Happy New Year to all, and congrats and good luck! And thank you to this board for teaching me HMFR and callipygian!

Haystack - whew! Ha ha - just standing up for my school!! I went to our state flagship right out of hs…where literally every other hs classmate of mine went, and I just SO disliked it. Okay - hated it. Visited K-State Labor Day weekend sophomore year and immediately fell head over heels in love with it. Unfortunately H and I thought K-State would be great for our kids, and planned for that financially. Apparently they do not think so
As an alum our kids can go there for 150% of in-state tuition, which is an amazing bargain, and about the same as our state flagship. Due to our DD13’s major she is looking at privates, and that is why we are looking for outside scholarships, and awaiting scholarship information from her last school, in hopes that we can get a little more scholarship money from her #1.

Hope I didn’t sound too proud of our Land Grant U… :)

Is our DD done? Not yet…she has the acceptances, but we need to see all merit aid/FA (if any - doubt it) letters and try to encourage her #1 to show just a little more love to our DD. Not a lot - just a little.

Happy New Year to everyone!
Here’s hoping the fiscal cliff can be avoided!
Here’s to all our kids being accepted to the schools that will be perfect for them!
Here’s hoping we parents can afford the school our kids prefer!
Here’s to a healthy new year for all parents and kids!
Blessings to everyone, and be careful on the roads tonite…take care, all!

Just got back from the Music City bowl after getting home from Chicago at 3:00 a.m. Not sure how long I will make it tonight! The bowl game was great! Awesome to see a big crowd cheering Vandy on!

Vandygrad…we went to Chicago to see The Book of Mormon! That was what my daughter wanted to do for her senior trip instead of going to the beach. (she’s almost clear, she’s so white). IT WAS AWESOME!!! The funniest musical Ive ever seen. Warning: vERy inappropriate… Don’t even think about taking a kid under 18 to see it unless you want to be blushing (or explaining) the whole time. I was thankful I was sitting next to an adorable gay man and my daughters best friend, and NOT my daughter (oh, and she’s ED V A N D Y : )

also…if anyone is going to Chicago and to the art institute, please be aware that the Steve McQueen exhibit is NOT something from the 60-70’s television and movie star. It’s pretty graphic film and photography, and there was no warning or people monitoring who went in. That made me blush MUCH more than the musical!

Here’s hoping that the New year is full of great news! Can’t wait to see what the kids do in the next 12 months!

Happy New Year!

Good luck to everyone finishing apps.

D is in ED at her #1, so that part is done!
She still needs to do scholarship applications though - the FA package had more loans than I’d like and she needs some scholarship funds to replace that. (At least the school doesn’t reduce aid by outside scholarships the way that some others do.)

Hey 'rents!

SOOOO. In the beginning of sophomore year I told myself that I would start looking at colleges early, that way I would avoid waiting until the absolute last minute to submit my apps.

That didn’t happen.

So, there I was, about 1:30 pm, in my room, on Collegeboard, when it hit me: What if I don’t get enough financial aid from the schools I’ve already been accepted to + UConn.

I did what I didn’t want to do. In five hours, I came up with a list of schools, some I had already planned on applying to before making my decision to not apply to anymore, and some I didn’t think about applying to until now.

Today, in about roughly an hour, I applied to six colleges. Six. In addition to the seven I had already applied to, I just added the following schools to my list of ‘sent’ applications: St. John’s University (Queens, NY), Manhattan College, Skidmore College, American University, Northeastern University, and Hofstra University.

I AM DONE. That’s it. I’m not applying to anymore. That was it. My impulsiveness is over. I’m done. That is all.

Have a nice new year!

walker - love the poem!

Kat2012 - sorry about the job. Good luck.

YDS - congrats! with a whole 36 hours to spare :D

Good luck to all still submitting apps. We have only one left due Jan. 15, but S13 still hasn’t decided if he’s applying there . At least he’s begun working on the four scholarship apps due 12/31.

Happy late B-Day Greekmana!

Congrats our2girls - nice to remember that it all works out :)

mamabear - excellent on the note from UChi :D

YDS - definitely, I agree. Our kids don’t seem to realize how much difference a “paper” item makes.

mommaof5 congrats on the scholarship - they are all great!

drmom123 - check the Ivy League forum, there are a number of threads with interview advice. Also, best thing I did was google the interviewer and check out her LinkedIn page. It gave S13 more of a feeling that she was human beforehand. Also helped him recognize her.

Walker - WOW. On the poem.

carimama - I hear you on the other planet. I have one friend IRL who’s “in the loop.” If it makes you feel any better, my 15-year-old D went to Costa Rica without us last summer (with the above-mentioned friend, lol).

Walker - congrats on MiamiU (that’s OH, right?)!

LOL on being bored YDS. I know I’m going to feel that way in two weeks when we’re done. I’ll be looking for things to be anxious about!

DDHM - right there with you on Christmas cards!

mommaof5 - as S13 was submitting his last scholarship of the day (he didn’t need to wait for the deadline on ALL of them, did he?) I said “just think what life would be like if you didn’t have me finding all this good information for you” and boy, did his eyes light up… lol.

congrats on being done, blueshoe!

MommyDearest - that is definitely a great line! And congrats on honors.

anouilh - lol on “helpful” friends!

Great resolution DDHM!

our2girls - hear, hear!

So, we spent almost 4 hours in a cell phone store today (after I had done exhaustive research, picked phones, picked the plan, called and got pre-set for everything, got the activation fees waived, visited the store, everything is ready). The carrier screwed up the migration to the new plan. Which invalidated the new phones. Took forever to get the old phones working (another 4 hours after we left the store, with old phones in hand). Then, when the old phones started working again, S13 lost all his contacts. And the kids still don’t have their Christmas present phones. May 2013 start better…

And, S13 didn’t finish two scholarship apps because he spent the essay time sitting on the floor in the phone store. We couldn’t leave without phones, and neither old nor new was working. Grrr. I need to move into Walker’s basement.

