result in no diploma.) He was angry, stomped his feet, slammed a door. The dogs scattered. His resulting GPA for the semester is still about a 4.5 Some kids, they’d love this grade he got in the class. For him, B is for BUMMER. </p>
<p>I’m thinking maybe he knows in his heart of hearts he didn’t quite try hard enough on a subject not his cup of tea, so that’s something he’ll have to live with. It’s not going to be any show stopper for an admission decision either, IMO. Unless physicts are now required to wax poetic in their writings …</p>

<p>^Heh, a bit like my grades this quarter! Two quarter Bs in Calc BC and Honors Physics (with the “easy” teacher); the calc grade was a 92, and that’s the one I’m actually mad at myself about. I do have an A for the semester in Calc; whereas in Physics, my only A was a 92.9 first quarter. But I’m perfectly happy with a 91 semester average in Physics, which is not at all my cup of tea. My beautiful 98 midterm grade in AP Lit, OTOH… ;)</p>
<p>I’m really glad that my school doesn’t convert numerical grades to letter grades on the report card. They provide a conversion scale but the actual numbers are printed instead of letters.</p>
<p>YDS: Yes, her list was made with NMF in mind 
Even her highest reach school (Vanderbilt) has a decent NMF merit award in comparison to other top 20 schools (of course, $5000 doesn’t do much for $52000 but that’s a whole other story.)</p>
<p>And good luck with the day surgery. Ugh. </p>
<p>Speaking of Vandy, I just read another thread that linked to their admissions blog. ED II letters went out on Saturday (I don’t think they were expected till 2/15) and based on the numbers posted on the blog, I think there’s going to be a number of kids we know who are going to be disappointed. Apps way up; mid scores seem to have gone up too. Crazy stuff this admissions year. I thought last year was supposed to be the weird year & that 2010 would be better. Here’s hoping that for 2013 :)</p>
<p>And can I just say that I can’t believe that some of you are now expecting another foot of snow…just looked at the weather sites (as they’ve just issued a winter weather advisory for us; I can’t figure out why) and Wednesday in the Mid Atlantic looks wicked.</p>
<p>Keil: if you think people are winter wimpy in the northeast, you should come visit the south when it flurries :)</p>

<p>Even if this were true, colleges are not trade schools and the college years are not apprenticeships. They are some of the most memorable and formative years of our lives in areas completely aside from our professions. Lifelong friendships, intellectual challenges, exposure to things we never otherwise dreamed of… these all go well beyond the classroom side of university life. If one can afford it, then the LAC or highly competitive private university will enrich one’s life in ways the more “average” school probably will not. An analogy would be the month long trip through the cultural centers of Europe versus a weekend at the pool at the Holiday Inn. If you can afford the former, which of those two is going to be remembered 10 years from now, or even 50 years from now? Not the greatest analogy, but you see my point.</p>
<p>Sigh, only a dusting predicted in Maine! Not fair. The place that can DEAL with the snow isn’t getting it.</p>
<p>Even though we weren’t in the storm, our airport was affected. DH’s plane to LaGuardia was delayed three hours this morning, so that the crew could get their required rest.</p>
<p>I took DS to the pediatrician to talk about his running injury. The ped referred us to an orthopedist, whom we’ll see Thursday. In the meantime, the coach is telling DS to be careful and just ride the stationary bike at the Y.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, I seem to be the point person for contacting an attorney to see if the RR that crosses our private road can force us to sign an onerous RR crossing agreement. Sigh. Why does it have to be me?? I tried to ignore the situation, but now the RR representative is e-mailing me “friendly” reminders that we need to resolve this sooner rather than later. Sorry to vent, I’m just grumpy today!</p>

<p>fallenchemist, Excellent points. I’ll also add that teachers often go onto other fields in education that require graduate school. Of course she can be prepared for that at a state school but coming from a competitive school can only help, I would think.</p>
<p>Just got the phone call, PMK Jr. is a National Merit Finalist! We are excited!!! Two of his top schools offer a lot of merit aid via competitive NFM scholarships. Here we go!</p>

<p>Regarding your desire for the white stuff … you know the saying, be careful what you wish for! I prefer to keep mine in the mountains, where I can visit it to ski, an arrangement that’s doable in SoCal.</p>
<p>Meanwhile in college news, H is gearing up to be on a scholarship panel interview.</p>
