Parents of the HS Class of 2013

I literally cannot keep 'em all straight!!! I will just have to wish everyone luck with hitting those submit buttons, getting the scholarship $ they would love, getting NMF (waiting on that one here, too), and then finally… getting “picked”!! :D

Everyone who is still submitting… Common App is CRAWLING tonight! I can only imagine what it will be like tomorrow and the next day!

DS13a is FINISHED! DS13b has to deal with Waldo tomorrow. I think it will be a long day!

DS13a told me that his favorite word is “callipygian” but didn’t think it was appropriate for the question on college apps that asks for his favorite word. I thought it was kind of cute, what do you think? Would you have let your son list this word? I would have let him do it, but he decided against it.

I must admit, I had to google the word “callipygian” to find out what it meant. Don’t know if he should use it or not, but it sure has me cracking up!!

Greek-

My D’10 said "good call’ on your son’s part.

Goodluck to all today with apps - I hope the Common App site cooperates!

I find it interesting that there seems to be a common thread of kids dropping a school from their list because they don’t want to do the app or essays etc. My dd has chosen to drop one of her schools (that she has already been accepted to) becaue the application for honors and their large scholarship is sooooo long! I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing because they have to eliminate schools some how when they are one of those kids that say “I can see myself happy at any of these 6 schools” like my dd is! She is still undecided between two majors and she said that if she wanted to study the one major she prefers a different school anyway - seemed like an ok reason to me.

In the end - it really is the biggest decision in their young lives and they have to work through it (as long as the $$ makes sense for us parents :))

Greek – You say “callipygian,” I think Monica Lewinsky. Have to agree with your son – probably best to pass. :)

Carimama – you started a business to help your D get to Europe? I’m already way impressed. But now it’s doing well enough that you may be able to quit your day job? You GO girl!

pkd and others still submitting – we’re with ya. Still more to go here as well.

Congrats to the O S U honors kids. I think it would be amazing to have the resources of a huge school like that available to you. Our kids are sold on LACs, and D1 is certainly a poster child for the benefits of that type of education, but I still think an honors college within a big U might be quite the sweet spot.

D1’s friend was over last night. He is a recent graduate of U. Rochester who is loving his new job at Microsoft. He was watching D2 suffer through her supplements & eventually announced “I think the best strategy is to only apply to one school.” We nearly kicked him out into the snow!

anouilh - that is too funny about your D1’s friend! I can totally see a 22 year old guy saying that!!!

I was glad to hear your comment about big state school honors college. Through this process that is the model that my dd has landed on - she (and dh and I) believe it is the right place for her but so many people are anti big state school for bright kids - My family has always been university (not LAC) people so they get it but others don’t.

Not to rub it in or anything but DS said to me yesterday…I’m bored, everyone is home filling out applications :D…

89Wahoo- We can wait, all huddled up together, for J M U! I’m not really sure where it stands on my D’s list. She was ALL ABOUT J M U for her junior year, it was her number one etc and I really liked it too. Then we went back for a visit her Sr Year and it plummeted several slots on her list. Not sure why and I was a bit annoyed by it b/c I think it is a really, really good school for her. Who knows. We are hoping to hear honors college news too and if she is lucky, maybe even a scholarship as well. Hoping! January is a HUGE month for you guys!

Apollo- Aw! That was sweet to say. We were scrounging for leftovers toward the end of the visit. I am going to the grocery store today- I haven’t been since the 23rd of December! Slim pickings around here now!

Where do I secretly hope D will go? That’s a good question. I like all the schools on her list. I would love her to be nearer so I guess I’ll say St M A R Y’ S C O L L E G E of M D would probably be my first choice for her. Then probably O W U or C A S E for her second. But honestly, I think she will do fine at any of her college options. :-)

DrMom- SIX WEEKS? Like, a month and a half? God bless your soul, you are my hero. I’d be pulling a Javert! (anyone else see that movie yet? What’d you think?)

Mommydearest! Congrats on the honors acceptance at t O S U! Great news!

Love the Hallelujah chorus being played. That is so funny! Now it will be stuck in my head.