Okay, my venting is done. I need to go get ready… this is my big night ;)!

Safe night, everyone.

Swizzle: WOW!!! Let’s hope you get what you want and need to attend the school of your choice!

Happy New Year everyone!

Good grief. Just found a way to depress myself. Thought, wow. D has all her apps in. Then thought, wow. Hopefully this time next year, S14 will too.
Off to cry in a corner. Time goes way too fast.

Oh. And I have a new square. Thank somebody for listening to my rants. :)

In 2013 may we all be more callipygian! I guess that means diets and going to the gym…

The GreekMana family is officially done applying to colleges! And we have 29 hours to spare. I am amazed. Now I join the club of what to do now? I am so thankful that I can quit driving my sons crazy and hopefully just enjoy them before they leave the nest.

I asked for a couple of squares for Christmas but that big fat guy ignored me as usual. :)

DDHM - LOVE the new year’s goal!!!
(had to look it up also!) And I find it rotten (I first used “deplorable” but thought it sounded too - too something. It’s not a word I use anyway, so I’m not sure why it popped into my head) that your daughter has to do all that extra work for a local college’s requirement! Serves her right, though, for having so many friends who trust her LOR skills! ;)

Being up in the air - by this time next year, all our kids will be places that most of us don’t know about yet… Profound and sorry I can’t remember exactly who said it! My son said something similar to that to me last Christmas, but it was something like ‘a year from now we’ll know where I’m going to college’. He had not planned on applying ED way back then, so how would he know that?? Eh…who knows… Karma? So plans - we have the school, just not the $ yet. Currently school expects full pay and currently hubby is unemployed. I know… blah, blah…blah… I feel like my life recently has just been one big “oh, woe is me” sob story… Well, DS13 DID get into D U K E, so I guess that’s nothing to cry about! (although I DID cry intensely when I found out he got in!) But maybe one of the wonderful 13er musicians on this thread can play a tiny little violin for me?

Unrelated: WHY can’t I find the icons??? I almost always use “quick reply” (even when my replies are nothing but quick!) but even if I click the “real” post reply, I don’t see a list of icons anywhere… I have my own little list of 3 or 4 stupid little icons which just don’t say it all! And why can’t my 50 PM’s be 50 send AND 50 received, instead of 50 total?? Rant over…

Swizzle - 6 colleges in one hour!!! That’s how to bang 'em out! And it’s not that you weren’t prepared or didn’t start soon enough. You were more on top of the whole thing than 99.9% of kids out there (even CCers!). You just panicked a little at the end! ;)

89wahoo - I know a secret place you can go if you are looking to increase your green ;)

Walker - definitely send it in. Our teacher recs were late and it worked out OK. Still irritating because the school asked us to ask them 3 whole weeks in advance so they could get it all in on time, and then they don’t bother to get it in on time??

moonpie - your life seems like so much fun… :)

Note to self - NEVER see Book of Mormon with the boyz! They all laugh at me already at how uncomfortable I get when a movie has inappropriate parts and I’m in the room with them. We saw “I Love You, Man” recently and I had to leave the room a few times! Planning on renting Ted this January, and I’m sure I’ll be red the entire time!

Megpmom - You’re son is so talented!!! Autographs at 8! Milking the dying scene! “We were supposed to be in Paris?” Love it!!!

confetti - you are a master of remembering a lot of posts! So sorry about your phone problems not a good day :(

89wahoo - I don’t think it was you this time…I’m on my phone and can’t see the boxes… (though I have shown you some green box love), but when I gave some green box love to one of you awhile ago it went from one to two squares before my very eyes!

Happy New Year everyone!! Hope all of you who have kids that are applying with Jan. 1 deadlines are finished and have moved on to more festive activities!

Yesterday, I heard Stevie Nicks Landslide while watching an old movie. I love that song, but the lyrics really made me tear up thinking about how different things will be for me when D is gone next year.

“Can I handle the seasons of my life? Well, I’ve been afraid of changing 'cause I’ve built my life around you. But time makes you bolder. Even children get older and I’m getting older too.” Sniff, sniff…

Re: smilies: at the bottom of the page it says “smiles are on” and the word “smilies” is a link. Right-click it and open in a new tab or you lose everything you typed.

Greekfamily - Hoorayyy!!! Now you’ve still got some time left to enjoy those boys!!

Carimama - what did you end up doing about the post office? Really curious!

confetti - the phone problems… oh dear… Just don’t worry about the scholarships that didn’t get done and think to yourself how if he could’ve gotten them, how much that makes these Christmas present phones really cost… definitely don’t do that… cuz that’s what I would do and I would drive myself insane. You seem much more level-headed!
(boring, plain old smilie :()

At the bottom of which page? This one? I don’t see anything about smilies being on or see the word smilies anywhere… Do I need to have hit “post reply” first, as opposed to posting in ‘quick reply’? And I used to know how to cut and paste sections of other posts I am replying to… not so much anymore… Is “reply” at the bottom right of each post different from the “CC Post Reply” over on the bottom left, under everyone’s yellow CC and scale? Why do I feel so illiterate?

My3gr8 - if you click the post reply button under the scales and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, you’ll see the little box that says what you have enabled/ disabled.

Blueshoe, I love Fleetwood Mac. That song suits my mood perfectly tonight.
My3, I am hoping for a much, much better year for you in 2013.
I’m still mystified about green squares… I do tap on your ‘puffs’ though.
Confetti, your phone story. Oh, my gosh how annoying. I’m so sorry.

2013 is so gonna be my beyotch.
