Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Hey 'rents!

It’s AP week here for me (APES was Monday…I think I did well! Lit’s Thursday, Stats is Friday, then I’m done!), and everything is absolutely crazy.

Today my principal told me that I will be receiving an award from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education for my leadership and involvement with my school system and district! I’ll also be awarded some scholarship money at my next Board of Education meeting because they chose my design for my school system’s new logo! They didn’t know that I was the one who designed the logo, so I did it on my own merit! I’m really happy about that. Being on the Board of Ed has many perks, but I like knowing that I did this by myself, despite having “connections.”

I’ve already done some dorm shopping…it’s really not good lol. I’ve bought virtually everything I need as far as organization is concerned. Despite not knowing what dorm I’ll be living in next year, I know that they all look practically the same at UConn, so I know what I’m working with. I didn’t get a ton of stuff because the rooms are probably the smallest rooms I’ve seen at any of the colleges I’ve visited. I do plan on making the posters I’m going to be putting up on my walls at school since I’m capable of doing so in my communications lab. I’m so excited!!!

Today I received word from UConn that because I’m a PELL Grant recipient I don’t have to pay the $300 housing deposit!!! YAY  It sounds like everything is going really well for all of you and your kids! I hope they’re not too stressed with APs and IBs!

Have a lovely evening!

That’s great news! I’m so glad she’ll be able to go on exchange. If she isn’t a member already, she’ll want to join cultures shocked forum. Congratulations on all counts!

Does anyone else have a banquet every night next week? Academic, Athletic, and music! Plus the final choir concert and something else - I will be living at the HS. Poor DD15 still has her concert and other end of year stuff that is not getting nearly the calendar space.

We have sent out grad party invitations but opted not to do announcements. We have been getting grad party invitations every day too. I am sure this has been asked but do you plan to give gifts to the senior for every party? I feel like we should just pass around the same $20 bill or something :)

No info for another week about classes, rooming etc. And S is not too concerned about dorm room shopping. I’m sure it will be a comforter and sheets and a desk lamp and laptop. Girls get all the cute organization and decorative stuff!

Not here. We had some dinners, awards, and arts events the past two weeks, but the entire school is hunkered down this week and next for APs. Our kids, including seniors, are required to take the exam in order to get HS credit for an AP class.

Next week is AP exam week for us. Then the sledding gets pretty smooth. No finals for seniors with B+ or higher avgs.

Since we don’t get out until June 20th we haven’t started the awards yet. Lots of hunkering down for APs. DS is going to a luncheon on Thursday to accept a scholarship, and the next Friday the top 10% will go to breakfast at the Chamber of Commerce. But the awards and banquets don’t start until June.

Swizzle- Congratulations on the logo selection! Money to go with it BONUS! Yay! Also it’s so nice the Board of Education is appreciating your hard work. I’m sure you’ll remember to list it on your resume. Good job young lady! I think you’re gonna rock college.

lemonmelon - is there a Facebook page for students? You could ask what other parents are doing.

congrats on the scholarship, sophieandlola! Glad prom was great.

swizzle - congrats! See, we told you you were gonna do well - we just didn’t know you’d already started :D

Oh my, tx5! I can’t imagine adding a dream school in at this point!

lol SomeOldGuy - was this an actual deaththread?

STEM - you know she wouldn’t be happy being the kid who lets other people do the work…

drmom - I think that letter is probably an answer to a random thought you had along the lines of “I wish I could stop thinking about {insert small problem here}.” Your wish was answered!

STEM, that sounds like an awesome ceremony.

megp - congrats on finding a roommate!

Woohoo on scholarships, YDS!

ahs - we will be there after next week. 4 AP tests next week, but then two weeks of school with no classes except band and gym… but gym is zero hour and starts at 6:45! So S13 has to be at school at 6:45 to run around the gym and then attend 6 study halls and band… :D. He’s still working on his music composition, so I expect that will keep him busy.

Yay, pouncecat! I know you’ve been waiting!

surf - we all consider it a “party-trade” arrangement. Gifts are for close friends or kids of our close friends, and they don’t necessarily go with the party. However, most of our (adult) friends are also economically challenged, so I’m probably not the best sample.

We have two things a week until graduation. Choir concert with NHS ceremony. Orchestra and Tri-M… like that. This week is Band concert and band awards tomorrow night (most important to me and I think to S13) and Outstanding Student of the Quarter Breakfast on Thursday :).

