Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Oh no! I am the pot calling the kettle black and didn’t even realize it! I have the “drippings” and poor off grease in a can by the sink - I am SO BAD! I’m probably totally grossing out my kids and it never crossed my mind.

momsings - Neil Young coming to key arena November 10th I sent you a pm on pre-sale tix

Compost? We compost. Have a red wiggler worm bin too. Homemade granola? check. Homemade yogurt? Have done, but not often. Chickens in the yard? We really want to get a couple ducks or chickens but are probably a couple years away from being ready. All in our conventional suburban neighborhood. For us it’s not so much a movement toward independence from society. It’s more that we like digging in the dirt and growing veggies and flowers and the taste of homemade granola and not wasting stuff. It gives us the same happy feelings we get at the beginning of a walk into the woods - ahhhh…peace and a connection to nature.

“It gives us the same happy feelings we get at the beginning of a walk into the woods - ahhhh…peace and a connection to nature.”

I’m a little disappointed. With a username like yours, I was expecting the “ahhh” from a first sip! ;)

Seems totally appropriate to be reading this last page or so having just picked up our CSA order for the week. And yeah we compost. When we bought out house our realtor was apologetic that there was no garbage disposal. We just shrugged and ordered a compost bin (no real place to start a more random pile at this house).

Saintfan and momsings - The friends I have in mind are strong libertarians who believe in less govt, no war, forced immunizations not acceptable (HPV horror stories posted every other day), pasteurization requirement not acceptable if buyer wants it that way, and have plenty of hens running around. When they were in college with me, they were the hippie type.

So they have covered the bottom to top on your pyramid?

It’s OK, saintfan, they don’t realize how much better the drippings make everything!

When we moved from Berkeley, we were surprised at how little people recycle in our area. Normally we would do twice the amount to recycle than to throw away. I draw the line at granola, simply because it is too healthy for me ;)

OK MizzBee - I just purchased American Idiot tix for D for Birthday - going on Sunday - 8th row and not purchased at a premium. DS gave me courage and said that she will love it.
“Well, let’s see . … . she loves Green Day and she loves musicals. Of course she’ll love it!”

I have another confession - these dripping are not for reuse as flavoring. These are actual garbage - poured off fat from ground beef and saut

texaspg - You have a winner! Of course, raw milk is likely not the vanishing point at the top, but I’m too conventional to know what that might be ;)

Oops hit send too soon and can’t edit on my phone. Went with S to pick up his tux for prom. He wanted a blue/teal bow tie but they gave him a regular tie and vest. We swapped them out for a black tie and cummerbund. Not crazy about the blue anyway. His date’s dress is black on the top anyway so it will look good. Just like the tux he wore for my cousin’s wedding when he was 5. Awwwww.

"DS is one of 2 that has been cast in all 17 productions in 4 years. " - Mizzbee

Wow! What an amazing accomplishment. What a run! - bittersweet to see him move on, I am sure.

Chicks and worm bins aside: Today we received an invitation to the Senior Awards night next week. It looks like S is up for some sort of award–nice!! We’re on the final stretch–last day for seniors is next Thursday, Friday is the graduation rehearsal and Saturday is the ceremony!! Woohoo!

Finally put a few pics of DS up on the Fickr site. More eventually! So much happening, so many good things going on. Congrats to all…

Sounds great! I’ll share my recent award-ceremony-awry experience. D’s high school has the year-end academic awards ceremony during the school day. She never received an award at this ceremony in grades 9-11, so I don’t know what the usual drill is for parents. This year we received a notice about parking for the awards ceremony, hand-addressed to “The parents of D” and handed to D at school. The notice about parking said the information had been omitted from the preceding notice to parents of award recipients, but that due to the major construction going at the school, here are the parking arrangements for parents attending the ceremony…

We were perplexed by this notice as we had not received the preceding notice that it mentioned. Quizzed D and she said oh yes, parent notices had been distributed to students who would be receiving awards, a couple of days prior. No, she definitely had not received such a notice, could not have missed it.

So, I phoned the school. Spoke to D’s GC, who checked the list of award recipients and said, no, D does not appear to be on it. I was a bit perplexed and irked. H said it was par for the course and he couldn’t wait for D to be outta that school.

D did win the 12th grade science award, but we weren’t there to see her receive it. She was absolutely thrilled, and that’s the main thing…

Well I never said the bottle of pinot doesn’t accompany me out to the compost pile and back. ;)

Last soccer practice was as expected. Girls had a blast, one of my favorite players is going to miss the game so we said our goodbyes tonight. Her parents gave my co-coach one of those Shutterfly photobooks that had pictures back to kindergarden.

Came home from practice to find that our cat has somehow gotten out and is missing, hopefully he will re-appear in the morning

Sending good thoughts for your cat, jmnva06. That is so stressful and worrisome. I’ve done that waiting up for our cat who sneaked out late and it’s like waiting for a child to get in.

weatherga - I am sorry you missed your D’s award, that’s just frustrating and disappointing. Congratulations on the science award.

Speaking of ven diagrams, DS15 emailed this across the room to me last night

momsings: after much consideration I have decided on Jack White
