someoldguy - Hakuna matata indeed!

megp - Happy to serve drinks to your DH. Also, D has only gotten 1 of the 4 outside scholarships applied to. One more to hear back from but it is doubtful in my opinion.

DD taking AP calc AB today as well. She was up a lot worrying etc. I am wondering if it is even worth her trying to place out of the class because she is considering med school…isnt it better to get the A in Calculus and leave it at that, than take a higher level math course and possibly not do as well?? anyway, I am not the one taking the test!!! Hakuna matata! one of my favorite phrases!!

The BC Cal takers are a pretty self-selecting group. It’s not an easy test, but most kids aren’t even going to attempt it. Hey, both my boys had to work their asses off to get Bs in that class but got 5s. I bet y’all’s kids will rock it, too. :)

2013 Presidential Scholars announced:

http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/2013/scholars.pdf

Thanks SOG. I am no longer worried about that test today~!

Congratulations GreekMana!

We are not on the Presidential scholars list… just posting in case my imaginary friends know someone who is!!! But thanks anyway Kennedy!

Zero studying for AP Calc here also! I’m practicing letting go…

D is not studying at all for her APs, zilch, zero. Her rationale…doesn’t matter what I get because they won’t help me next year…so who really cares?

Good morning!

AP Calc: DS was very relaxed and on the couch last night. About 8pm he asked if we had an AP Calc review book. Um, don’t you think it is a little late to ask that question? No matter what he will probably take Calc over since the second semester calc class at college (at least where he is going) is supposed to be a bear, so probably better to have an excellent foundation. Plus math major older sister says our HS teacher is inadequate (actually not the word she used but we are in pleasant company).

Checking in! Like the rest we are also knee deep in AP and IB exams!
I just want to take the time to do some bragging on my DD. My 5 year old got really sick last night with a nasty stomach virus. DD was studying for exams but dropped what she was doing to help with the baby while I took care of my sick little one. My husband works weird hours on certain days and wasn’t home yet. I’ll miss her terribly when she goes to College.

I saw another Columbia parent here! I think maybe two if I’m not mistaken. Greetings fellow Lions!

Is anyone else working on a video slideshow for their Seniors? I’ve been putting one together for the past two weeks. I used to be annoyed with DH’s constant picture taking, but now I’m so glad he was nuts with the camera. DD’s entire life is chronicled in astonishing detail. On the downside, it looks like I own just 3 pairs of pants and two shirts. lol

Here’s a question for all of you: I just started teaching DD how to drive. I think she’s doing pretty well. We started in a huge parking lot working on the basics. For those of you who taught your kids, what steps did you take? Meaning, when did you take them driving in town, interstate driving, downtown etc. She told me that she won’t need this skill in NYC, but I reminded her that she’ll be back for the summers (maybe).

It’s AP exam time and D is stressed. English Lit tomorrow and Stat on Friday - wish they could be further apart. At least I’m not stressed about them - if she gets the 4’s she needs for credit it would be nice, but it isn’t necessary. She already knows what college she will attend and these scores won’t influence that, plus she will already get credits for the 2 AP’s from last year. I was much more worried when she took the SAT and ACT last year, since those scores had a big influence on which colleges she would get accepted to.

My S’10/'14 was limited to 5 AP classes (15 credit hours) that his U would give credit for. But since he didn’t want to try to graduate a semester early, those credits haven’t been of too much use, at least not that many credits. He did take a lighter course load two semesters, so used 2 of the class credits to make up for that. S does have a friend whose U didn’t limit AP credits, and had enough credits that he decided to graduate in 3 years (which is now).

Oops, I read my calendar wrong by a week. Only one banquet next week, the athletic one and by then all of S AP tests will be done. Then we go to academic, music, etc etc.

Poor S AP schedule is crazy. He spread out most of them, but Monday has thrre if you could both parts of Physics. Today is BC calc which is not stressed about as he has close to a 100 average in the class without working. Some sort of recessive gene he must have about math.

Physics is also on Music Theory day - he will be exhausted after. I remember last year his doubles partner had to play a match after the Physics test and he was mentally out of it.

I wonder what they will do in class for the last week and a half before graduation practice starts??

Driving instruction: on the day D got permit we went to a mega church lot with a private drive around it and practiced the main rule - Stay in your lane! This was after initial practice of forward, reverse, turning in the parking lot. She did so well I told her to go ahead and drive home. This was on country roads, and through one small town. It was nerve wracking but she did great. After that we pretty much had her drive every where she was going. We did wait a bit for the highway and it was more rural highway than heavy beltway traffic. We added stick shift after a few months because that was the car we had available for her to drive. Practice, practice, practice.

Driving: In California they are supposed to have one “in-the-car” lesson with the instructor before they drive with you. D1 had never driven before and the lesson was traumatic for her so we took it slow and drove in a big parking lot, cemetary, etc… Eventually she drove to school and back every day. The boys were naturals (maybe because they both sailed for years) and were driving the streets right away.

Report from Ap Calc (AB): “it was easy”

tx5 - my dd’s report on Calc AB was the same

On driving - in our state you have to drive 50 hours with your parents before you can get your license - 10 of which needs to be at night. Just got done with DS15 - he got his license 2 weeks ago. Parking lot, side streets, main streets and then highways. The best time for the first highway drive is Sunday morning. Both of my kids hugged the right side of the road for about 2 weeks (thought for sure they would take out a mailbox or tree or two or three!) but then they got over that!!! I can’t imagine not having my dd drive until this time senior year - both of my kids got their license on their 16th birthday at 8AM!!! First available appointment! Of course - we live in the suburbs.

my kid re AP calc AB: she didnt feel good about the frq’s but sounds like the other part was not bad…??

I agree! We didn’t plan it that way. DD13 is 16 and a Senior. She and Dad in the car don’t mesh. He doesn’t have the patience or bravery to teach her. I was on bedrest the better part of last year. We also live where snow is prevalent a good part of the winter months.

Oh well TV - that makes sense. She is a YOUNG senior! I figured with your busy household that it would be a priority when it could be :)

My D took AP Calc AB/BC today, too. Unfortunately, her school doesn’t offer the BC class. She had been doing extra study sessions with the AB teacher to cover the BC material, but the teacher got sick about 6 weeks ago and ended up in the hospital for weeks…
Somehow D thought they had finished covering the BC material and she was good. Until last week… when she figured out that she wasn’t good after all. She said the AB was easy, but she doesn’t think BC went so well. Ah, like Tx5’s kid, she will be retaking freshman year anyway to make sure her foundation is solid. On to AP French!

TV - D was a slow start, but has turned out to be a better driver than S. Just keep the faith…

D said AP Calc went “fine”. Need to check the urban dictionary…
