AP Lit tomorrow. kiddo is freaking out. I keep telling her none of this is really going to be a major issue (because her school doesnt really “count” them too much…) I dont think you can graduate early or anything…just “take them to see how you do…but dont worry”…I guess she doesnt have to take them…but that’s 80 dollars per test down the drain!!!

Yeah, that’s $89 per AP and multiplied by 5 is $445…ouch! especially when S’s college is not giving credit…well maybe on some of them they will. My S has AP Calc BC, Lit, Japanese, Gov and Latin! He said the Calc BC was not bad, so one down 4 to go.

D has to take them since they serve as the final exam in class. Please let me know if that is that the case in your schools.

My S’s HS obligates students to take the AP tests but they do not count toward grades and they don’t have finals in those classes. I don’t see how they can count the APs when the scores don’t come out until July. Do they delay grades in those cases or do the teachers somehow get to see them?

Kennedy - D’s HS encourages the students in the AP classes to take the AP tests but there was only one test my daughter didn’t want to take - comp. sci. The teacher is also her calc BC (and last year’s AB) teacher and she is great at teaching calc but not so good at teaching comp. sci. My daughter wants to take comp. sci. in college so she’ll actually learn it (so the AP credit is useless) but the teacher makes her students take the AP test or she’ll give them a final just as difficult as the AP test and it will count in their final grade. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the school paid for the tests but parents have to pay so we wasted $89 and my D wasted three hours taking the test. So . . . D took the comp. sci. AP test yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by how much she knew. She said calc BC went well today. Next week she’ll get to take physics B (not a good teacher, not sure why she wanted to take the test), gov’t, and micro and macro econ.

I have a question: do your kids’ schools let the kids taking AP tests go home after the tests? Our school used to allow that but this year they have new attendance rules and only certain excuses are allowed for an excused absence (brain melt isn’t allowable). I was still able to excuse my D but I have to jump through a few hoops. I’m so ready to be done dealing with the high school administration!

Our place expects the kids to stay in school for the rest of the day following an AP exam, but the other classes at this point are basically in AP review mode. In honor of AP Lit day – and in recognition of a lot of strands of conversation on CC – let’s take a moment to recall a well-known Fitzgerald/Hemingway point/counterpoint.

In Fitzgerald’s 1925 short story “Rich Boy,” he wrote:

In the 1936 magazine version of “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” Hemingway recalled this and got his two cents in:

And on that note, here’s hoping the kids have a good day and, eventually, some time to see the Baz Luhrmann Gatsby movie. In the meantime, here’s another Luhrmann production number.

Our AP tests are subsidized, so the financial impact isn’t so bad. We paid $59 for AP Lit (which won’t count for college) and AP Music Theory was free (which will count if he gets a 4 or 5). But taking the AP Lit test exempts them from the final, so S2 is going ahead and taking it. He’s made 5’s on the practice tests, so I’m sure he’ll do OK - even if it’s just for personal pride. And he does have to stay the rest of the day to basically watch movies in class.

our school expects the kids to stay for classes, or come in early for the classes (if they take an “afternoon” AP. All AP classes have some kind of final exam in addition to the AP test. Some teachers are giving the “final” the day before the AP—which may help the study for the AP, but if you are taking an AP during that time slot…it’s a mess. Others are giving the “final” a week after the AP’s are done…My kid is so “done” with High school! The problem is, I dont see that she’s so excited for college yet…I think it’s because she still has so much to complete! — and this waitlist thing is for the birds! I just wish she’d decide the “deposited” school is the one that she wants! SOG, can we add that song to the list “You’re the one that I want”…???

Sure.

Back to APs for a moment, I think we’ve adopted the attitude here that, while they don’t really count for much this year, they’re good practice – practice for Devil Child in taking a collegiate style final and practice for Dad in writing checks that serve no apparent purpose.

D’s school does not administer the AP tests - students go to a nearby college campus to test so they are allowed to leave afterwards.

Also, I should have been clearer about AP serving as finals. All teachers that my D has this year require the AP test to pass the class. (except Chinese because I think she figures it’s just too hard to get the kids to pass the Speaking section) In addition, they make the kids take “mock” AP exams and use that as their final exam score. While it is a little annoying to have to the the exams twice - it is good practice.

