Our schools start in the second week of August in the fall and then again right after Jan 1st. The commencement ceremony isn’t until next Monday but D and I will be in Phoenix for the International Science Fair so her last official engagement with the high school is the Honors Assembly Thursday evening. They do a nice robing ceremony at the beginning so at least she will wear the cap and gown we bought! I think our Honors Assembly is very well done because they mention everyone’s name along with the school they are going to, from community colleges and technical schools to four-year colleges. Over half the class will go to the local state flagship but they still celebrate that as much as the kids going to very selective colleges. It’s fun to hear the list of schools.

Cap and gown distribution today! Hard to believe. S2 found his sister’s cap and gown and all of her medals and has decided to recycle her medals and ribbons instead of purchasing his own. I think he’s qualified for all the same awards. Love saving money!

S2 has late arrival every day this week except for day that he has AP testing (Thurs). Unfortunately for him, we’ve got painters showing up every morning at 8:30am. Oops, bad planning on our part. I told him he could sleepover at a friends house, but he’s never been one for sleepovers. But, I think he’s found a dorm roommate. A friend from YoungArts. They may not be best buddies, but he’s a known quantity and seems pretty easy going.

Almost down to the wire! So exciting to hear about commencements and awards ceremonies. Congrats everyone!

Ds brought home his graduation announcements yesterday. Now, I can’t procrastinate.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I was at the local “dollar store” yesterday and saw they had lots of cute dorm stuff for sale.

MZBikia: I was figuring that was what it was…but on the less positive reading…they don’t weed out the out of states? Or, they are just trying to be very clear on what they won’t cover. I ended up calling the program and they told me that they will keep sending out a letter, “in case your daughter does not like where she is going, she can always transfer in state and perhaps be elligible…” I guess that is good to know…

oops…mispelled your “name”–sorry!

Haha thanks youdontsay and Eastgrad :D

Picerulz- Congrats on 16 posts!

Announcements … dang it … I knew there was something I forgot to do. Thanks for keeping me on track! Now out to the party store/ printer… looks like it’s a good think DD13 graduates later. No sign of caps and gowns around here.

reeinaz… What did you get at a dollar store? I only use them to purchase gift bags and gift wrap papers. Cannot think of anything for dorm life. Tell me what are the good buys at dollar stores!!

I didn’t get anything because I have a son and everything was very girly. But they had wicker baskets with the cloth linings, color and print storage boxes and bins, cute shower curtains and window dressings and things like that. This was at a General Dollar store which isn’t really a dollar store. But I’m guessing similar stores will probably start selling that dorm stuff soon also.

Little organization boxes are good idea!

We are also a good month away from graduation. AP/IB central here :)

So nobody had to ever deffer a scholarship??? Really ???

I’ve never had to defer a scholarship. However, one of my DS’s scholarships sent information with the scholarship explaining how to defer it. S maybe call the school or department.

Just checked ds’s college e-mail, and he just got word that he won one of the small scholarships that he applied for! That’s two for four. The other two didn’t close until last week, so I don’t think they’ve been announced yet. We are almost to the goal of a super laptop!

Several years ago, when my son deferred admission to take a gap year, he had no trouble whatsoever deferring the 3 scholarships he received. You’ll need to check with the granting agency (or school) for the scholarships you want to defer.

So my DD took her AP Psych test yesterday and is also exempt from the regular exam (only available to seniors and you had to have an A all three quarters and have an A average going into the AP test). She has this class first thing in the morning (actually it is before school starts - offered as an optional 7th class). I asked her if she still needed to go to the class - and she said “I guess so”. Personally, if I was a senior I would ask the teacher. She only has 2 more weeks but that is 2 weeks of sleeping until 7 instead of 6AM. I told her to ask and she looked at me like I was crazy. I guess she can just go in late a couple days??? I guess I should be happy that she didn’t think about this but to me it seems logical. She said only about 6 girls are exempt (out of 23 in the class).

ahs, oh how I wish my ds wasn’t constantly thinking of ways to do the least amount of work possible.

Kelowna - Clearly I am not an expert on the deferral issue… so I’ll just naively ask those more experienced… Don’t you just leave the funds on deposit at the bursar’s office until he needs it even if it’s not this year? The funds just sit there until he takes a draw for something like food credit or the bookstore, right?

Our experience several years ago was that my D’s two named scholarships could not be deferred. I don’t know if the answer would have been different if they had been university scholarships.

We have good news! DD13 received an email from you-know-who! Deferral application and fee confirmed…deferral will be confirmed upon receipt of year end transcripts. Not sure why they need the transcripts for a deferral… but seems like everything is in order so far.

More good news! DD13 also just received an invitation to the Honors program. Yay! This will mean fun stuff like the honors dorm, activities, small learning activities, more face time with the profs so an opportunity to impress and garner those ever important recommendations for jobs and grad school. So excited! I was actually wondering why she hadn’t been invited but said nothing to her … not even sure she knew about the honors program and since it’s by invitation only I figured why discuss it, just so pleased she received the invite. She’s feeling quite proud of herself at the moment and rightfully so. :-)
