Good morning! Congratulations on all the great decisions!!! And to be done (except of course those waiting on the WLs). I guess if we are talking rivalries Greek and Critter are mine (DS was told to leave all red colored clothes home). Go Bears!

T-shirt: Although I think the kids have been wearing the shirts and sweatshirts a lot, they have an official “college recognition” assembly at the end of May. I was going to wear mine today but it is a “yoga shirt” and would probably not be too appropriate for work.

WL: I guess a kid got off the UCLA waitlist by launching a twitter campaign. Interesting. DS was asked if he wanted to continue to be on the CMC WL and he declined.

League finals for tennis this week, then two weeks of AP testing (and tennis matches). Busy, busy. Not thinking about Prom yet because it isn’t until June.

YDS - I’m with you on the WL. I think generally if the schools manage the acceptances and yield expectations then very few come off the WL. At the HMFR schools, that surely will be the case. DS is still on a WL for a HMFR, but it is just as if it is in a parallel universe at this point and it almost seems irrelevant. HOWEVER, I was speaking with a friend who is a private college admissions advisor who said she and her colleagues have been shocked at the number of their students on WLs, more than ever before by far. She said that she expects much more movement off the WL than in the past, as a result (domino effect) but probably not much at the “HMFR schools” (my terminology, not hers
)

Belated congrats for Stanford (x 2), Rochester, Wisconsin, Rose Hulman and Grinnell !!

Re the T shirts - we have a senior breakfast in a few weeks where the students all where the T shirts. However, DS has been proudly wearing his T shirts since deciding :)

No rivalries. All love and peace and good wishes for the class of 2013! I sound like I should be the one going to Cal!!!

You can do that peace and love stuff at your West Coast school, but out here we HATE Carolina.
(Never mind that dinner somewhere on Franklin Street or out at Allen & Sons BBQ is an important part of any proper trip to the Triangle.)

^^Yikes! I have a lot to learn about those devils! Maybe we can go for a drink at the BBQ place. Do they have vegetarian options?

This book is a fun place to start learning about the rivalry – even if it was written by a Heel.

[Amazon.com: To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever: A Thoroughly Obsessive, Intermittently Uplifting, and Occasionally Unbiased Account of the Duke-North Carolina Basketball Rivalry (9780060740245): Will Blythe: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Hate-Like-This-Happy-Forever/dp/0060740248)

And the HBO documentary “Battle for Tobacco Road” also is pretty good entertainment.

Great Books, great documentary, amazing rivalry! I hate you both in the most congratulatory kind of way. :D

Likewise. And we just found out that one of our friend’s children is headed to Carolina, so our local inter-family rivalry is officially a two-generation affair.

estee, you mean college counselors haven’t started using the phrase HMFR??? ;)

I agree that WLs are getting bigger, but I haven’t seen any proof that that means more kids are coming off them. I think kids are just applying to more and more schools and colleges are putting more and more of those kids on those WLs rather than denying them outright. If you really want off a WL, I’m all about the full-court press to make that happen, but I just wouldn’t count on it working.

ETA: Congrats, Lizzie!!! Another new school for the list.

YDS–I am in total agreement with you…but, tell that to my DD…she’s not quite there yet…but, I would say that her choosing to wear the Tshirt from the “deposited school” is going in the right direction…meaning, she is announcing to all her peers that she intends to go to that school!

Rivalry: I think the Cal vs Stanford rivalry is a pretty big one. My mom always worried on the day of the “Big Game” that my grandpa (Cal '28) was going to have a heart attack.

This list is AWESOME! Congratulations to all!

Swizzle - Hope you feel better! You’re impressive - taking care of business from your sick bed.

There is the most loving hatefest going on here today… you guys are funny!

SomeOldGuy - I totally blanked on Rickrolling and had to look it up. Senior moment I guess - anyway thanks for the memories. Cameron crazies look like a fun group!