SomeOldGuy - how about Flashdance? “What a feeling… seems to me that… I can have it all…”

D’s s school does not do any awards, so things are pretty quiet around here except for APs, which are required in every class except Chinese, and serve also as the final exams.

so, DD changed all her passwords to the “shared” college account. I’d take that as a “I am ready to take care of all my responsibilities now”…BUT, she asked me where all the pencils and erasers are for her AP test tomorrow…AND, she wants me to wake her up because otherwise she is afraid she’ll sleep through the exam…
and I am worried, because her “deposited” school has told the kids to check the college emails for weekly information…and, when I reminded her of this she said “I DON’T have time for that…I have AP’s” (which I understand…but I am afraid there are things she has to complete this month…and because I don’t have the password…I cannot check for her)…okay, I’ve vented…anyone else feel this way? If not, please give me some reassurance or diffferent perspective! not all kids are Swizzles!! but, they are still wonderful…even though I am being driven crazy…

Scholarship thing on Friday, awards ceremony on Saturday, awards dinner on Monday. Yep, that’s my life.

Hey everyone, I have been reading everyone’s words, but haven’t written since DS got acceptance to Columbia. This week DS is very busy on his IB exams. It will last for 3 weeks. Graduation dance and dinner as well as the Dry grad will be the week after. He doesn’t have a dance partner yet.

Some of you talked about the dorm stuff shopping in dollar store. What exactly do we have to purchase in dollar store? What size of comforter should I buy? I know the bed is Twin extra long. Should I buy double comforter or twin?

Me: Is there anything you need to do for tomorrow’s BC calculus AP test? (meaning, shouldn’t you be studying???!!!)

DS13b: Yeah, show up at 7:30 tomorrow morning.

AAAAaaaaHHHhhhhh!!!

Both DS13 a&b received notification today that they are finalists for a local biotechnology scholarship. Now they have to present their work at a formal interview. It’s only 15 minutes, so it shouldn’t be a big deal. They have both already presented their work at large international conferences, so this shouldn’t be too hard. It’s just one more thing to squeeze in before the end of the year!

surf - that is a good question about the grad gifts. In years past we have been invited to 3 or 4 and I have written a check (for graduation year $20.13) for the grads. This year we will probably be invited to 20+ so not sure what we will do.

GreekMama - my dd also laid on the couch watching TV last night with bookbag not leaving her car - and had AP Calc today - oh well - it is a cumulative subject so it is kind of hard to study for - not worried about it.

I think part of the issue is that now that they know what school they are going to - they know what they need to get on the tests to use the credit - last year they didn’t know. For example - I think DD only needs to get a 3 on her Calc to get to the level math she wants - she can do that without studying!

D also has AP Calc this morning. Last night she says, “wow this has been so much good news this week” meaning that she won 1st place in her category at state science fair on Saturday, then yesterday received notification that she has qualified for a nice fat scholarship for city science fair winners. Then she says “too bad the good news streak will end tomorrow”. Referring to AP Calc…

Relax, folks! This too shall pass. As for AP Calc, the score distribution tends to be a little closer to barbel shaped (1’s and 5’s) than a traditional curve. What that suggests to me is there there’s a “you get it or you don’t” factor at play – and based on what I’ve read about most of your kids, they probably get it.

S entered college 3 years ago with 19 credits. He has proceeded to take 18 credits every semester. As a rising senior he has enrolled for 21 credits next year. Which means that he will graduate with 169 credits. He never even considered playing the get of the college early to save money card…oh well.

SomeOldGuy - your post only succeeded in making me more nervous. Seriously, 1 or 5?

But the music selection is divine…so it all evens out.

No, seriously. Relax. Last year, the top 25% of test-takers got 5’s on the AB exam, and about HALF of the kids who took BC got 5’s. Now, I know where your kid’s going to school, and I’m happy to predict that he is quite likely to be in the top quarter of test-takers nationally. Hakuna matata.

I think I’m going to have to get back on the cruise ship and have some of those drinks today. It’s day 3 of interior house painting and I think these guys have broken more things than they’ve painted. Plus painted the wrong color. Plus informed me that they won’t be done until Monday. I keep telling myself that it will all be worth it in the end (when we sell the house at top price :)) Luckily, I can go to work all day, my poor H works at home and is stuck in the house with these idiots all day. Maybe he needs the drinks more than me.

S2 realized that he had to fill out an application for a choir scholarship last night at 10pm - it’s due today! Typical. So far he has not gotten any of these outside scholarships, but we keep trying.