D got supplement to D E N I S O N in a couple of days ago, is finishing S T. O L A F supp today and submitting her scholarship essay to W O O S T E R today or tomorrow as well. Then she is all done. :-)

Greekmana- Haahahahahaha! I didn’t know what that meant but it made me laugh once I looked it up! :-)

So I’m curious- how many people on here are finalized? As in, kid is accepted where kid wants to go and the decision is made and finished?

And of those who are in that (envious!) position, are you at liberty to S P E L L it out?

We are heading in to a very big year here, folks. I was looking at D yesterday and telling her that at this point we don’t know $hit and by the end of 2013 she will have been living somewhere else for over four months. Just makes you realize what dramatic changes are headed our way in only a few short months.

My H is starting to be hit by all kinds of emotional moments lately. It is happening to me too but more rarely and I have been working through this process for several years now (it’s my first and I was hyperfocusing for sure!) It kind of reminds me of the pregnancy process- I spent ten LONG months becoming acquainted and attached to the kidlets and for him, it wasn’t until and ultrasound, feeling the movement and ultimately the birth that it all hit him.

We are one for two finalized Vandy–but DD had a Nov 1st deadline to work with for recruiting so that compacted the schedule for us quite a bit. DS would be sitting home this weekend filling out apps too if we didn’t make him work along the same schedule as DD. Now we are just waiting for the final $$$ for him and one more RD in April to decide. DD has her deposit in and is ready to go.

I’m 90% sure ds is done. His HMFR is the only thing that would change that.

We hear from DS’s #1 in 7 days! If he gets in…we are done!!!

I have a question that needs an urgent answer. If a school’s deadline is January 1st for everything, and the high school doesn’t send anything electronically and you have no idea whether they have done their part or not, should you still apply? I don’t want to waste our money if they will just look and see that the school report isn’t there and throw it in the garbage. Thoughts?

Walker, most schools won’t penalize the kid for the school missing the deadline. I hope that’s true because ds’s school apparently still hasn’t sent stuff for the ones he applied to last week.

Good morning!

Happy New Years Eve!

Deadlines: I know for my DS some of his school stuff wasn’t in right on time (one of the teacher’s recs was a couple days late) for his SCEA school, but he still got an answer (deferral). So I kind of think those deadlines are for the kid’s part.

Are we finalized? No, definitely not finalized here. We won’t know most of his acceptances until late March, and then he will need to decide based on those results. No clear favorites at this point.

Do I have a favorite? I think deep down, most days I would like him to go to his older brother’s school (if he is accepted), because I like the school and I know how everything works (dorms, move-in, parent weekend, etc…).

Happy New Year everyone and best wishes to all the kids still filling out apps. S2 is done . 99% sure he is going to Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ unless Juilliard comes through with a huge scholarship money. Won’t know know for sure until Apr 1.

We got back from a great family vacation in New Orleans on Fri and DH and I have been flattened by the worst colds ever since. We’re trying stay away from S2 as he has a huge competition in Miami starting on Sat. Not a good time to get sick.

We did haul ourselves out of our sickbeds to go see Les Miz yesterday. We all enjoyed it. The acting was great even if some of the singing was subpar. I had to laugh at S2. He spent 4 months playing Gavroche when he was a kid and yesterday he says “So that’s what Les Miz was about? We were supposed to be in Paris?” Not a great attention span at age 8.

Sent from my GT-P3113 using CC

Wow, MegP! He played Gavroche? I can’t imagine seeing my little guy play that- that scene just KILLS me. I had my hands firmly over my eyes when his death scene was coming. The little boy in the film did a very nice job though!

I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie. The filming was too “in your face” for me (I joked that it was like being near a “close talker” with your back against a wall!") and the quality of the singing too uneven. It wasn’t awful or anything but I much prefer the stage musical.

I am headed to see Book of Mormon in NYC at the end of January with Dh. Beside myself with excitement!

Walker- I would go ahead and submit the app. :-)

DD will be playing Fantine in an upcoming theater production. She & her castmates are very
excited about the movie!

DD is done, too! She had thought that she might submit 2 more apps, but really her EA acceptance was her #1, so she thought she shouldn’t confuse the issue.

Good luck to everyone still getting those apps in!

megpmom, sorry about the cold!

About the uneven singing in Les Miz - we saw Mamma Mia again the other night and I always laugh at Pierce Brosnan’s efforts!
