Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Twelve Days of Decisions:

On the tenth day of decisions, S13 said to me:

“What if I change majors?”

“Sorry, I’m too busy”
“They need more trees on campus”
“It isn’t really Hogwarts”
“I kinda like the city”
“STOP Nagging Me!”
“Do they have my major?”
“Silly mascot”
“Too many loans!”
“But Mom, I still love my safety…”

More Cardigans? Sure. This one seems to fit the mood around here.

[I</a> Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need To be Nicer - YouTube](<a href=“I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need To be Nicer - YouTube”>I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need To be Nicer - YouTube)

aww Greek prayers for your Mother in law. My husband is from rural India and has had similar situations with family members when it came to emergency medical care. What would be a routine procedure here, was next to impossible to get help for where he was from. The nearest hospital with even modest accommodations, was a 2 day journey.
Healing thoughts for those recovering from the “evil dentist” work.

Orchestra senior graduation party today . I’ve hardly been this year since the kids are driving, but I still feel like I’m gonna miss it!

Another lurker coming on board…I was scuba diving in the depths…D finally clicked the yes button. I was really hoping for Iowa State, but she chose to ride the Green Wave at Tulane!

Same story here. U Chicago is the only school he has not declined yet, is doing so today :frowning: Not only does he have to write a note to the admission officer, but also to the foundation that offered him the scholarship. Tough…but a learning experience.

He was actually a little down the day after he declined majority of his schools. He said that it is difficult to say no to so many wonderful schools. I am sure I shared this here already but I will repeat - I LOVED DS’s sentiment when he said “There were a few schools out there that accepted us, and what do we do in return? We reject them…”
Besides U Chicago Yale was a difficult one to write the note to, because of a very personal relationship he has developed with the admission rep. Personal letters, telephones, long discussions about his essays. But that admission officer turned out to be a wonderful person. Wrote back to him really fast, saying that he had to make a tough choice etc. again with some nice, personal touches.

@Greek - sending prayers and good thoughts all the way to the land of Hellada
While stressful, I am sure your DH is actually glad you are there at this difficult time!

A warm welcome to cyclonehome!

Congrats to the posters and lurkers. Greek - sending my very strongest healing vibes.

UCh ica go - we were in the same boat and seems to be a trend around here. S’13 loved the place and sending the note to decline was very hard. He has it at the top of the list for graduate school (not that we are rushing things in any way).

Assassination update. Both D1 and the kid she was supposed to kill are now deceased. D1 is still helping a couple of living friends, but our “shelter in place” order seems to have been lifted.

There’s no 24-hour surveillance of our house anymore, at least, and I don’t have to check the car for strangers with water guns before anybody gets in. Just a couple of kids I don’t know sleeping in the den. (I hope D1 knows them.)

Wow now I feel even worse for passing on U C h i c a g o with 3 here doing the same. D13 read me her personal letter to her admissions rep with Barber Adagio for Strings playing in the background… (she tends to use her sense of humor to cope when she’s emotional). I’m wearing the T-shirt they sent to us right now. It’s like breaking up with a longtime boyfriend, that was always kind and did nothing wrong.

I was deciding what to do with all the gear that UChicago sent parents - and my D swooped in and grabbed it all up. She still wants to wear it.

Devil Child is still wearing gear from several of the roads not taken, but he didn’t apply anywhere that sent out out free swag. We will have to fix that when DS15 comes through the process.

Send along some of the gear to us folks who don’t have kids who had a shot in hell of getting in U Chicago.

My kid opened the supplement to Chicago 2 years ago and saw “Define X” as the essay prompt, and promptly clicked out. LOL.

finalchild - my D answered “so where is waldo really”. Probably better than “what about Wednesday”.

Just think how happy your kids made some kids on the UChi cago waitlist! I’ve been thinking of that school as a good choice for S15 but after two years at boarding school in Wales he may be looking for warmer college venues ;)

Yeah, why does it have to be so freaking cold in Chicago, anyhow?

Feh.

After two winters in Wales, actual snow could be a nice change of pace from 40 and raining.

I don’t know. As many of us in New England can often be heard to say, “You don’t have to shovel rain.”

OTOH, I guess college students generally don’t have to do much shoveling (of snow, I mean).

No closer to a decision.

I thought we were done (Bama Bound) unless we hit the lottery by Tues and could pay the Pitzer costs, but then Trinity U upped the grant offer…

This has been a roller coaster and I just want to put a magnet on the car.

I was talking to a mom of an 11th grader. Any of you who looked at MIT/CalTech willing to give some pm advice to this family? If so, please pm me. Student is looking for pure math major.

And you can’t sled in wet grass with trays liberated from the cafeteria.

Note to student lurkers: I am NOT condoning stealing trays from the cafeteria. (Well, maybe. At my school, they put the cracked ones out for the taking on the first snow day so we would leave the good ones in the dining hall.)

If anyone wants to give up their service shift, I’m looking to pick up an extra…remember though, I don’t serve in roller skates! I don’t need to be any taller and am just not that coordinated! I could use a distraction…the random music has been great, SOG.
State qualifiers for band and choir today…kids sang really well and we await decision tomorrow…unfortunately, the three kids who are going to state for ss academic team next sat (2 are mine) are in the concert choir and the third is in band SO all are stressed about logistics if, as predicted, both band and choir qualify…at least an hour travel between competitions with no traffic and I think it may be move out weekend at the university where the academic comp is scheduled
I just want them to be excited about all the successes without the stress of scheduling and potentially having to miss something…there is little chance that all 3 kids are going to be able to do everything which is sad…will be glad when we know tomorrow just how fast I am going to have to drive😀…I guess I should look at the bright side…my other daughters english team almost made it too…I’m good but I’m not THAT good! There would have been NO chance that all mine would be able to do both.
So, in the interim, the bar will be open late as I won’t sleep well…
Greekmama: All three from me too , I agree that your DH must be so relieved you are there.