AP classes at our school are free:) The exams are required (because the class was free) and we also have mock AP tests that usually count as the final for that class. Because my son is going to school in state, he took more DE classes this year as all the credits will transfer and only one AP. That test is next week. His two on campus (local CC) DE classes are done (he made Dean’s List) so after next week he really only has one other class (DE Zoology) at the high school left. Graduation here is May 31!

1 AP completed, 1 today & 1 more next week & he is DONE!

He has to go to a local college campus to take them. We pay for them. Once he is done he will do an internship instead of going to school. The AP’s are his finals.

My D graduates two weeks from today!

She knocked off APES the other day, is in APLit as we speak, and then has AP Music Theory on Monday - then she’s DONE with anything of consequence. Her AP Lit teacher also gave a final last week, which was probably good practice for today’s exam.

She’ll be modeling in the Senior Designer fashion show this weekend, so that may actually be a good distraction from AP boot camp for a couple days. Hopefully she’ll get her head in the game in time for Monday’s exam.

DS’ 13 only had 1 AP this year, the rest are IB tests. Today is HL Math paper 1. I asked last night why he is not reviewing? " Mom, it basically is AMC 12, I have been doing those problems for the past 5 years" ;)

DD’15 reports that AP Calc yesterday was brutal…hoping for a lenient curve…

Advice for teen drivers:

Look ahead to the middle of the lane in which you are driving and drive to that point. Do not try to center your car in your driving lane by judging how close you are to the gutter/ditch/shoulder or the center line. If you do the latter, you will probably side swipe oncoming traffic, or more likely, drive with your right tires in the debris filled gutter.

Use the 3-5 second rule, not the 2 second following rule until you know what you are doing.

Drive like you are transporting your grandma who has a broken hip to the hospital. That means no fast starts, stops, and turns, or grandma will scream out in pain. Minimize use of brake; try to slow down by anticipating when you need to stop (like approaching an intersection with a stale green/orange/red light) and slow down before you hit a tight turn or curve.

Don’t let the gap close between you and the car driving ahead of you.

Slow down if the car in front of the car in front of the car in front of you has its brake lights on. Don’t wait until the car in front of you is slamming on its brakes. Especially if you have been using the 0.5 second following rule.

When backing up or changing lanes, look carefully behind you or over your left shoulder for tornado funnels blocking your way (tip from my driving instructor, it was memorable cause I still check for the tornado).

If your mother is panicking, clutching the glove compartment, slamming her right foot on a non-existant brake pedal, and screaming “Slow down! Slow down!”, you are driving too fast.

AP Report: Almost 5 done, one more to go. Twins are wiped out when they come home. They have to report to school for morning for afternoon tests, and vice versa.

In the last three years, I’ve paid $1424 for the 16 AP tests. Ouch. School doesn’t help pay, but requires them if you want a higher weighting for weighted GPA calculations.

We also just found out that we didn’t get our last hope of any scholarship, including for National Merit Finalist. Unfortunately, the colleges that were the best match for each make it pretty difficult to get any merit based scholarship. Please, tuitionmobiles, don’t fail me now. And I will continue to cut my own hair, as well as DH, DD, and DS. And continue to save in every other stupidly tiny and possible way. Summer vacation will be in the relatives’ homes again this year! Woohoo!

good driving tips.

Like sophieand lolla, AP tests are free and required. Too bad none of them will count for credit next year (maybe some placement). AP Lit today, then Stat, French, Micro/Macro, Physics and Euro over the next several days (basically one per day). But I do not think he’s stressing too much. His bag when he left this morning for school contained pens, pencils, sunglasses, flip-flops and other beach gear. :D

I tried cutting my own hair, but it turned out sort of like this.

Good morning!

SOG: You are cracking me up today!! We pay full price for APs so I am writing checks for no purpose as well.

AP tests: AP Lit is #3/6 and the third in three days. He is coming home after the test and then going back for tennis. I don’t know if they are technically supposed to do this, but that is what he is doing. He has three next week (Monday, Tuesday & Thursday).

DDHM: I love your driving tips!!

My daughter lucked out and all 4 of her AP’s were this week - so she is home free. They also have practice AP tests - which really helps them understand how much they need to study (or not study in my dd’s case!). We pay $89/test also - not mandatory to take. She is taking AP Gov but didn’t take the test - would not be used at her university - she already took APUSH and they would only take one or the other.
