Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Call me na

After an exhausting week touring colleges back east and in the northwest with DD, I can finally stop lounging and start serving: DD is going to Wellesley, and DS to Wheaton! They’ll be just an hour apart, one airport, and I am so relieved!

It’s been nearly impossible trying to keep up with all of you, but congratulations to all those with decisions. Hope your MIL improves quickly, Greek.

Greek - hope your MIL improves quickly!!

Wherenext - she hasn’t decided yet, but it’s pretty much between MIT & Olin. We’ll know Wednesday.

Nothing like being down to the wire.

LOL!

carimama,

wish I could help. The worm and his roommate were Caltech UG, MIT grad. I know a lot about those schools, but only saw Olin once.

pkdof13,
Congrats to both mini-pk’s. I’ve known happy Wheaton students, and Wellesley was my first academic job; I loved being there.

Yes, Kennedy, I thought we were anonymous here, too. In fact, I was confused as to why posters were using spacing between the letters of the school name and thought it was some kind of insider code. HaHa. Then I thought it was so those doing a search on CC couldn’t learn what was being said about the school. I think this is the only place where using the spaces would result in not showing up in the search. So I thought it was to protect one’s privacy on this forum. Color me c o n f u s e d.

…

I think the s p a c i n g thing is as stupid as saying DD and DS.

Agree on the DD and DS. I have to constantly stop myself when I read DS, and translate it to son. Because I see the D first, I automatically think daughter, but alas, it’s a son. Son is only one letter longer than DS. Plus, you don’t have to hit the shift key, so to me it’s a lot easier just to type son. If only I had a son instead of a daughter!

For me, using DD reinforced me remembering that my daughter truly is “dear” or “darling” at a stressful time in life when nerves are frazzled and tempers are short. Let’s face it, the whole college thing is a challenge particularly when dealing with teenagers (gotta love them!)

There are days when that D stands for something completely different.

And for all of us whose kids seem to have a dinner every other day right now, I offer up this:

[Bloc Party - Banquet - YouTube](<a href=“Bloc Party - Banquet - YouTube”>Bloc Party - Banquet - YouTube)

All you have to do is click on a person’s user name and you can see everything they have posted…with or without spaces  I actually thought is was some sort of “game” you all were playing.

Twelve Days of Decisions:

On the eleventh day of decisions, S13 said to me:

“You know I hate the city”

“What if I change majors?”
“Sorry, I’m too busy”
“They need more trees on campus”
“It isn’t really Hogwarts”
“I kinda like the city”
“STOP Nagging Me!”
“Do they have my major?”
“Silly mascot”
“Too many loans!”
“But Mom, I still love my safety…”

Sorry the song was late - turns out I was melancholy partly because I was coming down with a head cold :(. Sunday in bed helped very much, though.

I have given up trying to mask the college name because I keep forgetting. On the other hand, if I have 200 posts that mention Notre Dame, hopefully whoever is googling will get bored and go away.

momofmusician - good for you! And what a fun thing to be part of – hopefully you’re already in bed :).

Also, I’m sure your S was a brilliant choice for a first date!

Congrats Mom2kids2dogs!

Congrats on Wellesley and Wheaton, pkdof13!! Yay for one airport!

I think for some it was also avoiding a jinx - particularly before decisions came out. Certainly none of us wants even the slightest hint that it was mom or dad’s fault… ;).

I just posted this question regarding drop-off on an NU forum and would like to hear from anybody here with advice too:

My daughter will be starting at NU as a freshman this fall and we’ll be flying out from Boston to drop her off. The thing is, her younger sister (13) will already have begun school (8th grade), as will, presumably, nearly all the younger sibs in America. That being the case, we expect that, while there’ll be stuff for the parents to do (in addition to shopping for dorm things), there won’t be much for sibs to do, and nobody around her age there.

One month later, is “family weekend,” which I guess will have more activities for brothers and sisters, and, of course, is on a weekend, rather than during school days. That seems more sibling-friendly, but it also seems weird to do the drop-off without everybody there, even if school will be missed and there might be significant boredom.

Anyhow, we’re looking for advice from anybody who’s been to both of these events in past years. Have to start shopping for plane tix pretty soon, and possibly arranging for somebody to host the younger daughter, if she’s not going to the “Welcome.” Thanks!

We’ve never taken younger sibs to move-in, and in fact only one parent goes. (The other is home with the siblings!) I’ve done a mix of visiting on family weekends and on other weekends–the family weekends are fun, but small towns get crowded, some hotels jack up their prices, . . . . I figured the point (especially after freshman year) was to see the kid, not to see the school, so was fine with choosing another weekend to visit in the fall. In the spring, I often took a younger sib along–they get to see a college campus and do some one-on-one time with the college kid.

Twelve Days of Decisions:

On the twelfth day of decisions, S13 said to me:

“Relax, mom, I’ve got this”

“You know I hate the city”
“What if I change majors?”
“Sorry, I’m too busy”
“They need more trees on campus”
“It isn’t really Hogwarts”
“I kinda like the city”
“STOP Nagging Me!”
“Do they have my major?”
“Silly mascot”
“Too many loans!”
“But Mom, I still love my safety…”

Finally getting around to adding DS to the list, even though he went ED! Now we have 2 Bucknellians on the list.

Excellent question, tougis. Guess it’s time to start thinking about stuff like that .

I realize that we technically should have ended tomorrow. I was going to claim that I was planning on not making jokes on that day, since anyone without a decision will be taking it very seriously indeed. However, I think I either miscounted or posted two in a day somewhere along the way :(. But, we can go with the no-joking-tomorrow thing if everyone’s cool with that…

And, I’m serving Cuban coffee in tiny little cups this morning for all those who need to be alert for decisions… and those who served too enthusiastically :D.

I already have a musical selection in mind for tomorrow, so we have that part covered.

As for the Cuban coffee, yes, please. I’ll have about six of them.

And, to start the day, a little weather-inspired Goth.

[Rain – The Cult](<a href=“The Cult - Rain (Official Music Video) - YouTube”>The Cult - Rain (Official Music Video) - YouTube)

Since I am late this morning - I will offer some chocolate donuts to accompany Confetti’s Cuban coffee. Sugar and caffeine…

tougis – Freshman move-in for my daughter was hot and very crowded (bodies, boxes, shelving-assembly-in-progress, etc.) D’s school (not NU) did not have any programming that would have been of interest to siblings – more things for parents like financial and safety stuff.

I think that Family Weekend will be a lot more fun for the sibling, and your college student will be a lot less stressed by then too.