Our kids all have so much fun in store no matter where their little boats will be docked. Time was dragging and now it’s just flying! We’ll soon be loading up their dingy boats and giving them a shove off… but before that it’s APs, proms (or not) either way - drama, announcements, banquets, parties, and last but not least graduation! How will we cram all of that into just a very few weeks.

I’m jealous of those with graduation early…DD13s is not until June 17th! A month after APs what were they thinking?

Today was decision day at S school. Senior are supposed to wear their college T shirts, or shirt identifying what they will be doing after graduation (military, etc). Of course S forgot, so I did make him go back and change. He seems to almost be embarrassed to announce where he is going, his school does not send a lot of kids to Ivy or highly ranked LACs, there are a lot of directional Us in there, so I think he is worried people don’t know where he’s headed.

May is the “hang on to your hat” month - prom (or not, I have one of each here), tennis Districts (S and his partner won the league doubles title!), athletic banquet, academic banquet, music banquet, music concert, tennis celebration, AP tests, finals, parties, etc etc Just have to put my head down and keep going.

Congrats to all the kids who put down the deposits this week!

drmom - at least she’s in the t-shirt - they all have to come to terms in their own way, don’t they?

S13 could have a wide variation in credits based on AP tests this year (he already has 6, could end up with as much as 28 and a place-up) – but he’s not stressed lol. More power to him.

Wow, sacchi, we’re famous :D. LOL - now EVERYONE thinks we know what we’re doing…

Turns out I heard about the t-shirt thing here and S13’s school doesn’t do it (they do it closer to graduation, which is in June). But the shirt was clean, so he wore it anyway :).

Hey swizzle - feel better!

I have to research rivalries – I have no idea who to congratu-hate!

We have a crazy month too - and now S13 and D15 have both started their summer jobs! I should complain, right?

Confetti: I think you have quite a few! I know ND plays USC every year in football and it is a BIG DEAL.

S2 doesn’t have a t shirt for his college. I suggested he get one when he visited in March and he just looked at me like I was crazy. Not that anyone around here would even know what “Westminster Choir College” is - except for music ministers!

Don’t know if I’m ready for this last month of school. Today is voting for Prom king and queen (won’t find out results til prom on Friday), tomorrow is field trip to Oklahoma to go hiking in the rain/snow for his Earth Science class, Friday is senior skip day…And so it continues. Figured out that both parents will be out of town during AP week. I’m going to trust him to get up and get to school, although I may send a wake up call. I’m not that trusting! Senioritis in full swing.

The kids love Rickrolling! D’s friend has been Rick(with huge shoulder pad blazer) for the past two years for Halloween with little speakers connected to his iphone to play the song whenever anyone asks him what he is.

Hummm…I can’t think of any rivalries USC (So Cal) would have, they are so low key and under the radar.
:D

Finally, D clicked the button last night.

Depends on the school, though. And the year.

Most schools show the waitlist data on their Common Data Set. In 2012, the University of Michigan had 4,010 applicants accept a place on the waitlist. Of those, 74 were eventually offered admission. That works out to about 1.8%. Those are pretty long odds.

In contrast, in 2011 Wellesley had 551 applicants accept a place on the waitlist, of whom 87 were eventually admitted. That’s about 16%–not terribly favorable, perhaps, but hardly trivial. But the preceding year, 2010, Wellesley accepted 0 out of 495 on the waitlist.

So you just never know. It’s not unusual for a school’s yield model to be off whenever it gets a big jump in applicants, because the new applicants may not be coming from the same demographics as in previous years. But the yield model could be off on the high side, or off on the low side. If yield is higher than expected, no one will be taken off the waitlist; they’ll be worried about where to house everyone who accepted. If yield comes in lower than expected, they may need to work the waitlist pretty intensively.

The point is, you just can’t know in advance. To that extent, I agree it’s not wise to count on it. But I also think it’s a mistake to assume the chances are going to be minimal everywhere, because that may not be the case at all schools.
